-' To all whomv it may concern:
Be it known that DANIEL j MILLIKEN, of
Boston, State of hiassachusetts, and 0; M. P LLs'BURY, late of Olaremont, in the county of Sullivan and State of New Hampshire, did ilw'ent certain new and useful Improvements in Joints for Stove-Pipes; and we do hereby dcclarethat the following is a full, clear, and
exactdescript-ion thereof, that will on able others skilled in the art to'wliich it appcrt'ains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
'. Figure 1 of the drawings 13 an external View of the sections of a stove-pipe connected together hythis invention; and. Fig. lis a transverse section of the same, taken through the line 1 a, Fig. 1. r
This invention has relation to improved means for securing together the sections of stove-pipes, whereby the latter may be readily put up and taken down, and. the sections or lengths firmly connected. together, so as to obtain very close or ti ghtj oints, and thus prevent .the escape of either fire or smoke.
The nature-of the intention consists in an .-adju stable hand fitting over the joint of two adjoining sections of pipe, and hayin g a drawfastening, whcrehy its ends are'drawn together and fastened.
It also consists in coinbinin g, with the jointed sections of a pipe, hating-each a circumfercntial bead near its end, a band provided with pipe, constructed'as usual, with thccxcept-ion that the lapped'or loel; joints (1 do notcxtend the whole length'oi' the sections, a space, 1:, being left at each. end, where the edges of the sheet metal. simply abut against each.
ther. as shown in Fig. l,
The sections 'Aare swagcd or grooved eir cinnfercntially, so as to fOllii a'heathc, around then one near each end, as shown in Fig. 1. 13 represents a. collar or hanthwhich mayheeonstruet'edof sheet metal of the same kind as that of which the sections A are made. This hand or collar is also eircumferentiall swaged or grooved, to form two beatlsj, d d, which project from the exterior surface'of the. band or collar, and: form groovesat the inner side't-hercof. The collar or band-does not have its end permanently attached, h'utis pro i'ided near each end with a-projccting car or lug, 0, through which a scrcw',.f,- passes, and by turning which the collar or-band maybe drawn snugly around the ends of the adjoiniug section's A-A,;the collaror band fitting over the portions of theeuds I) ofthe sections, so that the lap or look joint a will not inter-- fere with it, and the heads 0 of. the sections fitting in the grooves iii the inner side of the collarfornied by the heads (7.. .By-turning.thc. screw f the ends of: the band are drawn toward each otherand tightened around the pipe, and when this tightening is completed no further. operation is required to secure the hand, this being also accomplished by the screw or draw I fastenin By this siinpleineans thescctions A A are made to form with cacl other a Yer a close and rigid joint, which will effectually prevent the'escape of eithcn smoke or fire, and
' V which cannot become casually disconnected. I
\Ve claim as new, and desire to secure l'iy Letters Patent, the following:
1. The conibination,.with adjoining-seenons of a stove-pipe, of a band clainped around the.
' joint of said sections, and hating the end lugs,
c c, and adjusting-screwj, adapted to-dr'aw said lugs toward each other, substantially as specified. j
2. The combination, with the adjoining sections of a stove-pipe, of a clainphand and dra wfastening, which tightens the hand around the sections, and secures it at one andlhe same operation, substantially as specilicd.
3. The adjustable band 1%, prmidcd with stantially as described. v with the sections A of bead,'c, near its end,'of -a;ban 18, having corresponding gl oove I), luhptejd t .recive said bemls audv plamped responding-beads a,
near the ends of vthe sections A of a pipe,
as herein'l slhow' n anrl sub- 4. The combination, a. pipeaha-ving each a around the joint of the said s'ec t ;ions', si1bstantially as set-forth; I
