Description

JOINT FOR STOVE PIPE.
Patented May 7, 1867.

DANIEL L. MILLIKEN, OF BRATTLEBORO, VERMONT, ANDv 0. M. PILLSBURY,
' OF GLAREMONT, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
Letters Patent No. 64,552. dated May 7, 186.7;
JOINT FOR STOVE PIPE.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN! Be it known that i've, O. M. Prnnsnnnr, of Claremont, Sullivan county, New Hampshire, and 1). L. MILLI- KEN, of Brattleboro, Windham county, Vermont, have invented a new and improved Joint for Steve Pipes; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and improved manner of securing together the sections or lengths of stove pipes, as hereinafter fully shown and described,- whereby a stove pipe. may be readily put up and taken down, and the sections or lengths firmly connected together, very close or tight joints being obtained, which will efi'ectuollyprevent the escape through them of either smoke or fire. In the accompanying sheet of drawings Figure 1 is an external view of the le'ngths or sections of a stove pipe connected together by our invention.
Figure 2, a cross-section of the some taken in the line z x, fig. 1.
- Similar letters of reference-indicate corresponding parts.
A A. represent two lengths or sections of a. stove pipe constructed as usual, with the exception that the lapped or lock-joints a, do not extend the whole length of the sections, a space, 6, being left at each end of each s ction where the edges of the sheet metal simply abut against each other, (see fig. 1.) The sections A are swaged. or grooved circumfcrentially,'so as to 'form a bend, 0, around them, one new each end, as shown in fig. 1. B represents acollar or band, which may be constructed of sheet metal of the same kind as that of which the sections A are constructed. Th-is collar or band isalso swngcd or groorcd eireumferentially, to form two bcadafd d, which project from the exterior surface of the collar or band, and form grooves at the inner side thereof. This collar or hand does not have its ends permanently attnched, but is provided .ne'ar'each end with "a pro ecting ear or, lug, 2, through vvhich a screw, f, passes, and by turning which the collar or band may be. drawn snugly around the ends of the adjoining sections A A, the collar or bend fitting over the portions of the end. s of the sections, so that the lap or lock-joint a will not interfere with it, and the heads a of the sections fitti in the grooves in the inner side of the collar formed by the beads d. By-this simple means the sections A A .re connected by every close or firm joint, which will effectually prevent the escape of either smoke or fire, .Jnd which cannot-become casually disconnected.
We claim as new, end desire to secure by Letters Paton t l A the adjustable band B, provided with circumfcrentially-sivaged gro'odcs b, fitting over the corresponding heads 0, near the ends of the sections A ofthe stove pipe, as hercinfshow'n and described, for the purpose sp i'lied.
