To all whom-it may concern: y ister from being moved forward independent I Be it knownthat I, WILLIAM'H. HORNUM, of its actuating mechanism, so that in movof the city, county, and- State of New York, in g thesaid single-trip register back it will be. have invented a new and nseful'I-mprovemcntarrested at' zero, and thereby frauds by the inEare-Registermwhich improvement is fully conductor are prevented. described in the-following specification, refer- In the drawing, the letter A designates a ence being had tn the accompanying drawing, cylindrical case, which contains two or more in whicha J I sets of registering-wheels, B B B and a gong Figure 1 represents a face view, some pororhell, I, said gong being fastened to a bridge tions being broken away to expose the workor partition, 1, which is securedin the cylining parts. Fig. 2 isa longitudinal section. drical case A, and which forms the bearing Fig. 3 is a transverse section in the plane at w, for the inner end of the shaft 13, on which Fig. 2. Fig. 4is a similar sectionin the plane are mounted the registering wheels or drums y. ,Fig. Fig. 5 isa transverse sectlonof a B B B". The outer end of said shaft is semodification of the same. cured in a head or cover, A", that fits the Similar letters indicatecorresponding parts. openend of the cylindrical case A.. By this This invention consists in the combination 'arrangementl am enabledtorcmove the entire of a switch with two or more registeringleregisteringmechanism from the case A, sim' vers, each of which acts on a distinct set of ply withdrawing the head or cover A", and a registering-wheels, and with a main lever or registering mechanism of the same or of a prime mover, so that by moving the switch diflerent nature can be substituted therefor; one and the same prime mover serves to actu- At the end-of each round trip of a street-car, ate different sets of registering-wheels. -With for instance, the conductor hands his register the switch, the prime mover, the registerin gto the proper clerk, who removes the register levers,; and the registering-wheels are coming mechanism and substitutes another for it, bined a hammer and a bell, so that whenever so that the conductoris not detained while the the prime-mover is actuated, and a fare is clerk at his leisure enters the amount of the registered on either of the registering-wheels, fares indicated by the registering mechanism the Millie sounded. \Vith the switch, the retained by him,' and then sets the several prime mover, and the single-trip-registering registering-wheels to the zeropoint. 0n the devices is combined a general registering head A is secured an inner cylinder, A, mechanism, which continues to add up'all the which fits the case A and incloses the regisfares registeredby'the single-'trip-registering tering wheels. I devices during a long period of time, and \Vith the case A is combined another case, which remains uudisturbed,.whilethc smgle- C, that is divided by a partition, a, in two trip-registering devices are returned to zero compartments, 1) c. The front plate D is conafter each trip. The si1iglc-trip-registering nected tov the body of the case by ahingewheels, togetherwiththcir actuating-anchors joint, (I, and a spring, '0, has a tendencyto and ratchetwheels, are secured to a shaft force said front plate out to the position shown which is fast to a head that fits the case inin Figs. 3and 4.- In this front plate is a slot closing said registering-wheels, so that byre f, which forms'thefguide' for a siwitc'h,"E,' am moving said head theregistering-wheels with beneath said front plate are two-or more letheir actuatingnnchors and ratchetvheels, vers, g g g, each of which serves to actuate are withdrawn, and another set of registerone of the sets of registcring-drnmsB B B. ing-wheels can be readily substituted. \Vith Each set of registcring-drums consists of a the general registering device and the singlcunit-driun and a ten-drum, the unit-drum be trip register .is combined a zero-guard and a ing provided with a springpawl, h, Fig. 4,
mechanismwhich prevents the single-trip regwhich, whenever said unit-drum has comcase A, said step and lug pleted nine-tenths of a revolution, engages with one often pinsfi, projecting from the side of the ten-drum", andas the unit-drum completes the last tenth of its revolution the tendrum is moved with it.
The mechanism for propelling the registering-drums, as shown in Fig. 3, consists of an.
anchor, j, which swings on a pivot, It, and
I carries a spring-pawl, l, that engageswith a ratchet-wheel, m, secured to the unit-drum,
I said ratchet-wheel being provided wit-h ten teeth, so that each time the appropriate lever, g, 1 or 9 is actuated, the corresponding unitdrum is propelled one-tenth of .a 'revolution.-
fastened on'the shaft 13-, so-that when this. shaft, together with the cover- A", is withdrawn, the entire registering mechanism follows, as heretofore stated.
On the face of each of the rcgistcririg-drums are marked the figures from 0 to 9, and consequently each set of registcriirg-drums is capa ble of registering ninety-nine fares.
In the meet nism shown in Fig. 3 the levers g g aredetached from the anchor j I but, if desired, the levers g g may be made in one piece with their anchors j, as shown in Fig. 5'. 'By referring to Fig. 3, it will be seen that the registering-drum, when propelled by the anchor j I, turns in the direction of thcan ro-w marked on the ratchet-wheel m in said figure, and no provision is made to 1) I8"8I1t the conductor from turning the drum forward by hand. If the conductor desires to cheat his employers, he can turn the registering-- drums forward until boththe' unit-drum and the ten-drum are at the zero pointmnd then he can turn-the drums farther to any desired point. For instance, if he has received on a certain trip fifty fares, he can set his drums to show thirty, or any otherjgnumber smallerthan fifty, and pocket the difference This difliculty is avoided by the mechanism shown in Fig. '5. Iii this case the forward motion of the registering-drumstakes place in the direction of the arrow shown in that figure, and saiddrums cannot be moved forward "by hand eingprevented by the ratchet-wheel m and the pawl or pallet of the anchor j; but each set of registering-drums can be turned backwarduntil caught bya stop, 0, secured toone of The ummsmna by a lug, '10, fastened to the being in such a po-- sit-ion that they arrest .the drum at the zeropoint. tering-drums are set to zero by the superintendent, .andthen the'fare-register is handed to the conductor. He'cannot at that time move the registering-drums by hand in either,
direction, and as soon as he begins-to register fares'by depressing the front plate.D,he also actuates 'a generalregistering mechanism, which present-lydescribed, and if the .mgi'stering druxns should be set back during the trip .this'genei al registerwill. expose the v trip and turning again at the end of the for fares ofother amounts; On the front plate Dis secured acompound I yices B B B At the beginning of'the trip the regis tion on his person, and fnioves the switch to register from the superintendent, could turnthe-unitdrum backward, so as to indicate, for instance, eight fares instead of zero, and by neglecting'to register eight fares dining the the registering-drums back trip, so as to make them correspond to -the general register, he could defraud his employers. v
The switch E can he moved over either of thelevers g'.g "'g, and if the front plate D',
ivhichforms the prime mover, is then do? pressed, the switch acts on the lever beneath it, and the corresponding registering mechanism, B,- B or B is propelled one step. One of these registering mechanisms is intended for three-cent fares, one-for five-cent fares, and one for s1x-cent fares;
more registering mechanisms may be added pawl, q r, and if said front plate is depressed the armq of said pawl acts on the tail end of the hammer B, so as to cause the same to strike the hell I. The arm r of said compound pawl acts on a pin, .9, which projects from a lever, t, situated in thelower compartment 0 of the case 0. This lever carries a spring-- pawl, u, that engages with-teeth cut in the periphery of a ring, J, that embraces adisk, K. The ring 'J and the disk Kiorm the gen-- eral registeringmechanism. Said ringis pro "ided on its face with figures, frem 1 to 100, and the disk K bears on its face one hundred radial marks and figures, beginning with 1 and running of the ringand disk canbc seen 'through an, aperture, 2;, in the backplate of the. case (1;
and sinc'e'this general registering device will be moved invariably one step for] each motion of the-prime mover D, the number indicated byit must tally with the sum of the numbers indicated by the *single-trip-registering de- At the end of each trip the single-tripregistering devices are set back to' gero, while the general taken during a long pefastens my, fare-register in a convenientposi:
on receiving a fare he and then he depresses the front plate. This opera-tron he can easily perform with one hand,
andthe number and amount of fares received ca-n be'read ofi'at' the-end'of each trip.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by. Letters Patent, is
- 1. The combination of a switch, E,with fa and, if desired,still I from 5 to 5, the ring being coIr-' nected to the disk in such a manner that for registering v mechanism remainsundisturbed, and continuesto add up all the fares .riod oftimc. w I a The conductor of a railroad train or car the appropriate lever,

of the set of indicator-wheels B, adjustable for each day or trip, the inaccessible general register J K, and the prime mover, for operating the two sets of registers simultaneously but indeas herein shown and described. 7
5. The combination, in apassenger-register, of a general registering device and a singletrip-registering device, with a shaft secured in a head which fits the end of thecfise inclosing the single-trip-registeringdevice, so that by removing said head the single-trip-registering device can be withdrawn and anothersubregister, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination, in a passenger register or indicator, of a general, vregister, a singletrip register, adapted to be set back to zero at will, actuating mechanism common to all, and a pawl. and ratchet, to prevent the forward movement of the single-trip register independently of the actuating mechanism,.substantially as and for the purpose described.
7 The combination, with the single-trip register, and with a mechanism which prevents its 'ibrward. movement independently of the actu ating mechanism, of azero-guard, substantially as and for. the purpose set forth.
8. The combination,in a passenger-register, of a general register, a single-trip register, adapted to be set back tozero at will, actuating mechanism common to both, a mechanism to prevent the forward movement of the V single-trip register independently of the actuating mechanism, and a zero-guard, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing" I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 26th day of November, 1877.
