Be in known than I, vieron Gaming, of
Richland township, v(St.y Petersburg P. 0.,) in the county of Clarion and lState of Penn- Sylvania', have invented a new and useful Improvement in Casing-Spears; and I do the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure v1 is an elevation of a casing-spear embodying my invention, and also a sectional view of casing. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of 4 same, and Fig. 3 shows devices for supporting the weight of the casing during the operation of my devices.
occur.' v. My invention relates to the construction and operation .of casxugfspears for-the removal of casing and consists, first, in so constructing l that-itcan be made to take a Iirn gripe at any point withinthe casing, and, at the which'can be loosenedto allow of the withdrawal of the tool at will; secondly, in so constructing the spear that its wickers or-wedges cannot escape or be lost in the well; and, thirdly, in' supporting the cas.-
ing from above while the -jarring is done, and' in devices therefor, .whereby any risk of teleburstingthe casing is avoided. The casing of oil, salt, and other Artesian wells consists of va pipe somewhat less in diameter than the bore of the well, and which extends down from the mouth of thewell 'to a point below the fresh-waterv streams. A is placed around thelower end of the easing, (which may bea string of `four or iive hundred feet,) to exclude the surface-water from. the well-chamber be low the casing.
Should the well proveunproductive it be comes desirable to remove and save the cas ing; but this is often diiiicult, and frequently owing to the wedging of the seed-bag, and rock, sediment, and dirt which fallen, and becomes packed around casing .tapering iron stem on the stem S. One
vthe wckers may the casing.
The method iirst adopted to remove -the was by exploding torpedoes near bottom,- which disjointed -the sections, then moving and by the application of jacks to the top ofthe casing` but" both methods frequently so iujured the casing as 'to reu'derit comparatively and were ysuperseded by casing worthless, cutters, which cut the casing at' or justabove the obstructions, so that all-the casing above Vthe cut could be removed in good condition.
In all said methods, however, a Portion of the casing remained in the well, which, if the well' is not abandoned, must be subsequently removed, either by a spear? or by drilling,
which portion is a loss I1\nd.ce.u.ses' 4 troubleand labor.l 1 i Y The object of' my invention is remove oil' and other AArtesian wells by casing from ordinary drilling-jars, with a hold jarring with within near the sticking usually`oecurs,) and at the same time supporting the weight of the casing from above while the jarring is done, thus o bviating the necessity of cutting liability of stripping, bursting, or teleseoping thecasing. I
I will now proceed `to describe-my'invention, sothat others skilled in theart towhich i it appertains may apply the same. v
` In the annexed drawing, S is a solid, square, with pin on top'to'fit ordinary drilling-too s, and conical guide-at bottom, with shoulders zz,`to prevent the wickers from going too far d own, which would burst the easing when itsticks too hard. The four wckers w ware secured by reins R B to a square collar, N, which .works up -and downI or more steel springs, L, are inserted in the stem, to catch in slots a: in the inside of V thesquare collar, so that on down-jarring thewickerscan be caught up and Isupported bythe springs L, andthe tool withdrawn. vThe eye y on the square collar vsecures a line or wire with which to-lift wickers in case'of accident. to the springs. The loose collar K is screwed on and oli', so tha be Fig. 3 shows the4r the sections down to where-it had been disjointed.` ,A second method was` thel bottom of the casing,(where v the casing and the removed when n. the method of taking the the will weight of the casing() fromabove.VA The yoke,
M is secured by two chains, 6,5m clamps Q, at
I a suicient distance apart to-allow jarring to be done by working the beam B, to which the vtenip'elflwlew T is attached, in 4the usual way to drilling-cable and drilling-tools. v The operation of my devices isasfollows:
"The casing having been secured by means of the clamp Q, so that. its weight is supported from above, the spear is fastened to the ordior auy'apprcved jarring-tools, and lowinto the casing the desired distance,
- when thetapering stem' is'raised by means of the rope, lpermittingjfthe slides vor wiokers w 'u to come oppositethedimeters, or
to expand end'gripe the casing, 'the' descent of the wickers being limited by theshoulders s :,fwhieh. prevent 'thestembeiugf drawn past.
AWhile the spear is thu'snedthejarsareused.
vin the el'dinax'y.maimer, 'and` the casing, be-
ing supported from above, cannot burst or down and telesco 'when spear. is to be'withdrawn or its .pennen changed, the stem S. is lowered until sgringors ringsL cafh in slots z, which v sustain the wicker opposite. the smaller diameter-cfr the stem, and. permit d of the movement upm' down. ofthes'pear.
