I. w. BONTA. FURNACE FOR. HEATING BLANKS.

WAW$$Q$X w. M. MM 20. %//4 m UNITED STATES" JAMES w, BONTA, 0;? new ,en renron, PENNSYL LNIAJ IMFBOVEMENT IN Funnnees FOR emrms BLANKS.
Specificaiticnformiirgr ,To all whom it may concern H I 1 Be it known that LJAMES W1" Bonn, of New'Brighton,' Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in-Fur'ilac'es for HeatiltgBlfillk'syOf whieh-the-following is a specification:- 1- i I The general provements in furnaces for heating blanks are as follows: My furnace is self fe'eding and base:
burning, forthe' purpose of effecting perfect combustion, .and consequent economy of fuel,
and, especially" for insuring that the fuel will be;in'candescent'before it'is brought in con tact with the iron to be heated.- My heating chamber is so arranged that the operation of heating blanks may be cond noted in open View of the operator, and the iron, during, thepro; cess of heating, is prevented-from contact with raw coal and, to a great extent, protected from contact with theair.
Bythese'improvements I facilitate the I] eating of the iron. economize fuel and-heat, pre
vent the pockfmarlti'ng of the iron, which results from allowing it, while highly heated, to' conic in contact with raw coa'l, andin a great, measure protect theiron from oxidation, caused j by the exposure of its heated surface to the air My inyentio'n consists of a combined re chamiher and coal-magazine, provided at-the the bottom with a system of" grate-bars, arid arranged in combination with aclosed ashpit; having-an inlet'pipe for the admission-hf a blast of air to supply the necessary oxygen for the'combu'sticn of thefneL. My furnace is provided at the topwith a door or cover for,
closingt he upper end of'the ecalmagezine, and has an opening in its front wall, asho'rt distance above the grate-surface, to allow of "entrance to the heating-chamber, and to ex '.,willpassup through the? grate-bars Theo) 'zdocrii -can be readily opened m empty-the posethe'samefio they-iew of the, upper-uter-v '-lhe ashpithas an" openingfibr the rernova'l of. ashes, which isprdvidedwith a sliding-door, by which it may be closed when Y the furnace is in operation." I form my cdxil-rnagazine preferably with inwardly art of Lettersintent No. 166,336, datedAnguat 3, i875; reissue No; 6,837, dated Jun'ua'ryA, i576; application filed December zi'. 1875. I

The up per part cute rear wall of theffire'chamhei is inclined backward, and constitutes the rear- :bo'sh or boundary of the passage or chute through which fuel fed "from the coal-maga- =zine is discharged into the back, part ofrthe. fire-chamber, from w-hencit falls t'crwardunder the base of. the, front bosh. By thisar- 'ran'gement of the coal-magazine and the firechamher the air-'blast-injected. into the closed v ash-pit is conf nedand concentrated imni'ediately under thefront bosh, the space under the front bosh constituting a chamber equal to the, depth o fthe" opening in which the blanks to be heated are kept. By using the cover of the coal-magazine as a dampeithe eseape of any portion of the E regulated with referencexto golveruing the igilihiOH-Of the descending fuel before it comes in, contact with the iron, This arrangement tends'to protect the-- metal which is being" heated from contact with the airflvhiie it allcws the'o'peratorto inspect the heating operproper degree of The accompanying. drawings are as follows: Figure 1 is a front view of my furnaee. damper, by means-of which the escape ofl'the coalisfed from, the coal-magazine G. This arrangement of the chute G with reference to the coal-magazine and the fire-chamber secures the thorough ignition of the fuel before it is fed. to the grate-bars, and thus precludes the possibility of any raw or green fuel coming in contact with the highly-heated iron in the heatiugtor fire chamber. In addition to this the fuel is fed automatically by its own grai ity to thegrate-bars G O as rapidly as the and while it is fed down under thebase D of the cheek -D, it is so discharged upon the gratebars as to leave an unoccupied space orcham ber, E, under the'eheek D and the front of the mouth'E, into which chamber the metal to be The position of the rear wall F contracts the area .of the fire-chamber, and causes the blast to .act with concentrated force and intensity, within :a small area and, in the most direct'ma'nner, upon the inetal which isbeing heated. H' is adoororcover, which is hinged or-pivoted to the upper surface of the. wall of the furnace, and iii-designed :for use as a products'of combustiemfrom the upper part of the coal-magazine Ggu'm be regulated so as to simply secure the proper ignition of; the fuel before thefueldescends. into the tire-v chambcr, where it-is brought into contact with for the draft or blast is through the mouth, E of the furnace. 'This prevents the admission to operate substantially fol-the purpose specified. the iron which is being heated. By nearly closing the door or coverH=-the chief egress into the heatiugchamber of cold air, which.
would not only ret red the process of heating the metal, butfwo'uld expose it tooxidution.
At thesai'neftime -'the metal in the heatingchamber-is in full .-view of the operator, who
is thus enabled to observe when it has at ftained the propel-degree oi. heat, and toregulate the operation of the furnace; K is a stoke-hole inthe sidewall of the furnace, for
facilitating the cleaning of the furnace and -the dislodgment of slag or clinker which may gather in the fire-chamber,
I claim as my invention in a furnace for 'heating blankss 1. A combined fire-chamber and coal-mega! zine, provided with a. sliding cover at the top, and with an opening. in its side wall a short distance above thegrawsurfacmin combina with a closed ash-pit provided with an. inletpipe for the supply of a blast of air, substautially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a furnace for heating blanks, substantially such as described, the cheeks or bashes D and F, arranged in relation to the grate and feed -.opening, substantially as herein shown-and described.
3. A furnace for heating blanks, consisting -ofthe cheeks or hcshos-DE-of. the form and arrangement shown, movable door..H, blasttube B and mouth E, the whole beingarranged as described, as and JAMES W. BONTA.'
