Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
HENRY BAN'NEN, THOMAS WOODS, AND BENJAMN F. PINE, or PHILA- DELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNEES OF HENRY HANNEN.
IMPROVED PROCESS 0F UTILIZING THE WASTE PRODUCTSF COMBUSTION FOR THE MANUFACTURE 0F WHITE LEA-D AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES.
Specification forming part of'Lettel-s Patent No. 86835, dated February 9. 1869; anptedated February 1, 1869;
. Reissue No. 3,688, dated October 26, 1869.
To all whom it may conoea'n.` v
Be it known that HENRY HANNEN, of the city of Philadelphia and Stat-e of Pennsylvania-,has invented a new Mode or Process of Utilizing the Waste Products of Combustion and we do declare the following to be a f ull and exact description of the same.
The invention consists inpart in thedevices by which the une'onsumed gaseous vpro-y ducts of combustion are withdrawn from the chimney and conducted to chambers for further treatment.
'The invention also consists in forcing those gaseous products of combustion which are usually permitted to escape in to the atmospliere through water impregnated with chlorine, or its equivalent, as apurifying element, thus produciugapure carbon icacid gas available for vari( s manufactures.
It also further consists in accumulating the said gas under pressure produced by the stime force used in the purifying process.
To enable others to practice the invention, the following desgriptiou is given, in Whlch reference is had to the drawings which aecompanyand t'orm a part of these specitications, and in which- Figure lis a sectional elevation of apparatus that may 'b e employed in practicing the invention; Fig. 2, plan view ofvsame arrangement of apparatus; Fig. 3, detached view of parts in which a pump is exhibited in place ol' the fan ol.' Fig. y1.
A represents a portion of the chimney or smoke-conduit of any furnace or fire-place b, la sliding damper to remain open until the fuel is ignited C, a pipe leading oli' from the chimney A just below the damper b, and terminat- ,ing within the chamber 1); l), achamber into which the 'unconsumed gaseous products of the chimney A are tirst received; E, a fau by which the contents ofthe chamber D are with drawn and forced through the pipe F into the close vessel or receiver II. F, a pipe leading from chamber D to reservoir H, and may be suppliedv with fan E, as in Fig, 1, or with pump, as in Fig. 3; H, a reservoir which may be seven oreight feet in height, having chlo. rinated water, or its equivalent, rising frou two or four feet therein; i, a valve at the entrance ofl the pipe C, to be opened whemb is closed and the apparatus workin g j, a screen at the entrance of the pipe F, to prevent the passage 'of cinders andthe like; g, funnel and. stopleock through which the liquid contens 0f the reservoir H are supplied; K, a pumppistou containing a pump-valve; l, another valve acting in connection with piston K; m., space or chamber in upper part of reservoir H, in which is accumulated under pressure ot' the fan or pump the purified carbonio-acid gas; n, cock for regulating the depth ot' Water in the vessel Il; O, pipe through which this gas is withdrawn for use in the manufacture of carbonate of soda, earbonateot' lead, or
l other purposes; P, a cock` for withdrawing thewatery contents of vessel H. 0
In using the above-described apparatus, having opened the valve and closed the damper b,the fan E, or the pump K, (when pump is used,) is set iumotion, and the unconsumed gaseous products of combustion am drawn iirst tothe chamber D, and, leaving tllxecinders and the like there, enter pipe F, whence the fan E or pump K forces them through the descending arn of said pipe F, discharging them into the chlorinated watir within and near the bottom of the vesselH. These products in passing through'the chlorinated .water became purified and a pure carbonic-acid gas. is gathered therefrom, under .pressue, in the chamber m, whence it may ,be
this form, as the same may miser substituted for that explained and illus- 'im'erh What is claimed, and desired to be secured uy Leiters Patent, is
l. The production of' enrbonie-ueid gas from the .vuse gaseous products 0f combustion und gaheriug he same under pressure produeed by hydrostatic column, iu the manner emi by the apparatus described.
be modified und v y 2. Purifying' eurhmliemsid gufi :u'isiug' frein 1 the combustion 0f fuel by passing the sume through water hupreguuted with chlorine, er its equivalent, for the purposes specified.
