s Gv A im. mig tiranti 5mm Letters Paten-l,v No, 19,699, dated ilftlfroh 185B; reissm,"-`L u.3,l, dated November 10, 1&68.
IIVEPROVEMENT IN ROTARY PUMPS.
The Schedule referred Ato in these Letters Patent To all whom 'it yn'zafy' concern.-
Bc it known that I, J Aeiou O. Joven, formerly of i Cincinnati, Ohio, and now otl Dayton, in thel county of Mo11tgoincry,'aiul State of Ohio, have invented" eertaiu new and useful Improvements in Pumps; and I 'do hereby declare that the following is a l'ull, olcar, and exact description ofthe @instruction and operation of the same, reiaeneo being had to' the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of 'reference marked thereon, making.; part ol' this spmitication, in which- .Figure l represents an elevation ol'v the pump, onehall' of the pump-ehambcrsbeing detached therefrom, and representing the working-rants in section.
Figure 2 represents a vertical cross-sectionthrough said pump.
My invention relates to that class of pumps which are eonstriir-ted with an annular punip-chamber, and 1u whieh two pistons uri` fili'ated in ay circular direc# tion, in a manner that will i'.A fulliv settori-h in the 'ollowiupl description.
To enable others skilled in the-artto make and use my invention, l ivilJlf-proeeed to describe the same with iel'eienee to thefi'li'awings,
A represents the punip-ehamber, which is made of an annular shape, as represented in iig, l, and which thus lormsa'tube, whose cross-section is circular.
'lhe pump-elianiber A is open at both I; and d, for the :uhu`lssion oi` water.
.l is :'i shall, which has its bearii in the hub got the pump-eliainber, and which sha 1an bc turned on its axis by applying; powei' to thcl hand-lover C.'
lheslial't l; is formed with an arm, l), the curved ends vlil ol' whieh serve to support the pistons h and h'.
'lhese pistons are composed of tho metal pieces li, providedwith leather packings 1.', and valves F, which valves operate in the usual manner.
1 represents a valve-chaudier o1' casing, which is made ot eireular plates, ot` the same diameter, or 'nearly the same, saiil plates having a head or Flange projecting into :in annular groove. or recess made across the cylinder l\, as shown ai lig. l, so as to do away with any parking', aiul ihef.' are so located as to divide A into two equal seeiious, and i'orma central chamber whollv inside ol` ilie curved e'vlindorrk lhcy are provided n ilili passages l and in, Ioi the admission ot' water, and also wi'i h a wenige-valve, 1, for w'hieh valve a. paient wasgrnnied [oJohn l.. Melherson aiul 'laifobi'LJoyee, on the lllh ol' l"el|^nar,\f, li, aiul which, thcretbre, aiul'l'or the reason that other valves univ he used in the easing, needs no iiiiiher description.
"lf'he ioo halves oi' the piinip-cluimber .k are bolted togclhei b) means oi shew-bolts passing, through the i l i and making part of the same.
holes n oi' the flanohes of said parts, and the joints are made water-tight by the application of India rubber or gutta-percha, whit-h is pla-ced within corresponding grooves in said tranches, as represented in a cross-scct-ion at 0, Eg. 1
' The pump-chamber Ais secured to the air-chamber I L by means of a screw-mint or pipe, p, the air-chamber itself resting, by means o' a flauch, q,y on the top ol' a box, tub, or cistern, M, iro'm which the water is to be pumped, it heilig attached to said top by means of screws or bolts, yr. e
The operation of this machine is as follows:
'B v operating hand-lever C, which is placed on the outside oi the pump, and imparting; to 'it a vibrating nmtion, said motion is communicated to the valves IL and la' bfv nic-ans ol' sha'i'- l and arms l) E.
As the valvo lif' rises, it is closed by the action of the water, and the, passage l is also opened for the passage of the water into the chamber enclosed by the easing l, from whieh it passes up into the air-chamber and out through hose N.
When the vahe la. rises, valve li descends, and is opened, the valve beinelv lil'ted' by? the water in the tank M, which lills that sideol' the pump-chamber in which the valve lz works, and at the next stroke the water is forced through the opening in, and into thel air-chamber, as before, at i'und lt will be seen, by this operation, that this pump is a orewpunii'i, which is especially uscful where. a jet of water ot" considerable l'orce is required, as for extinguishing lires, watering gardens, aiul other similar purposes, in whieli case the pump can be attached to a movable.l water-tight box or tank, as well as to wells and cisterus. i
.Having tluisft'ull)Y described my invention,
What claim :is new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. ',llie exit-valve chamber I, when loca-ted wholly lwithin tho curved cylinder A, and heldin place by beads or pi'oieetions littin; annular grooves of the curved cylinder. substantially as and l'or the purposes spociiiegl.
'.5. The centrally-lireared shaft or bearing B, arm l), and they two' arms lL., provided, at their ends, with pistons oi' pluugers, in combination with the annular chamber A, provided with ihe eenwally-interposed .vulve-elninibei' l, so arranged lli: -thij can be, operaed by suitable levers or shal'i's located outside oi' the cylinder, substantialliy as and lor tho purposes speciiied,
JACOB L). JOYCE.
