MESNE ASSIGNMENTS OF GEORGE VAN DERBURGH. Letters Paten/t No. 34,123, dated Januari; T, 1862*; reissue No. 2,501, 4dated March 5, 1867;
T HE NEW YORK QUARTZ COMPANY, OE NEW YOEK, N`Y.,ASSIGNEES BY tlgt Sdnhult rrfemh tu iii-ttes: Effettua @aient mn making lputt nf tigt mit.
v TO ALLWHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it' known that I GEORGE E. VAN DEnnURGH, of N ew York city, in vthe county and State of New York, (late of Mamaroneck in said St`ate, have invented a new andv useful Method of Producing Artiiicial Stone for Grinding and other Purposes; that I did obtain Letters Patent of .the United States for the same, bearing date the seventh day of January, 1862, that the specification of my said invention was'defective, and that I do therefore now make and declare the following to be a ful'l and exact description of said invention. I
The object of my invention is the production off mery-wheels, whet-stones, 8m., by the combination of particles f ,emery, corundum, F runklinite, or glass, in a' 7suitably comminuted'state, or ol sand-stone, buhr-stone,
or other sharp, gritty material. And my said invention consists in employing an alkaline silicate, or other' material 'capable of vitrifnction at a comparatively low temperature, as o. flux or cementing material to. unite by its vitrifaction'lny suitablcpgritty and cutting substances into an artificial stone or solid mass.
The process of manufacturing my improved articial stone for grinding and cuttingpurposes is as follows:
AThe e'mery, corundum, or other gritty or cutting material to form the bcrly of the stone, having-'been irst ground tothe finencss desired in its' texture, is thoroughly incorporated with s vitrescent lalkaline silicate, -such as the water-glass of commerce, or the liquidsilicate produced by thc-formula. specified in the Letters Patent granted to me o n the 29th day of November, 1860', in such proportion ns to producen. pasty l" plsstlsf"`' This plastic mass is then nl oulded or formed into any'desired shape, either with or'I without pressure,l the elfect of the application of pressure being to produce a greater condensation of the stone. Where it is desirable to use crystals of silicate, or silicate which has become hard and dry, it is rst re'duccd'to powder and dissolved, und thereafter used as above specified, or such crystallized silicate may he mixed with thc gritty particles in v a dry state, and the mass be uftcrwnrdbrought -to a proper plastic condition with water. The proportion' of drysilicnteA and of gritty particles should .be about one part of .powdered silica to four parts of emeryro'r itsiequivnlent.' 'After the plastic mass of emery and silica has beenpropcrly moulded, the articles produced are first thoroughly dried by exposure to'a' comparatively low temperature, say .from 100 to 150, and are their submitted. fortwo orthree hours to n more Aintense curing'or tcughening tempernture,'which must be highzenough to produce u vitrifaction of the alkaline silicate used ass i'iux, (say nbout.,1,800l or a-dull red` heat,) and lyet not be 'sniciently'l intense to nect or impair the cutting-properties of the gritty portion of said articles. In this connection I would observe that I have myself produced the best resultsby employing ajsand-bath as the'inedium of colnmunicatng the proper degree of curing andtoughenin'g'heat tothe said mouldcd'srticles, and that Ials'o prefer vitrescent' ux, previously intermin to exclude sir fron the -oven' or chamber in which the articles sro baked or cured.
vHaving thus fnllydescribed my invention., whatI claim ss new, und desire to secu'e'by Letters Patent, is'- f i 1-. The combination of particles of emery or other gritty or-cuttin; materials into sn artificial stone or substance for, grinding, polishing, and other'purposes, by the`vitrifactiqn or partiel vitrifactioh of any suitable i gled with said particles, all substantially in the manner heifenset forth'.l
2. lhe combination of sand or particles of veinery, gr onnd-glnss, or any other 'suitsble'grittypr cdtting' particles, with on alkaline silicate or other v itrescent iiux, for the purpose of producing een' fsrticial grinding.
and polishing stone, bythe vitrff' 'cton of said ux under then influence-of heat,'substs ntislly.in the-manneri- Vhereinsetforth. A
3.11 claim also curing' and hardening yplastic combination of. grittypsrticlcs with s yitroscible ux', by v, rst' subjecting thesame to a' moderate heat until dry, and afterwards fo the actionl of @higher temperature,y
until s partial or'entiro vitrif'sction'of theiiux is produced, substantially in the manner herein sotforth.'
. Witness my hand to this specicstion this'ffgurth day of Jsnusjry, A.. D. 1867. v l
. i GEORGE-6E. VANA DEBBURGH,
In the presence of y GEO. A. MAYnEw, Jim. T. Snoox.
