The present invention relates to rubber or rubgarments, or the like articles, such as shoes, dolls, bed sheets, dress shields. baby pants and numerous other commodities, which come in contact with the body or are subjected to body or prevent or inhibit culture of a large variety of'fungi or bacteria; and more specifically the 1 provision of such rubber and rubberized'garment or article having an antiseptic "substance or substances incorporated therein and available in an emcacious state and amounts, in the presence of alkaline'solutions, so as to inhibit develop- 50 ment of or to destroy fungi or bacteria commonv 81:; already in or which may develop in body emisons.
Oneof the desiderata after conception of the broad invention was to find those antiseptic ele- 20 ments, compounds or substances which would not only be compatible in a rubber compound but which would compound with or incorporate in the rubber in a manner to. be present and leach out in suiiicient quantities to destroy or .inhibit growth of fungi and bacteria, reduce the pungent odors usually attendant with the wear- I ing of rubber garments, and to overcome the irritating effects of body secretions.
Furthermore, it was a desideratum in the pres- 35 ent invention to preferably find antiseptic substances which'may be handled in a rubber compound and which would periorm, as above stated. in the presence of an alkaline condition, because the present invention is an addition or improvel -ment upon the disclosures in co-pending applications Ser. No. 529,304 of Jacob Stein and Ser. No. 590,524 of Jacob Stein and Hugh H. Mosher, V v 1 the purpose of producing a rubberor rubberized garment which may be worn next to or near the skin of, the body without the irritating and discomforting eilects and odors resultingf om perspiration and the end products of protein metabolisms. Said applications have now 50 been issued as U. 8. Patents No. 2,023,251 and No. 2,023,252, and they .rela teto rubber or rubberized products which are sufiiciently dense-to be impenetrable to air, water, or moisture.
, The particular garments or articles to which 55 the present invention pertains: are rubber crib January 14, 1037,
(01. rot-2s) and hospital sheets, baby pants, bloomers. ladies sanitary articles, reducing girdles or I corsets, bathing caps, bathing shoes, dolls, and numerous others, and to which theapplication of the present invention will be obvious in-the light of the present disclosure. It is found that the objects vention may be accomplished, preferably, by combining salicylamide (and commonly known in the trade ..as Shir1in) with'any desired rubber" compound or mix, while the rubber compound is being masticated or'milled; but it is preferred that the rubber compound shall also have incorporated throughout its-mass a water soluble basic ingredient, such as sodium carbonate, or sodium bicarbonate, borax, di-sodium phosphate, tri-sodium phosphate or sodium silicats or the corresponding potassium and ammonium salts, for the purpose of. neutralizing the acidity in body emissions and absorbing certain end products of protein metabolisms present in body emissions and which cause an-irritating, unhealthy and uncomfortable condition when wearing rubber garments. -While salicylamide is the preferred antiseptic of the present iningredient of the improved rubber composition,
as shown 'by the specific example given above, nevertheless, it has been discovered that certain other antiseptic substances may be substituted for the salicylamide. These substitutes include: ,solid chlorothymol; parachlorphenol; hexylresorcinol; and a number of essential oils, such as oil of violet, also a phenol derivative such as thymol, or pineol, and similar ingredients, or any combination of these ingredients.
Applicants .have discovered that these substitutes for salicylamide are compatible with the rubber compound and also are effective for the above purposes "even after combination with the rubber mix and, also, where the rubber mix contains 'awater soluble alkaline substance, as specified above.
This soluble alkaline substance may be' sodium carbonate of approximately 3 to 5% by weight of rubber mixed; or may be borax in the same proportions. However, itis found that amounts from 1% to by weightmay be used with favorable results.

As a'new article of manufacture. an article of wearing apparel having sheet rubber parts, adapted for wear adjacent the body emissions, saidrubber parts having incorporatedtherein I 1 and dispersed throughout a substantial propor tion of water soluble basic agents for neutralizi 7 ing acids and for absorbing and neutralizing the end-products of human protein metabolisms, and isalicylamide.
2. As a new article of manufacture, an article of wearing apparel having sheet rubber parts adapted .for wear adjacent the body emissions, said rubber parts including sodium carbonate, and salicylamide, said ingredients being dispersed through the rubber and being leachable from the rubber in the presence of body emissions.
3. As a new article of ,manufacturaan article of wearing apparel having sheet rubber parts adapted for wear adiacent the body emissions, said rubber parts having incorporated therein and dispersed throughouta substantial proportion of water soluble basic agents for neutralizing acids and for absorbing and neutralizing the end products of human protein metabolisms, and antiseptic substances selected from the following group: salicylamide, chlorothymol, parachlorphenol, hexylresorcinol, oil of violet, tbymol,
pineol; phenols, cresols and derivatives of the same, and fluosilicates.
4. As a new article of manufacture, an article ofwearlng'apparel' having sheet rubber parts adapted for wear adjacent the body emissions, said rubber parts' including salicylamide incorporated therein and dispersed throughout. 5. As a new article of manufacture, an article of wearing apparel having sheet rubber parts adapted for wear adjacu it the bodyemissions, said rubber parts having incorporated throughout the mass thereof antiseptic substances seiected from the following group: salicylamide, chlorothymol, parachlorphenol, hexylresorcinol, oil of violet; thymol, pineol; phenols, cresols and derivatives of the same, and fluosilicates. 6. As a new article of manufacture, an article of wearing apparel havingrubber parts adapted for wear adjacent body emissions, said rubberparts having incorporated throughout the mass thereof, .a soluble alkaline substance and an antiseptic substance selected from the following 5 group: salicylamide, chlorothymol, parachlor-r phenol, hexylresorcinol, oil of violet, thymol,
pineol, phenols, cresols and derivatives of the same, and fluosilicates.

9. A composition of matter adapted for the manufacture of wearing. apparel, drus shoes, dolls, ladies sanitary articles, crib and hospital sheets, and commodities which come in contact with the body and are subjected to body emisssions comprising rubber, salicylamide in the proportion of three to five percent by weight-of the rubber, sulfur, accelerator and a filler, said salicylamide being leachable by bodyemissions to produce an antiseptic action on fungi and bacteria present in the body emissions without irritating and discomforting effects on the body.

A composition of matter adapted for use in the manufacture of wearing apparel, dress shields, shoes, dolls, ladies sanitary articles, crib and hospita] sheets, and commodities which come in contact with the body and are subjected to body emissions, comprising rubber and an organic antiseptic ingredient incorporated in said rubber and compatible therewith and which can be leached from said composition by said body emissions in such an amount as to be available in an eiilcacious state in use, to produce an antiseptic action on,
fungi and bacteria present in the body emissions without irritating and discomforting effects on the body.
11. A composition of matter adapted for use in the manufacture of wearing apparel, dress shields, shoes, dolls, jladies sanitary articles, crib and 'amount as to be available in an emcacious state,

12. Sheet material adapted for use in the manufacture of, wearing apparel, dress shields, shoes,
dolls, ladies sanitary articles, crib and hospital sheets, and commodities which come. in contact with the body and are subjected to body emissions, comprising rubber and an organic antiseptic ingredient incorporated in and rubber and compatible therewith and which can be leached from said sheet material by said body emissions and in such an amount as to be available in an efllcacious state in use to produce an antiseptic action on fungi and bacteria present in the body emissions without irritating and discomforting eifects on the-body.

Sheet material adapted for use in the manufactureof wearing apparel, dress shields, shoes, dolls, ladies sanitary articles, crib and hospital sheets, and commodities which come in contact with the body and are subjected to body emissions comprising rubber, a leachable erewith and which'can be leached fron 'said sheet materialbysaidbodyemissionsandinsuchan amount as to be available in anemcacious state n-i gredient and an organic antiseptic-ingredient incorporated in said rubber and compatible immwmaucusmmmmmm andbacteriapresentinthehodywithout irritatin: and disoomlortlnz elects on the body.
