*My invention relates to a valve'or fitting,
for use in a pipe line, or 4ethelike. The invention provides a fitting which acts as a coupling l'or pipes, or the vlikcfand operates to close one Vot the pipes when allow separation of the pipes.'
It vis an object of the invention to provide a simple, economical fitting for use in a pipe line to act in place of an ordinary cutout cock, or valve. e l. It is an Object oit" the inventionrto provide a fitting useful generally in place of the ordinary pipe union.
` Another object iol the invention is to provide a. fitting ot the character mentioned in the nature of `a union that can be installed inv i a pipe line 'without turning either of the pipes to which it is connected. r A.v further object ofthe invention is to `provide a fitting of the character mentioned tion or to replace parts. v
e Another object ofl the invention is to provide a vunion fitting which automatically "which can be readilyT taken apart for inspec-v `closes to prevent flow fromv one pipe upon `being releasedto allow Vseparation of the i pipes. l
Other objects and advantages of the `invention will appear fro1n. "the` following specification in `which reference is made 'to the accompanying drawings, vinlwhich:
F ig. l is a side. elevation showing `an ex#- ternal view of theA complete valve orfi'tting, and
the parts shown inFig.l l. j
e The fitting provided by my invention, although acting as a valve, is used generally as a union or pipe coupling, is without a stem or operating handle characteristic. of valves, and is normally open when in operating position connecting two pipes, or the like. Ordinarily, the fitting is closed only when it is desired to stop the. passage of' fluid, (water, steam, oil,l gas, air, etc.,) through on the said end of the nipple to `(1o-operatek with the end of the member din compressreleased to iFig. `2 is a longitudinal sectional view ol .packing c.
ing packing c, and a valve carried ,by the memberd'to col-'operate with the .inner end ofthe nipple a toy close thefpassage through the litting y The nipple a is to be conneetedwith a pipe, or Ithefllike, and for that purpose it vmayhave its outer end portion screwthreaded. e lThe inner end portion ot the nipple is threaded throughout a substantial portion to Carry the bodymember Z and nut b and to allow4 for thedesired operation of `the Adevice as hereinafter described.`
n The body member (l is screwthreaded onto the innerend portion of the nipple'and is recessed. or formed Ywith av chamber" to pass uid when thefittiiig is inthe normal working posi-tion. The body Amember Iis adapted to be connected lwith a. pipe, or the .threaded at m vand externally threadedv atl. AFurther, I show the end part lc detachable from :the restvof the bodymeniberthrough a screw conneotion.` i Thevalve f is carried by the body member" (l to c'o-operate with a'seatwil at th'einner vend ofy the; nipple af haves l'ownthe val've carried by member z' of t e'body sothat iit f faces ther inner .endof the'nipple. The ,valve V ffis "shown -with a `washer"part 'detachable from the member z' and'provided with ydevtents g which receive lugs 3h. :The valve wmay be solid with orformeddirectly ,on the member without awasher in which case the joint between the valve :and seat-,may .be
ground. I In `the construction shown, the member z" has ports j'connecting with the chamber e to pass fluid 'when' the fitting is in operating `position. i
i The packing means is provided vbetween the body and nipple to prevent leakage `when the fitting is in operating position. `I provide an over-hanging lip 0 on the end of the body to meet the .outer point of the flange on thel jam nut bandthereby hold-and cover the The jam nut Z) also acts as a jam or lock nut. y
lThe fitting may be installed asa union for 'connecting two pipes by first backing away the jam nut and turningl the body d onto the long threaded portion of the nipple as far as it will go. The nipple can then be connected to one pipe and the body, or end part y1c, to the otherA pipe by screwing the body outward on the nipplev and' to its `pipe and by screwing `the nipple rto its pipe. This applicationV of the fitting causesthe valve-f to'be awayfrom its seat 'n whenV the pipes are connected and, therefore, the fitting acts asia tween theconnectedpipes through thefit-r ting. The flow .is through the nipple, `past the valve fthrough lthe chamber c, throughv theports j and through the body parta,
To closethe fitting and thuscutoi or stop I vthe fiow of Huid, the valve f is moved into y cumstances require.
engagement with the seat n. n lThis mayv be done by screwing the nipple into the body or hyscfrewving the hodyonto the nipple, as cirl ,n The fitting can be used to advantage in inf terior Work Where neatness and compactness are desirable. `This is because the device has no protruding parts, such'as a valvestein or handle andit reduces danger of dripping -so common to cut-out' cocks and valves. An-
other feature of great advantage isvthe ease with which the fittingY can be opened for inspection or repairs.' This is accomplished by backing away the jam nut and disconnecting the bodyparts".
Ido not Wish i 4 constructionor use herein set forth, but reF the art. r
.Havingdescribed myinvention, I n
