- janvnn'rrsme DEVICE FOR wmenmc SCALES.
Original no. 1,340,923, dated To all whom it may concern: 1' I Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. VANDER- CAR, of Cohoes, in the county of Albany,- in the State of New York, have. invented'new and useful Improvements in' Advertising .Devices for Weighing Scales, of'which the following, taken in connection with the" accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to certain improvements. in advertising attachments for weighing-scales, inwhich a suitable dial is mountedupon the'upper end of an upright standard carried'by a laterally projecting base upon .which a platform is mounted in an well .known manner so as to have a slight vertical movement relatively to the base. Y
Suitable mechanism is also provided for transmitting. motion from the movable plat I platform involves,- in thisinstance, the use of: a vertical reciprocatory frame within the dialcase and connected'to a-main support- 80 ing frame by retracting springs for returning .the movable parts-to their normal positions with the pointer at the zero graduation of thedial.
The main objectof my present invention 5 isto provide the upper portionof the dial ca'se Witha' supplemental case having a lengthwise opening in'the front side thereof and adapted to, contain a multi-sided rotary drum having advertising matteron each a) side and to provide suitable means operated by thevertical movable frame for rotating said drum step by step at each elevation of 'themovable latform for successively presenting the si es of the drum containing the advertlsing matter to the opening in the front} of the supplemental case, where it is easily-visible to, the operator of the-platform. I
Another object is to provide means for In preventing the ,rotation of the drum ina reversedirectionand "for holding it in its adjustedposition. I v
A further object is to provide the supple- J'uly 20, 1920, Serial No. 86,081, flled l iebruary 28, 1920. reissue filed June6, 1922. Serial No. 566,422.
mental case. witha'movable end wall to per mit the drum to beremoved and replaced when necessary to change the advertising matter thereon or for any other cause. In the drawings: i Figure 1 is a front elevation of the upper portion of a -weighing-scales showing my improved advertising device thereon.
Figure 2 ,is a sectional view through the interior. of the dial case and supplemental case and upper portion of the standard case and'upperportion of the standard showing the vertical movable frame and retracting means therefor, and-also showing the connectionsbetween said frame and the adver tising drum for rotating the latter step by igure 3 is an end view of the supplemental case and drum and adjacent portion of the dial case, the movable end wall being open, i
Figure lis, a transverse vertical sectional vie-w taken on line 4-4, Fig. 1. Y
Inorder that my invention may be clearly understood, I have shown the upper portion of an upright column or standard -1 carrying at its upper end a dial case -2- which is adapted to receive and support a supplemental advertising case -3 "above the dial, as 4.
The column 1-- is made of any desired height to permit the dial to be readily visible .to the user when standing upon the platform, the lower end of the colunm being secured to'any Well known form of base projecting forwardly therefrom and carrying the usual platform which has a slight vertical movement and is mounted upon the usual supporting levers common in weighing-scales of this character.
. An indicator or pointer -5- is pivoted at +6- coaxial with the dial 4 to 'projectinglugs -8-in-laterally spaced relation-forreceiving a pair of adjustable an- 'chor bolts "-9' having pendent members ends attached to the opposite arms of a U- a ueatmi m- 1-0-- pivoted thereto, a pair of springs ;11 areattached at'theirupper ends to 'themembers ,.10 and have their lower said connections including, in this instance,.

frame 12 and operates to draw said frame downwardly against actionv of the retracting springs 11 when pressure 1s applied to the movable platform not shown;
The vertical movement of, the frame 12 is utilized to operate a rotary advertising drumv14 through the mediumof apush-rod -"15-+ hav-ingo'its lowerendiatvtached to alaterally" projecting'arm '16 on the frame :-l2 and its upperend provided with a pawl l-7 for engagement with the. teeth of a vgear -wheel-:-18 which meshes with a similar.- gear- 'l8 on one end ofthe (Jimm e-I ka I This drum is mounted upon a: central shaft or spindle-+19 which is journal'ed at one'endiin abearing 20win the fixed endwall ofthe supplemental case 3+ at right-angles to ithe axisofmovement ofthe pointer '5;,'S&lCl ClIlilH1"b'elfig angular or multi-sidedin cross-sections, in this instance, octagonahg and wholly. Within the supplemental case 3-. I prefer, however,- to support the. other endsof: the drum nearest the movable end wall 1 upon a a supplemental bearing '2.0': which is removably secured to the top of and within the case 3+ and upon which the gear or ratchetwheel -'-'-18 is journaled, thus permitting the endwall 3 to be; opened for the removal and replacement of the advertising cards without disturbing the drum: 7
f The major portion of the A case is preferably circular in cross-section and is provided with an opening #21- in: its front side, corresponding approximately in width andulength to the lengtha-ndwidth of one side of the drum 14 one end of the case being fixed, while the other end, as-3'- is preferably hinged atfi22 to permit it to be openedi'and closed for the removal a-nd replacement of. the. drum when desired. l Thepawl '117f is pivoted to the upper end of the: push-rod #15 which is guided in a vertical opening in- 4 one side of the dial'case said p'awl being free to ride'overthefteeth'of the gear against the action ofa light retracting spring 17f a's the rod '15 isdrawn downwardly. and to engage said teeth to rotate the dru'mzoneztooth space at each-upward movement of: the: frame -12:: by: the Springs 11" toaavoidextra; load uponthe weighing-scales; p a 7 i The numberof teeth in the ratchet wheel -18-: preferably correspond-ztoxthe number :of :1 sides :pf the drinnand-"are -s aced tcvecrrespendto the. movement of the: mute 12- so that at each upward movement of said frame, the-pawl17 will rotate the drum one tooth spaceto-successivelyregisterits several sides with the opening '21, eachside of the drum being provided'with such advertising matter asitr may be desired to display through saidopening,
' A detent -24 is pivoted atone end to alug -2 5;on-the: case 3 and has its other end adapted to'engage the teeth of the gear; wheel 18-"-' l to prevent reverse each operation 1 with opposite grooves or ways :27* into which the cardzo-r other member bearing advertising matter may be readily inserted and which serve to. .retain said card or plate in. operative. position, while, at the same time, permitting itsfiendwis'e removal and replacement by other cards when necessary or desirable. y i
It has not been deemed'necessaryto show theplatforin and mechanism for transmitting motion therefrom to" the" draw rod 13',aforthe reason ithat sue-h mechanism is well understoodby-thoseskilled 'in the art,'-'and,' in'like manner, any suitablerhechanismmay be. employed for transmitting motion from the movable-frame "'-'12"to the pointer. because such mechanism does-not form a partof'iny present invention.
It will be observed that the advertising drum iserotated intermittin'gly in one direction only about an axis atright angles to that ofzith'e pointer -5, thereby successively presenting the several" advertising faces of the drum to the sight opening '2L at the same side ofthe scales as the dial '4+ and-that this intermittent rotary motion -is producedby the power of theretracting Inca-11s" as the springs '-11- for the frame immediate1y fo11owing the removal of the 1 weight font-the platform by which theframe 'is operated against the action of the retracting; means '1 1', thereby relieving the weighingat one end of the drum an operatively connected thereto, a pawl engaged with the ratchet wheel and a rod connecting themovable frame with said pawl to cause the rotation of the drum step by step one tooth space at a time at each successive movement of the framein one direction.
2. In aweighing scale vof the character described, the combinationof a dial case, a dial in the front side thereof, a vertical reciprocator frame movable within the dial case, a supp emental case secured to the top of the dial case and provided with an opening in its front side, a multi-sided equilateral drum rotatably mounted within the supplemental case and having. its sides movable across and in close-proximity to the opening therein, means actuated by succes-- sive movements of said frame in one direction for rotating thedrum step by step to successively present the several sides to said opening, and means for preventing a reverse movement of the drum.
3. In a weighing scale of the character described, the combination of a dial, a pointer movable about the axis of the dial, weight operated means for moving the pointer in one direction, retracting means for the weight-operated means to move the pointer in an opposite direction, an advertising drum rotatable about an axis at right angles to that of the pointer, and means operated by the power of said retracting means for rotating said drum about its axis only when the weight-operated means is rotated by said retracting means.
4. In a weighing scale of the character described, a pointer movable about an axis, weight-operated means for operating the pointer in. one direction, retracting means for returning the first named means, an advertising device movable about an axis at right angles to that of the pointer, means actuated by the return of the first named means for moving the advertising device in one direction only about its axis, and means for preventing'the movement of. the advertising device in the opposite direction.
5. The combination with a weighing mechanism having a movable element actuated in one direction by the object Weighed,
and means for retracting said element after each weighing operation, of a rotary advertising drum, and means actuated by the retracting movement of said element for rotating the drum step by step in one and the same direction at each retracting movement of said element.
6. The combination of a weighing mechanism, a rotary advertising drum, retractin means for a weight-actuated part of sai mechanism, and means actuated byt-he retracting movement of said part for rotating the drum step by step, in one and the same direction at each retracting movement.
7. The combination with a weighing scales having a dial supporting case, a circular dial, a pointer movable around the dial, weight-actuated means for operating the pointer and means for retracting a weight-actuated part of said means, of a supplemental case mounted on the dial sup porting case wholly above the dial, an advertising drum journaled in the supplemental case wholly above the pointer operating means, and means actuated by the retracting movement of said part for rotating the drum step by step at each retracting movement of said part.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 2nd day of June, 1922.
WILLIAM J. VANDERCAR.
