ing machines or scales, constructed on the balance principle and provided with computation cylinders adapted and intended to indicate not only the weight of the com modity but also the total price of any glven quantity.
The object of my invention is to produce a machine of this kind which will be accurate and durable, and which will be simple in construction and cheap to manufacture.
My invention will be readily understood from an explanation of the preferred embodiment illustrated in the drawing accompanying and forming part of this speclfication. Referring to this drawing, Flgure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the machine; Fi 2 is a rear View; Fig. 3 is a plan view, an Fig. 4 is a detail view showlng the arrangement of the rack and gear wheel employed to rotate the computation cyllnder.
Referring in detail to the machine lllllS- trated, the numeral 1 designates the base of the machine on which there is mounted a hollow column 2 containing operatlng mechanism and supporting the cylinder casing 3. A platformlever 4 is provided and is supported by columns 5 on the base of the machine through agate bearmgs 6 and knifeedge pivot members 7. The platform lever is provided with a counter-balance weight 8 and supports the receiving platform 9. The latter is provided with :1 ate bearings 10 which rest on the knifege pivots 11 carried by the platform lever. In order that the platform may rest evenly n these pivots and be maintained in position, it is provided with a downwardly-extending member 12 rigidly secured to the platform at one end and connected at the other end to the link 13. This link allows the platform to move freely up and down with the platform lever but prevents it tilting forward or backward. At its forward end the platform lever 4 is provided with a kn1feedge pivot 14 which rests on a bearing 15 secured to the lower end of the vertical rod 16. This vertical rod near its lower end is provided with oppositely-dis osed racks 36, and these racks are engaged by segmental gear wheels 17. Balance weights 18 are secured to the gears 17 and are so disposed that as the vertical rod 16 is forced down by the platform lever these weights will resist its downward movement and will be moved through the arc of a circle. At its upper end the vertical rod 16 is provided with a rack 19 whichrack engages the gear wheel 20 fixed on the spindle 21 of the computatlon cylinder 22. The rack 19 is held 1n engagement with the gear wheel 20 by the wheel 32. In order to steady the operation of the machine a dash pot 23 is provided, filled. with any suitable liquid, and
- the plunger 24 of this dash pot is connected with the platform lever as shown. In order to adjust the mechanism and bring the cylinder to zero reading when there is no' weight on the platform, the vertical rod 16 is made in two parts and is provided with an adjustment nut 25 having a threaded engagement with the upper half of the rod 16 and fittin snugly in the slot 26 of the yoke 27 forme as an integral part of the lower half of the rod 16.
In practising my invention, any suitable arrangement of numerals may be employed on the computation cylinder to indicate the weight of the commodity and the total price. I prefer an arrangement whereby both the weight of the" commodity and the total price of the same may be read both by the salesman and the purchaser, from opposite sides of the cylinder, and to eflect this I provide the cylinder with duplicate sets of numerals or figures. A window 28 is provided on one side of the drum for the customers use, and a separate window 29 on the other side for the salesmans observation.
During the assembling of the machine the length of the rod 16 is adjusted until the computation cylinder stands at zero, and the arrangement is such that when this adjustment is reached the balance weights 18 hang insubstantially the position shown in the drawing. When a commodity is placed on the receiving platform, the end of the platform lever opposite the weight 8 is depressed and carries down with it the vertical rod 16, which raises the weights 18 and turns the cylinder 22 until 1t correctly indicates the weight of the commodity and the price. It is understood, of

course, that the various moving parts of the machine should be as free from friction as possible, and ball bearings should preferably bevused to support the cylinder and the wheels 17 and 32. It is also obvious that the gear wheels 17 and 20 should engage the racks 36 and 19 in a free and easy manner, but there should be no lost motion.
While I have described only one embodiment of my invention, I am aware that other embodiments may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of my claim.
What I claim as my inventlon 1s:
In a machine of the kind described, a computation cylinder journaled to swing around its axis, a gearwheel thereon, a vertically movable rod, a rack thereon near its upper end in engagement with said gearwheel, two oppositely disposed racks on said rod near its lower end, segmental gearweights mounted in said adapted to be lifted and wheels journaled adjacent said rod and in engagement with said racks, balance gear-wheels and moved in the are of a circle when the gear-wheels are turned by the downward movementof the vertical rod, a platform lever connected with and adapted to move said vertical rod, a dash pot connected with said platform lever, a computation, cylinder, a drum surrounding said cylinder, two complete sets of compulation figures one side of the drum, so disposed that one set of figures may be read by the customer, and a second window on the other side, so disposed that the other set may be read by the salesman.
