.,rIAV ..1 I Tofall fghm it may concern:
own that I, ROBERTS. MENNIL' vac itizen of Canada, and resident of Chieago, "'inthe county of- Cook audrState of .Illfnoimfhave invented certain new and use-- ['ful {Improvements'in Staybolts; and I do "here'by declare the following to be a, full,
clear, and exact description of the inven- .ti0n, such-1 as rwillenable -others skilled in (use 'the Isame.`
Veialt to which it appertams to make' and S- "Mylinvent'on relates to improvements in j''1* taybolts, particularly .those usedm locomotivefboiler construction. 1.5iA
' I. movement between the outside sheet'and 'the E inside sheet which sheets are spaced onl a -'fefw `inches apart.' in certaln places.
Ilslich construction there is a lrelative he vs taybolts ,'therefore, must permit this rela?, vtive' movement in VYaddition to preventing spreading 4or said sheets due to the pressure developed;
ie"'As'heretoforeconstructed, suchstay bolts as have gone into general commercial use, providea ballv and Socket Joint, the socket "beingformed in a .sleeve which is screw.
threaded in toan 'opening in the sheet. The sleeve-is provided with a cap to prevent leakage of the water 'which fills the space between the sheets or of't-he steam above the water level.
'The Operation of the holes in the outsi. sheets is expensive, as is lalso the sleeve itself, and since the Stay bolts are fairly close together, an 'unnecessarily large amount of material is removed to provide room for the sleeve between the bolt and the walls of Said opening. One of the Objects of the present invention is tO provide a practical constructionwherei in a cap may be employed for the headv of the stavbolt ing inthe outer sheet just large enough to accommodate the shank of said bolt whereby-- the objectionable larger openings referred to *are avoided. -v Y,
lAnother object is to provide a construcon wherein the screw-threading -ofthe opening is dispensed with.
Afurther object is to provide'a construction `wherein the head mf the stay bolt is of this character drilling and ltapping i in conpmction with an open- `wall 6 to holdv Appllcatibnfor reissue led September 24, 1919.
-o'lrter sheet, whereby a permanently tight joint 1s `Secured.4 d
An additional pbje'ctis to provide a cap A having a removable portlou to expose the head of the stay bolt. O ther objects and advantages will be 'apparent from the subsequent-description'o the several vembodiments of the invention illustrated herein.
In the drawing-- E Figurel is a sectional view showing one erifibodiment of the` invention, and
similai vuewsshowing 65 Figs. 2 and 3 are modifications. v
In each figure of the drawing, and 6 denote the walls of'a boiler re-box or similar structure `vto'which the stay bolt '7 is Tp-- plied. The holt is threaded .at one end, u s indicated at 8, to screw into a threaded openingV in the wall '5, and` its protruding end is spread, as-indicated at The other end of the bolt passes opening 10 in'the wall 6, and said end has an enlarged head 11 with a spherical beuring surface. The outer face of thev head is preferably ,flat and has a Socket 12 to receive as uitable tool whereby' the bolt may be screwed into the threaded opening in the Wall` 5. i
The opening 10 is flared. inwardly to allow lateral play of the bolt `7 and its outer endv is enlarged to form a'seatV 13 for the head 1l, saidfseat conforming toi-they contour of head tov permit pivotal movement of the In order,` to vpreventleakage around ,the fliolt head 11', a cap or'housing 14 is WeldedA .to the wall 5, on
vented without aectingf'the lfreedom of movement OrA flexiblity of the bolt. -Thebolt head seats directly in the' Wall 6 without the interposition lof sleeves orbushin loosely through an.
of any kind.' and as the cap 14 is 4welded on, I
a threaded opening need not be made in the the cap'. through which the its head seats need be only large4 The opening 10 bolt passes and in which n enough 'to' ;v
accommodate said parts, in view of whichV the wall is not necessarily weakened.
The inner sheet and the outer sheet 6 are spaced several inches apart in practice, 5 sheet 5- constituting the wall of the fire-box and the louter sheet being-accessible, thereby permitting inspection, etc. The space between the sheets is filled with water upto a certain level under the usual boiler preswelded in place.
`Fig'. 2 shows a circular member nipple or broken one, after which a newcap may be .l
thereof to encircle the protruding portion o f the bolt head 11. This nipple is externally screw-threaded to receive a cap or cover'in the form of a cap nut 16. This structure orv housing also provides an inclosure lfor the bolt head to prevent leakage around the same without affecting the exibility of the bolt, and lenables the bolt to be replaced without removing thewelded inclosure. -Fig. 3 shows'a cap or housing 17 similar to the cap 14, but it is provided at the center with'a screw-threaded opening to receive a closure iii the forni of a screw plug 18 which is removable to permit inspection 'of the stay bolt head.
It will be noted that the bolt head ll'does .not extend outward as far as the outer end of the cap or the nipple,\vhereby said bolt head is spaced from the outer end of the cap so that the pivotal movement of the bolt is not interfered with.
It is obvious that certain features disclosedin connection with one figure may be v employed in connection with features disclosedin the otherv figures and that in all three forms of device, a'cap or inclosure is formed for the head of the bolt, said -inclosure being preferably, but notnecessarily, a, circular member having an outer wall '55 which in Fig, 1 is integral, in Fig. 2 is removable as an entirety, and in Fig.- 3 is removable only in part. Various forms'of devices, other than those disclosed or sug sted v herein, maybe devised` which fall Within the spirit of the invention as defined in the appende'dl claims.`
