Description

RISSUED PEB. 4, 1908 0. Jj. FABIAN. FLUSH TANK. APPLICATION FILED APR.24,19oel Y I |||m|.........
[Unrrnn sTATEs PATENT OFFICE,
OSCAR J'. FABIAN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
FLUSH-TANK.
Specification of Reissued Letters Patent.
Reissued Feb. 4, 1908.
Original NoE 808.441. dated December 26. 1905. Serial No. 245.589. Applicatiou'for reissue tiled April 24. 1906. Serial No. 313.520.
.To all w11 om it may concern:
Be it known that l, Oscfin J FABIAN, a citizen o'f the United Statesv residing in the city and countv of lhiladell'ihian State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and use- 'ul Flusl1-'l`anl\', which isd'ully set forth in the following speciiication and accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a tank and weightarontrolle l valve i'or use in connection with the howl ol' a closet; and the object is a tank in which water will not stand when the device is not in use, thereby avoiding the danger ol the apparatus being injured hy freezing of water therein. f
'lhe invention consists in an inner receptacle arranged within the liusll-lank. the water supply being discharged into the said inner receptacle, and the weightoithe receptacle and the water therein operates to close the' valve controlling the discharge orllush pipe.
Means are also provided whereby the inner receptacle is graduallyemptied into the flushtank and the valve 'then opened and th(` tank ein itied.
'llie device is designed to he used in connection with a howl or apparalus whereby water is. discharged into the receplacle only .when the saine is in use and the supyd): cut oil' when the device is not in use. As shown by nie, this is done by the lifting or lowering oi' the bowl-'cover but as the. manner olf starting and stopping the llou of )vater in the supplypipe is not a part of my invention and is not material I have not described the same.
My invention also consists in the novel features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, pointed out in the claims, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in whicl s Figure l isa perspective view ot my device, a portion of the sides of the tank being broken out. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the tank and cooperating parts, the supply-pipe. and lever being in elevation.
InI the drawings, A. represents the tank having a discharge-pipe B, which liushes a bowl B. A supply-pipe C extends upwardly into the tank A, and the upper end of the pipe C is curved-over and downwardly and discharges into a rece )tacle l), havmgm its sides a plurality of i' 'orations D', the agvregate cross-'sectional area of-wlnch 1s less t 1an that of the pipe C.` The receptacle D 1s susended by-mcans of a hook D2 ,to an end of a lever E, which is -pivotally carried intermel i i l 'B being. connected by valve F', which valve is provided at its lowery end with a conical enlargement F2, forming the valve proper and working in a plug G, carried by the bottom of' the tank A, the pipe any desirable form of union or coupling to the said plug. The. valve F', or, more accurately speaking, the enlargement of the valve seats upon a valve# seat lf", formed in the upper end 0l the plug Gr.
The operation of' the above-described deviceis as follows: The lever E, receptacle D, and valve F are normally in the `position shown by the dotted lines .in Fig. 2. No water can'therefore stand in the tank A. When the bowl B is in use, by raising a cover BfZ or by any other suitable means the supply-pipe C is opened, and water conveyed therethrough and discharges into the receptacle l). Some 'ol'Y this water will esca e through .the perforations D and from t e tank before the weight of water in the receptacle has eil'eeted the balance of the lever E and this water will dampen the sides of the bowl B. As the receptacle D iills the weigh-t ol" water therein will actuate the lever E and the enlargement o'l the valve F will bear on the seat F, and no water can then pass out of the tank A, rl'he water escaping' 'trom the receptacle D through the opening D or by overflow will be held in the tank A until the supply through the pipe C is out ofi' by dis'- continuance of the use of the bowl, as by falling of the cover B2 or in anyother desired manner, and as the water drains from the receptacle D the'valve F by its weight will drop into its normal position andthe water which has accumulated in the tank?v will escape through rthe pipe B and iush the bowl, the tank A being' entirely emptied. It for any reason the supply of Water 1s not cut on' in the pipe C, the tank A will be prevented from overiowing by reason of the tubular construction oi the valve F, the surplus passing out of the tank throughv the said valve, without its leaving its seat; y
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let` ters Patent, 'is:-
prising a fiush tank, a supply pipe,a discharg pi e, a pivoted lever, a )erturedgp'i ve suspended Yfrom sa 1. A device of the kind'descri'bed, com
side of its pivot, anda receptacle carriedby the level" and adapted to receive water from the supply and adapted to etuate the valve by reason of the weight of theweter, said receptaclevbeing perforated to permit the; escape of a portion of the water prior to! actuation ofthe valve.
'I' a portion ofthe contents of' the.reeeptucle prior to the closing of the vulve.
3. In a, device of the character described` a flushtank, a.n supply pipe, n lever suitably fulcrumed, 'a rising and falling perforated receptacle carried byseid lever und nornndly i and atell times receiving the end oi thesuply pipe and adapted to recehfef Water therei'i'om, an'outlet from said tank, end :rn openended pipe having u portion thereof' udupled to serve as u. vnlro for elosiingr said outlet.-
;saidpipe being mmneeted to suid. lever nud eeived within und discharging and having a. velve around its lower end adopted-to `control said outlet and to bev i ":nlamed/io control said outlet and to be4 seated by upward moven'ient, a lever to whielx the pipe is secured. :in :Lpertured re eeptnele' supported from suil lever, und n pipe 11a ving its discharge. end Vnornml'ly re'- Ad-out'mvurdly ,into seid receptacle.
li. In o. device of the linnn-.ter described, :t llusli tu nk having nn outlet therefrom7 e lever suite-.bly fulerumed, :L hollow vulve having :mopenng :in its upper portion udupted to eontrol said outlet und to be sented yby' up- `ward nnwement, :in upertured reeeptu-ele supported from seid level', und u supply pipe. lowing its discharge end norninlly received within :md adopted lto discharge. into `snid being seated by the upward movement ol'- the, (receptacle. v l l pipe. i Y k ()S(`v.f\l FABIAN. 4. In a device of the characterdescribed, n Witnesses: Y f i tank, an outlet leading from the' bottom f `thereof, a pipe apertured :it its upper portion 4 W. IL H'OOD, j RoBERT E. FABIAN.
