FENGE POST.
1 No. 10,471. Reissued Apr. 22, 1884.
` post; and it consists of a post formed of a singlel UNITED STATES l FANNIE S. SMITH, OF TOP ICA., KANSAS, ASSIGNOR, BY DIRECT'AND MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO H., TH MAS AND V. F. THOMAS, OF SAME PLACE, AND L, LAURENT, OF SHAVNEE COUNTY, KANSAS.
FENcsosT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Reissued Letters Pateit No. 10,471, dated April 22, 1884.
To all whom, if@ y concern.-
Be it known' that I, FANNIE S. SMITH, a vcitizen of the vUnited States, and a resident o f Topeka, in the county of YShawnee and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and usef I ful Improvements in Fence-Posts; and Ido, hereby declare th at the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it 1o appertains to make and use the same, reference being had `to the accompanying drawings, which form apart of this speciiication, and in whichi Figure 1 is a perspective view of my i1n proved fence-post.
the same; and Fig. 3 is a cross-'sectional View .onlinelmmliig 2. y y Similar letters of .reference indicate correspending parts in all the figures.A
v My invention has relation to ametallic fence- I metal strap or bar, bent at aboutthe middle (or at the point to form the top of the post,) and -idoubled, then yone part being given a quarterturn, 'and the two parts below the bend being brought in contact and fastened. securely together to form a strong standard or body for the post, and then separated below so as to form a broad base or support for the body of the post 3o and to enter the ground apart from each other and be braced or anchored by a horizontal connecting-piece, substantially as hereinafter set forth more in detail, and then succinctly stated in substance in my claims appended hereto.
In the accompanying drawings A`A represent a single piece of heavy bandiron, bent at about the middle of its length in such a manner that when the two parts Aa-nd A are brought together theyare at right angles to 4o each other, the upper part of the post being T-shaped, as will be clearly seen by reference to Fig. 3 of' the drawings. The part A has its lower end bent out atan angle' from the principal part A, and-is held in that position by a connecting-brace, B, -also made of bandiron. \This, brace serves to strengthen 'the lower part of the post, and has 'its ends 'bent' to i`1t\ around the parts A and A of the post,
.from post to post, fit.
Fig. 2 is a side view of Original No. 292,141, .dated January l5, 1884. Application for reissue tiled February 29, 1884.
and is held n position by meansowir'es() C, which pass through holes K, pierced throng the ends of the. brace and the endsrof the par A and A', and are then twisted arcuri he parts A A in the manner shown in tl" rawings. Y i A D D D represent notches or grooves on the oliter edgefof the principal part A of the post, into which the fence-wires F, which extend The part- A of 'the post is pierced with holes E E opposite each of the notches or grooves D, through which the ends 6ol of a piecel of wire, 1G, are passedthe holes being so placed that the ends of the'wire will pass-one on each `side of the part A-the ends of the wire crossing each other at the ,edge of the part-Annd being ,then twisted around-tho .nce-wire F, as elearlyshown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. 'The tying-wires G. thus serve to bind the. upper parts o`f the post ,firmly together, and also serve to hold the fence-wire The tying- 7o' in its position in the grooves D. wire which securesthe lower fence-wire passes through a hole in the part A, its ends `being secured around the fence-wire in the manner described. The wire II, passing throughholes I in the top ofthe post, serves to hold the parts I A A rmly together `at the point where they arfe ben-tor twisted, and also serves to hold the top fence-wire in position, as shown in the drawings. The ends of the' parts :A A are pointed or sharpened for convenience in i'n- 8o serting the post into the ground. y. The post is forced into the ground until the top rof the connccting-brace or anchor B is just either above or below the surface, asdesired. ,A v
From -the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction of my improved fence-post will readily be understood without, requirin extended explanation. It will be seeuthat my improved fence-post 9o is simple in constrhction, and, being made out of band or strap'rir'on, it can be sold atan extremely low priee, vth us forming a lcheap and serviceable post.
embodiment" hereinl shown, because some changes arepossible without departing from the substance of my invention.
. Having thus described my invention, I claimv and desire to secure by Letters Patentof the 5 United States- 1. A metallic fence-post consisting; of the Standard formed by the parts A and Ain one piece, disposed at right angles to each other, and having holes K E I, and notches D,v conlo. nectingbrace B, and wire-ties C GI'LEll--constructedand combined substantially fand for tlre purpose shown and described.
2. As an improved :u'ticle of nuumfncture, a metallic fence-post formed of u single ba@ o1L 15 strap bent at the pointconsituting the top et' the post and doubled, one part having a quarter-turn, and the two parts being in Contact Y and secured together to form the postbody,
but being separated below so thatthe two may enter the ground apart from each other, thus 2o forming a broad base for the post, the said.
two separated lower parts being tied or stayed' by a horzontal'brace, all substantially as set forth.
As witness my hand this 2d (lay of Vliebru- 25 FANNIE S. SMITH,
Wtnesseg R. A. HENBERSON, EDWARD Crimson.
