MACHINE FOR SEPARATING MIDDLINGS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Reissued Letters Patent No. 10,059, dated March 7, 1882. Original No. 108,926, dated November 1,1870. Reissue No.4,827, dated March 2G, 1872. Applicationfor reissue filed August 2, 1881.
DIVISION B.
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAMR. MIDDLETON, formerly ot Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State ot' Ohio, now of Commonwealth,
in the county of Marinette and State of Wiscousin, have invented certain new vand useful Improvements in Machines for SeparatingMiddlings, ofwhich the following` is a specilication, reference being had to the accompanying draw- Io ings.
Thisinvention relates to a machine for cleansing middlings and preparing the same for regrinding by separating therefrom the fine lour, the fine pulverulent impurities or specks, and
the coarse bran.
The olijectot' this invention is to so construct the machine as to enable it to effect these separations thoroughly and expeditiously; and my invent-ion consists of the several combinations zo of elements which will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings,Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved middlings-separator. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section z5 thereof'. Fig.3is atop plan view thereof. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section in line .r Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is an end view; and Fig. 6 is a vertical cross-section in line y y, Fig. 2.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts 3o in the several ligures.
In the construction of Iny improved separator for middlings the frame A, Fig. 1, and the chest for inclcsing the reel and sieve may Ibe of any suitable form, as is well known.
C represents the dusting-reel, arranged in the upper part of the frame in a slightly inclined position and rotated in the usual Way.
D represents a screw-eonveyer, arranged in a suitable hopper or trough underneath the 4o reel C, for the reception of the ne iiour which is silted through the reel. The conveyer moves the ne iiour toward the head of the reel in trunk E, and having its eye connecled there- 5o with by a spout,f.
G represents the shaking-screen, a1 ranged in the lower part of the frame, and projecting with its head portion into the lower part of' the air-trunk E underneath the tail ot the reel C, so that the material which is discharged over the tail of the reel falls through the air-trunk E and upon the head portion of the sha-kingscreen Gr. The latter is but slightly inclined from its head toward its tail, and has a large 6o area, so as to spread the middlings very thin while being sit'ted. f
H is a hopper or trough, arranged underneath the sieve Gr for the reception of the' sifted middlings, and I is a screw-conveyer, arranged in' the hopper or trough H, for collecting and remingling the middlings which are sifted through the boltfronrits head toward its tail, and conveying the same to a-suitable opening, with which the conveyer-trough is vo provided, and through which the sifted middlings are discharged. rIhe sieve G is suspended by four long slender springs, K, which allow the sieve to move freely, and which are secured with their upper ends tothe frame A and with their lower ends to the side pieces of the sieve-frame in a perpendicular position, so as to stand-at an angle to the surface of the sieve, whereby a rising-aml-falling motion is imparted to the sieve.
L represents a projecting guide or`ear secured to each side ot' the sieve, and provided with a hole, through which passes loosely a pin or rod, m, which is secured to a short post, M, fastened t0 the base-piece of the frame A. 85
n, is a coiled spring, arranged on the pin m between the post M and the guide L. 0 represents a cam-wheel provided with one or more projecting cams, and secured to a horizontal 'shat`t,19, opposite the tail endof the sieve. 9o
gis a projection secured to the tail-piece ol' the sieve-frame, and adapted tofengage in the notches of the cam-wheel.
The sieve is set in motion by the revolution of the cam-wheel, and at every notch in the latter the springs -n push the sieve back suddenly with a sharp stroke upon the cam-wheel. This jarring stroke is similar to'that of a hamwhich they are discharged. The middlings as A they come from the doar-bolts are fed into the head of the dusting-reel (l, and first freed by the action of this reel from the tine tlo'ur, and then delivered into the trunk E,in which they are subjected to the action of the ascending air-current, which separates the lighter particles ot' bran from the heavier granules ot' middlings and the. larger pieces ot' bran. The middlingsthen pass upon the. shakingsieve, where the ner adhering impurities` are detached from the middlings by the peculiar jarring motion of the sieve, while the cleansed middlings pass through the sieve and into the hopper H, in which they are remingled, and from which they are removed to be reground. The fan produces an outward current of air whereby `the lighter particles of bran which doat about are carried oi'.
I claim as my invention- 1. 1n a middlings-separator, the combination .herein described' of a shaking-sieve, whereby the middlings are sifted, a fan for causing an air-current, and a reel for separating the tiner our from the middlings before the latter reach the air-current and sieve.
2. In amiddlings-separator, the combination of a sh akin gscreen, a hopper arranged lengthwise underneath the screen,in which the siftcd middlings are received, a conveyer arranged lengthwise in the hopper, whereby the sifted middlin gs are collected and removed, asuctoufan, whereby the oating impurities are drawn oft, and apreliminary dusting-bolt, whereby the Hour is separated from the middlings previous to subjecting the middlings to the action of the aircurrent and the sh akin g-sieve, substantiall y as set forth.
3. The combination, with a dustingrcel, whereby the Hour is separated from the middlin gs, of a hopper arranged lengthwise underneath the reel7 in which the flour is received, a conveycr arranged lengthwise in the hopper, whereby the iour is removed, a shaking-sieve which receives the middlings from the dusting-reel, a hopper arranged lengthwise un derneath the shaker, in which the middlings are received, andra conveyer arranged lengthwise in this hopper, whereby the sifted middlings are collected and removed, substantially as setforth., t
4. The combination, with a dustingreel, whereby the flour is separated from the iniddlings, and a shaking-sieve by which the middlings are separated from the offal, of a suction-fan, and an air-trunk connected with the eye of the fan, through which an ascending aircurrent is drawn tothe fan, and through which the middlings pass from the dusting-reel to the shaking-screen, substantially as set forth.
