Abstract
The new variety of plum tree ‘Suplum62’ is characterized by having fruit that is medium sized for a mid-season plum, with yellow skin, firm yellow flesh, a very sweet flavor and a stone that is adherent to the flesh.
Description
Latin name of the genus and species claimed: Prunus salicina.
Variety denomination: ‘SUPLUM62’.
This application relates to the discovery and asexual propagation of a new and distinct variety of plum tree, Prunus salicina ‘Suplum62’. The new variety was first originated by hybridization near Wasco, Kern County, Calif. and identified in September 2015 by Terry A. Bacon and Terrence J. Frett as breeder number ‘PL1766YY’.
The seed parent is ‘PL880YY’ (unpatented breeding selection), and the pollen parent is unknown (a bulk pollen of unpatented breeding program selections). The parent varieties were first crossed in March 2011, the date of first sowing being March 2012 and the date of first flowering being March 2015. The new plum variety ‘Suplum62’ was first asexually propagated by Terry A. Bacon and Terrence J. Frett near Wasco, Kern County, Calif. in February 2016 by dormant grafting.
The new variety ‘Suplum62’ is characterized by having fruit that is medium sized for a mid-season plum, with yellow skin, firm yellow flesh, fruit shape that is oblong with pointed apex, and a very sweet flavor.
The new variety ‘Suplum62’ resembles its seed parent ‘PL880YY’ (unpatented breeding selection) in that both have fruit with yellow skin and yellow flesh. However, ripening time starts 24 days earlier for the new variety ‘Suplum62’, and the new variety has a smaller fruit size at 92 g compared to 160 g for ‘PL880YY’. Further, the new variety has a fruit shape that is oblong with pointed apex, compared to rounded with flat apex for ‘PL880YY’
The new variety ‘Suplum62’ has yellow skin and flesh like ‘Flavor Queen’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 7,420) but the new variety has a fruit shape that is oblong with pointed apex, compared to rounded with flat apex for ‘Flavor Queen’, and fruit weight is 92 g for the new variety compared to 140 g for ‘Flavor Queen’. The new variety ‘Suplum62’ ripens within six days of ‘Owen T’ (unpatented) and has yellow flesh like ‘Owen T’, but the new variety has yellow skin compared to the black skin of ‘Owen T’. Further, the new variety has smaller fruit size, at 92 g compared to 170 g for ‘Owen T’, and a fruit shape that is oblong with pointed apex compared to rounded with flat apex for ‘Owen T’.
Additionally, the fruit of the new variety ‘Suplum62’ has a yellow skin color compared to the reddish-black skin color of ‘Suplumeleven’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 4,902) and black skin color of ‘Suplumfifty’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 27,327). Further, the new variety ‘Suplum62’ has a smaller fruit size at 92 g than ‘Suplumeleven’ and ‘Suplumfifty’ at 145 g and 195 g for the other varieties, respectively.
The new variety ‘Suplum62’ has been shown to maintain its distinguishing characteristics through successive asexual propagations by, for example, cuttings and grafting.
The accompanying color photographic illustration, FIG. 1 , shows typical specimens of the foliage and fruit of the plum variety ‘Suplum62’. The illustration shows the upper and lower surfaces of the leaves and exterior and sectional views of the fruit. The photographic illustration was taken shortly after the fruit was picked and the colors are as nearly true as is reasonably possible in a color representation of this type.
Throughout this specification, color names beginning with a small letter signify that the name of that color as used in common speech is aptly descriptive. Color names beginning with a capital letter designate values based upon The R.H.S. Colour Chart published by The Royal Horticultural Society, London, England, 1986.
The descriptive matter which follows pertains to three-year-old ‘Suplum62’ trees grown in the vicinity of Wasco, Kern County, Calif. during 2021 and is believed to apply to plants of the variety grown under similar conditions of soil and climate elsewhere.
