Abstract

A new and distinct variety of plum tree, Prunus salicina, cv. ‘Suplum59’, is characterized by having fruit that is very large, with reddish-black skin and yellow flesh that ripens late in the season. The fruit of the new variety ‘Suplum59’ also has firm flesh, a very sweet flavor and a stone that is adherent to the flesh.

Description

Latin name of the genus and species claimed: Prunus salicina.
Variety denomination: ‘SUPLUM59’.
BACKGROUND AND SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
This application relates to the discovery and asexual propagation of a new and distinct variety of plum tree, Prunus salicina cv. ‘Suplum59’. The new variety was first originated by hybridization and identified in September 2016 by Terry A. Bacon and Terrence J. Frett as breeder number ‘PL2014YB’.
The seed parent is ‘PL968RB’ (unpatented breeding selection), and the pollen parent is unknown (from a bulk pollen of unpatented breeding program selections). The parent varieties were first crossed in March 2013, the date of first sowing being March 2014 and the date of first flowering being March 2016. The new plum variety ‘Suplum59’ was first asexually propagated by Terry A. Bacon and Terrence J. Frett near Wasco, Kern County, Calif. in February 2017 by dormant grafting.
The new variety ‘Suplum59’ is characterized by having fruit that is very large, with reddish-black skin and yellow flesh that ripens late in the season. The fruit of the new variety ‘Suplum59’ also has firm flesh, a very sweet flavor and a stone that is adherent to the flesh.
The new variety ‘Suplum59’ resembles its seed parent ‘PL968RB’ (unpatented breeding selection) in that both have fruit with reddish-black skin. However, the fruit of the new variety ‘Suplum59’ has yellow flesh compared to red flesh for ‘PL968RB’ and begins ripening about 48 days later than the fruit of ‘PL968RB’. Further, the fruit of the new variety ‘Suplum59’ has a higher brix at 22% compared to about 20% for ‘PL698RB’.
The new variety ‘Suplum59’ has black skin and yellow flesh like ‘Suplumsix’ (Plant Pat. No. 2,747), ‘Suplumthirtysix’ (Plant Pat. No. 19,023) and ‘Owen-T’ (unpatented) but the fruit of the new variety ‘Suplum59’ begins ripening about 3 days later than the fruit of ‘Suplumsix’, 11 days later than ‘Suplumthirtysix’ and 61 days later ‘Owen-T’. Further, the fruit of the new variety ‘Suplum59’ has a larger size at about 150 g compared to fruit of about 124 g for ‘Suplumsix’ and a smaller size compared to the fruit of ‘Suplumthirtysix’, about 195 g and the fruit of ‘Owen-T’, about 170 g. The fruit of the new variety has a higher brix at 22% compared to 18% for ‘Suplumsix’, 19% for ‘Suplumthirtysix’ and 16% for ‘Owen-T’.
The fruit of the new variety ‘Suplum59’ has reddish-black skin like ‘Suplumfifty’ (Plant Pat. No. 27,327), but it has yellow flesh, unlike the red flesh of the fruit of ‘Suplumfifty’. The fruit of the new variety ‘Suplum59’ begins ripening about 27 days later than ‘Suplumfifty’, and it has higher brix at 22% compared to 20% for ‘Suplumfifty’.
The new variety ‘Suplum59’ has been shown to maintain its distinguishing characteristics through successive asexual propagations by, for example, cuttings and grafting.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPH
The accompanying color photographic illustration shows typical specimens of the foliage and fruit of the peach variety ‘Suplum59’. The illustration shows the upper and lower surfaces of the leaves and exterior and sectional views of the fruit. The photographic illustration was taken shortly after the fruit was picked and the colors are as nearly true as is reasonably possible in a color representation of this type.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION
Throughout this specification, color names beginning with a small letter signify that the name of that color as used in common speech is aptly descriptive. Color names beginning with a capital letter designate values based upon The R.H.S. Colour Chart published by The Royal Horticultural Society, London, England, 1986.
The descriptive matter which follows pertains to three-year-old ‘Suplum59’ plants grown in the vicinity of Wasco, Kern County, Calif. during 2020 and is believed to apply to plants of the variety grown under similar conditions of soil and climate elsewhere.
