A new day-neutral strawberry plant named ‘A13-71’ is disclosed, with exceptional yield and flavor characteristics.

Description

Genus and species: Fragaria x ananassa Duch.
Variety denomination: ‘A13-71’.
STATEMENT REGARDING FEDERALLY SPONSORED RESEARCH OR DEVELOPMENT

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
‘A13-71’ is a product of a breeding program carried out by the inventor in the Andalucia region of Spain. ‘A13-71’ was one of several seedlings resulting from an uncontrolled cross made in the year 2013. The seeds resulting from the uncontrolled cross with unknown parents were germinated indoors and the resulting seedling was transplanted to the trial seedling field. ‘A13-71’ was selected in the Andalucia region of Spain in the year 2014 based on observations of its fruiting characteristics. In 2015, ‘A13-71’ was asexually propagated by rooting stolons and was expanded to 30 plants which were planted in replicated trials in the Andalucia region of Spain. The plants were observed and evaluated, and the next year they were expanded for further observation and evaluation. The breeders of ‘A13-71’ have sold the variety commercially under the Trademark name Cleopatra WB or Cleopatra Circle R Brand. Contrast is made with the ‘San Andreas’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 19,97) in reference to the shape of the fruit; ‘A13-71’ presents an ovoid and globose shape while ‘San Andreas’ presents a conical shape. The color of the leaves of the ‘San Andreas’ variety is dark green while ‘A13-71’ variety has medium green leaves. The achenes of the fruit of ‘San Andreas’ are below the surface while those of ‘A13-71’ are at the same height as the surface. Comparison is made with strawberry variety ‘BG-4316’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 23,255) known commercially in Europe as ‘Victory’. The plants of ‘A13-71’ variety produce a yield of 670.52 g per plant while ‘BG-4316’ presents a higher yield of 810.66 g per plant. The fruit of ‘A13-71’ has a firmness of 400 in the penetrometer while ‘BG-4316’ variety has a greater firmness of 414 in the penetrometer. The fruit of ‘A13-71’ has a lower brix of 7.3 than ‘BG-4316’ which contains a brix of 7.6. The fruit of ‘A13-71’ is partially remontant allowing the variety to have a production with greater precocity than other varieties allowing the commercial use in different markets. ‘A13-71’ is commercialized primarily in the fresh fruit market and secondarily in the frozen fruit market. Throughout several generations of asexual propagation, ‘A13-71’ has been observed to retain its distinctive characteristics and remain true to type.

DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION
The following description is that of a plant age of seven months and is based on observations made during the 2016 and 2017 growing seasons in the Andalucia region of Spain. It should be understood that the characteristics described will vary somewhat depending upon cultural practices and climatic conditions and can vary with location and season. Quantified measurements are expressed as an average of measurements taken from a number of individual plants of the new variety. The measurements of any individual plant or any group of plants, of the new variety may vary from the stated average. Color terminology follows The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, London (R.H.S.) (Sixth Revised Edition, 2015).
  • General description:

      • Blooming period.—Approximately January through May in Huelva, Spain.

      • Cold hardiness.—Not tested in areas where temperatures of 32° F. occur.
