Abstract
A new and distinct Dianthus cultivar named ‘PG-072’ is disclosed, characterized by dark pink double flowers, prolific flowering and a cascading, compact habit. The new variety is a Dianthus, typically produced as a garden or container plant.
Description
Latin name of the genus and species: Dianthus caryophyllus.
Variety denomination: ‘PG-072’.
The new cultivar is a product of planned breeding program by the inventor, Ilan Breier. The objective was to create new varieties of Dianthus for hanging baskets. The crossing resulting in this new variety was made during 2012 at a commercial nursery in Bnei Zion, Israel. ‘PG-072’ was discovered and selected in 2014 by the inventor at the same nursery in Bnei Zion, Israel.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar ‘PG-072’ was first performed in Bnei Zion, Israel by vegetative terminal cuttings in 2014. ‘PG-072’ has since produced several generations and has shown that the unique features of this cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type.
The cultivar ‘PG-072’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, day length, and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘PG-072’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘PG-072’ as a new and distinct Dianthus cultivar:

- 2. Unique cascading growth habit, suitable for hanging baskets.

Plants of the new cultivar ‘PG-072’ are comparable to the seed parent, Dianthus ‘PE-58’, unpatented, in most horticultural characteristics; however, the new variety ‘PG-072’ differs in the following:

The accompanying photograph in FIG. 1 illustrates in full color a typical plant of ‘PG-072’ grown outdoors in Bnei Zion, Israel. This plant is approximately 20 weeks old, shown in an 8-inch pot.
The photographs were taken using conventional techniques and although colors may appear different from actual colors due to light reflectance it is as accurate as possible by conventional photographic techniques.
In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Colour Chart, 2015, except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used. The following observations and measurements describe ‘PG-072’ plants in a commercial greenhouse in Bnei Zion, Israel. Temperatures ranged from 10° C. to 29° C. night and day. No artificial light, photoperiodic treatments or chemical treatments were given to the plants. Natural light conditions were approximately 2500 to 4000 fc of light. Measurements and numerical values represent averages of typical plant types.

- Time to produce a rooted cutting: About 18 days at 24° C.
- Root description: Fibrous roots, approximately 1 to 3 mm in diameter, colored near RHS Orange-White 159C.

- Pot size: 18 cm circular container.
