Abstract
A new and distinct Erysimum cultivar named ‘DERSUSGBP’ is disclosed, characterized by abundant flowers occurring on an upright, vigorous plant. Plants do not require vernalization to flower. Flowers are pleasantly scented and begin orange in color, changing to lavender. The new variety is an Erysimum, normally produced as an outdoor garden or container plant.
Description
Latin name of the genus and species: Erysimum linifolium.
Variety denomination: ‘DERSUSGBP’.
The new Erysimum cultivar is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the inventor, Gavriel Danziger in Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, Israel. The objective of the breeding program was to produce new Erysimum varieties. The open-pollination resulting in this new variety was made during January of 2013.
The seed parent is the, unpatented, propriety variety referred to as Erysimum ‘ER-12-2’. The pollen parent is unknown, as it was an open-pollination breeding program. The new variety was discovered in October 2014 by the inventor in a group of seedlings resulting from the crossing, in a greenhouse in Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, Israel. Date of first sale was Aug. 3, 2018, occurring in the United States. This sale was made directly by the inventor or one who obtained the claimed invention directly or indirectly from the inventor. This sale and all public disclosures made between Aug. 3, 2018 and the filing of this application fall within the exception allowed under 102(b)(1).
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar ‘DERSUSGBP’ first by vegetative cuttings was first performed during November 2014, at a greenhouse in Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, Israel. Subsequent propagation by vegetative cuttings has shown that the unique features of this cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type in multiple successive generations.
The cultivar ‘DERSUSGBP’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, day length, and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘DERSUSGBP’ These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘DERSUSGBP’ as a new and distinct Erysimum cultivar:
-
- 1. Flowers without vernalization.
- 2. Nice scent.
- 3. Abundant flowering.
- 4. Upright vigorous plant.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘DERSUSGBP’ are similar to plants of the seed parent in most horticultural characteristics, however, plants of the new cultivar ‘DERSUSGBP’ differ in the following;
-
- 1. ‘DERSUSGBP’ has larger flowers than ‘ER-12-2’.
- 2. ‘DERSUSGBP’ has orange flowers when opening and which change to purple flowers, while ‘ER-12-2’ has light purple flowers.
- 3. ‘DERSUSGBP’ has a more upright and tall habit, while ‘ER-12-2’ is more mounded and compact.
- 4. ‘DERSUSGBP’ has nicer fragrance than ‘ER-12-2’.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘DERSUSGBP’ can be compared to the unpatented commercial variety Erysimum ‘Super Bowl Mauve’. These varieties are similar in most horticultural characteristics; however, ‘DERSUSGBP’ differs in the following:
-
- 1. ‘DERSUSGBP’ flowers very early and with no vernalization compared with ‘Super Bowl Mauve’ which requires vernalization.
- 2. ‘DERSUSGBP’ has a longer inflorescence than ‘Super Bowl Mauve’.
- 3. ‘DERSUSGBP’ has darker purple flowers when fully opened than ‘Super Bowl Mauve’.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘DERSUSGBP’ can also be compared to the unpatented commercial variety Erysimum ‘Poem Lavender’. These varieties are similar in most horticultural characteristics; however, ‘DERSUSGBP’ differs in the following:
-
- 1. ‘DERSUSGBP’ has larger flowers than ‘Poem Lavender’.
- 2. ‘DERSUSGBP’ flowers very early and with no vernalization compared with ‘Poem Lavender’ which requires vernalization.
The accompanying photograph in FIG. 1 illustrates in full color a typical plant of ‘DERSUSGBP’ grown in in a greenhouse, in Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, Israel.
The photographs were taken using conventional techniques and although colors may appear different from actual colors due to light reflectance it is as accurate as possible by conventional photographic techniques.
In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Mini Colour Chart 2005 except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used. The following observations and measurements describe ‘DERSUSGBP’ plants grown in a nursery in Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, Israel, under natural lighting. Measurements were taken during April 2019. The plants were approximately 2 to 3 months old in a 25 cm pot. The growing temperature ranged from 18° C. to 28° C. during the days, 13° C. to 18° C. during the nights. Measurements and numerical values represent averages of typical plant types.
