Abstract
‘Sheegene 101’ is a new grapevine plant with novel characteristics that include good fertility and naturally loose bunches. The berries produced by ‘Sheegene 101’ are black and seedless with a crisp texture and no detectable seed traces. The berries produced by ‘Sheegene 101’ are large, weighing 7-8 g/berry on average, and are harvested in late August.
Description
Latin name of the genus and species of the plant claimed: Vitis vinifera.
Cultivar denomination: ‘Sheegene 101’.
The present invention relates to a new distinct variety of seedless grapevine named ‘Sheegene 101’. The variety originated from a hybridization performed in Mildura, Victoria, Australia during 2002 between ‘Crimson Seedless’ (unpatented), as the pollen parent, and ‘Autumn Royal’ (unpatented), as the seed parent. Abortive seed traces were embryo cultured and the resulting plant was planted in an evaluation block during 2004. The first evaluation of the fruit produced by ‘Sheegene 101’ was performed during 2007. ‘Sheegene 101’ was first asexually propagated by field grafting dormant hardwood scions to rootstock in 2010 in Irymple, Victoria, Australia. Fruit from the resulting four grafted ‘Sheegene 101’ vines was first harvested in 2012. All characteristics and distinctions remain true to form and are established and transmitted through succeeding propagations.
The following are the most outstanding and distinguishing characteristics of ‘Sheegene 101’. ‘Sheegene 101’ produces large, black (5RP 3/2), seedless berries that are harvested in late August and weigh on average 7-8 g/berry.
‘Sheegene 101’ can be distinguished from its male parent, ‘Crimson Seedless’, based at least upon berry color and weight and cluster weight. ‘Sheegene 101’ produces black berries; whereas, ‘Crimson Seedless’ produces red berries (2.5R 5/10). The weight of the berries produced by ‘Sheegene 101’ (7.7 g/berry on average) is greater than those of ‘Crimson Seedless’ (4.0 g/berry on average).
‘Sheegene 101’ can be distinguished from its female parent, ‘Autumn Royal’, based at least upon vigor, berry shape and attachment, rudimentary seeds per berry, bunch size, and fertility. ‘Sheegene 101’ displays a medium to high vigor; whereas; ‘Autumn Royal’ displays medium to low vigor. ‘Sheegene 101’ berries exhibit a datiform shape; whereas, ‘Autumn Royal’ berries exhibit an ovoid to ellipsoidal shape. The berries of ‘Sheegene 101’ are more strongly attached than those of ‘Autumn Royal’. The berries of ‘Autumn Royal’ also exhibit 2-4 detectable rudimentary (aborted) seeds that each weigh about 7.2 mg. Any rudimentary seeds within the berries of ‘Sheegene 101’ are undetectable. The berry bunches produced by ‘Sheegene 101’ are smaller than those of ‘Autumn Royal’. ‘Sheegene 101’ displays higher fertility than ‘Autumn Royal’. The berries of ‘Sheegene 101’, however, exhibit the same crispy texture as those of ‘Autumn Royal’.
‘Sheegene 101’ is harvested in August, which is earlier than the late September to early November harvest period of both ‘Crimson Seedless’ and ‘Autumn Royal’.
‘Sheegene 101’ is illustrated by the accompanying photograph, which shows the form, foliage, and fruit of a 4-year-old vine grown in the field at Murcia, Spain. The colors shown are as true as can be reasonably obtained by conventional photographic procedures.
The following detailed description sets forth the distinctive characteristics of ‘Sheegene 101’. The detailed description was obtained between March and November using 4-year-old plants grown in the field at Murcia, Spain. The color references are to the Munsell Plant Tissue Color Book, 2012 Edition by Munsell Color.
