Abstract
A new and distinct cultivar of Leucanthemum plant named ‘White Magic’, characterized by its semi-double type, pure white-colored inflorescences, medium green-colored foliage, moderately vigorous, upright growth habit, is disclosed.
Description
Latin name of genus and species of plant claimed: Leucanthemum x superbum.
Variety denomination: ‘White Magic’.
The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Leucanthemum plant botanically known as Leucanthemum x superbum and hereinafter referred to by the cultivar name ‘White Magic’.
The new cultivar originated in a controlled breeding program in Arroyo Grande, Calif. during September 2011. The objective of the breeding program was the development of Leucanthemum cultivars having a long blooming season that doesn't require deadheading to rebloom.
The new Leucanthemum cultivar is the result of open-pollination. The female (seed) parent of the new cultivar is ‘Crazy Daisy’, not patented, characterized by its semi-to fully double-type, pure white-colored flowers with ray florets having fringed margins, medium green-colored foliage, and vigorous, upright growth habit. The male (pollen) parent of the new cultivar is unknown. The new cultivar was discovered and selected as a single flowering plant within the progeny of the above stated open-pollination during October 2012 in a controlled environment in Arroyo Grande, Calif.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar by terminal stem cuttings since October 2012 in Arroyo Grande, Calif. and Elburn, Ill. has demonstrated that the new cultivar reproduces true to type with all of the characteristics, as herein described, firmly fixed and retained through successive generations of such asexual propagation.
The following characteristics of the new cultivar have been repeatedly observed and can be used to distinguish ‘White Magic’ as a new and distinct cultivar of Leucanthemum plant:

- 1. Semi-double type, pure white-colored inflorescences;
- 2. Medium green-colored foliage; and
- 3. Moderately vigorous, upright growth habit.
Plants of the new cultivar differ from plants of the female parent primarily in having larger diameter inflorescences and ray florets without frilled margins.
Of the many commercially available Leucanthemum cultivars, the most similar in comparison to the new cultivar is the Leucanthemum cultivar ‘Becky’, not patented. However, in side by side comparisons, plants of the new cultivar differ from plants of ‘Becky’ in at least the following characteristics:

- 1. Plants of the new cultivar have larger diameter inflorescences than plants of ‘Becky’; and
- 2. Plants of the new cultivar are shorter than plants of ‘Becky’.
In addition the new cultivar can be compared to REALFLOR ‘Real Neat’, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 26,185. In comparison plants of the new cultivar differ from plants of ‘Real Neat’ in at least the following characteristics:

- 1. Plants of the new cultivar have a ray floret shape different from plants of ‘Real Neat’;
- 2. Plants of the new cultivar have larger diameter inflorescences than plants of ‘Real Neat’; and
- 3. Plants of the new cultivar have longer and wider ray florets than plants of ‘Real Neat’.
The accompanying photographs show, as nearly true as it is reasonably possible to make the same in color illustrations of this type, typical flower and foliage characteristics of the new cultivar. Colors in the photographs differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed description, which accurately describes the colors of ‘White Magic’. The plants were approximately 16-weeks old and grown in Elburn, Ill. in one-gallon containers for approximately 4 weeks in a greenhouse and 6 weeks outdoors.
The new cultivar has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions to date. Accordingly, it is possible that the phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in the environment, such as temperature, light intensity, and day length, without, however, any variance in genotype.
The chart used in the identification of colors described herein is The R.H.S. Colour Chart of The Royal Horticultural Society, London, England, 2015 edition, except where general color terms of ordinary significance are used. The color values were determined in July 2017 under natural light conditions in West Chicago, Ill.
The following descriptions and measurements describe approximately 18-week old plants produced from cuttings and grown in a glass-covered greenhouse under conditions comparable to those used in commercial practice. The plants were grown in Elburn, Ill. in one-gallon containers in a glass-covered greenhouse for approximately 4 weeks and then outside for approximately 8 weeks. Greenhouse temperatures were maintained at approximately 60° F. to 65° F. (15.5° C. to 18.3° C.) during the day and approximately 55° F. to 60° F. (12.7° C. to 15.5° C.) during the night. No supplemental lighting was provided. Measurements and numerical values represent averages of typical plants.
