Description

1964 w. E. DUFFETT Piani Pat 29433 CHRYSANTHEMUM PLANT Filed 001;. 4, 1963 f/vvE/v TOR.
United States Patent l Plant Pat. 2,438 Ice Patented Aug. 18, 1964" My present invention comprises a new and distinct variety of chrysanthemum plant which is a sport of the variety disclosed in US. Plant Patent No. 2,005.
The parent variety, U.S. Plant Patent No. 2,005, was developed as a result of a program of hybridization and cross breeding carried on in the vicinity of Niles, Michigan, said program producing a large number of chrysanthemum plants having very desirable characteristics, and when grown in production in the vicinity of Barberton, Ohio, has resulted in a number of sports, from the several parent varieties, this instant sport of my discovery being of substantial value and an improvement over the parent as well as being a substantial improvement over other known varieties of the same general hybridization and cross breeding program.
The primary difference between the instant variety and the parent variety, resides in the color thereof since the flower size, shape, form and flowering dates are very nearly the same or at least substantially so.
The novelty residing in the color largely, it is notable that the color as such is a brilliant to vivid yellow in general tonality and the blooms are described as they appear with relation to the disclosure of colors in the Nickerson Color Fan published by the Munsell Color Company. As grown in the vicinity of Barberton, Ohio, under uniform culture, plants of my new variety produce large size blooms on long strong stems, very early and continuously, the improvement of the qualities of the plant for the purposes of cut flowers being substantial.
My new variety may be compared to other varieties found during the same course of hybridization and particularly the variety of Plant Patent No. 2,274 is related thereto, and for comparison the plant of my new variety is taller and makes a more desirable cut garden chrysanthemum than the said chrysanthemum of Plant Patent No. 2,274.
Under conditions of culture previously mentioned which were undertaken in the vicinity of Barberton, Ohio, my new variety blooms from early September and substantially continuously to a killing frost. The buds of my new variety are large and are only affected by a continuous period of wet weather, and hot weather is found to delay flowering somewhat.
The blooms of my new variety are large and when fully expanded reach a diameter of approximately 6 inches, the
stems being on the order of 34 inches and making a plantof that general size.
My new variety has been asexually reproduced by stem cuttings in the vicinity of Barberton, Ohio, and my new variety has been found to retain its distinctive character istics through successive asexual reproduction.
The accompanying drawing forming a part hereof shows a typical bloom of my new variety of chrysanthemum.
The following is a detailed description of my new variety of chrysanthemum plant, the color references being to the Nickerson Color Fan published by the Munsell Color Company:
