Abstract

A new cultivar of hybrid Anemone named ‘PKAN’, characterized by its flowers that are upward facing, cup-shaped, and medium to deep pink in color, its numerous basal branches, and its dwarf plant habit.

Description

Botanical classification: Anemone×hybrida.
Cultivar designation: ‘PKAN’.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Anemone×hybrida known as ‘PKAN’ and is hereinafter referred to by the cultivar name ‘PKAN’.
The new cultivar, ‘PKAN’, arose as a naturally occurring chimeral mutation of ‘Chabo’ (not patented). The Inventor discovered ‘PKAN’ in 2003 in a container at his nursery in Gero-she, Gifu, Japan.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar was first accomplished by the Inventor by root cuttings in Gero-she, Gifu, Japan in 2005. Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar has shown that the unique features are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and represent the characteristics of the new cultivar. These attributes in combination distinguish ‘PKAN’ as a new and unique cultivar of Anemone.
    • 1. ‘PKAN’ exhibits flowers that are upward facing and cup-shaped.
    • 2. ‘PKAN’ exhibits flowers that are medium to deep pink in color.
    • 3. ‘PKAN’ exhibits numerous basal branches.
    • 4. ‘PKAN’ exhibits a dwarf plant habit.
‘PKAN’ can be most closely be compared to its parent plant, ‘Chabo’. ‘PKAN’ differs from ‘Chabo’ in having flowers that are darker pink in color and upright facing versus outward facing, in having more basal branching, and in having a more dwarf plant habit (‘Chabo’ reaches about 1 m in height).
‘PKAN’ can also be compared to the cultivars ‘Pretty Lady Diana’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 22,332) and ‘Whirlwind’ (not patented). ‘Pretty Lady Diana’ differs from ‘PKAN’ in being taller in height (about 50 cm) and ‘Whirlwind’ differs from ‘PKAN’ in being much taller in height (about 90 cm) and in having flowers that are about half the size and white in color.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING
The accompanying colored photographs illustrate the overall appearance and distinct characteristics of the new Anemone. The photographs were taken of a plant about one year in age as grown in a 15-cm container in The Netherlands.
The photograph in FIG. 1 provides a side view of a typical plant habit of ‘PKAN’ in bloom.
The photograph in FIG. 2 provides a close-up view of the flowers of ‘PKAN’.
The photograph in FIG. 3 provides a close-up view of a leaf of ‘PKAN’.
The colors in the photographs are as close as possible with the photographic and printing technology utilized. The color values cited in the detailed botanical description accurately describe the colors of the new Anemone.
DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE PLANT
The following is a detailed description of one year-old plants of the new cultivar as grown in 15-cm containers outdoors in The Netherlands. Plants were grown under average day temperatures of 14° to 28° C. and average night temperatures of 6° to 16° C. The phenotype of the new cultivar may vary with variations in environmental, climatic, and cultural conditions, as it has not been tested under all possible environmental conditions. The color determination is in accordance with The 2007 R.H.S. Colour Chart of The Royal Horticultural Society, London, England, except where general color terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used.
