Abstract
A new cultivar of hybrid Salvia, ‘ALKLF’, that is characterized by its dwarf plant habit, its numerous racemes of blue-violet flowers, its sterility, and its abundance of shoots produced after one pinch.
Description
Botanical classification: Salvia nemorosa.
Variety denomination: ‘ALKLF’.
The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Salvia nemorosa and will be referred to hereafter by its cultivar name, ‘ALKLF’. ‘ALKLF’ is an herbaceous perennial grown for landscape use.
The Inventor discovered ‘ALKLF’ in 2013 in a production field planted with 6,000 plants of Salvia nemerosa ‘Ostfriesland’ (not patented) derived from vegetative propagation in Lisse, The Netherlands. ‘ALKLF’ therefore derived as a naturally occurring chimeral mutation of ‘Ostfriesland’.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar was first accomplished by the Inventor by vegetative stem cuttings in 2013 in Lisse, The Netherlands. The characteristics of this cultivar have been determined to be stable and are reproduced true to type in successive generations.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and represent the characteristics of the new cultivar. These attributes in combination distinguish ‘ALKLF’ as a unique cultivar of Salvia.

- 1. ‘ALKLF’ exhibits a dwarf plant habit.
- 2. ‘ALKLF’ exhibits numerous racemes of blue-violet flowers.
- 3. ‘ALKLF’ exhibits many shoots after one pinch.
‘Ostfriesland’, the parent of ‘ALKLF’, differs from ‘ALKLF’ in having a larger plant size (50 to 60 cm in height), in having a plant habit that is not dwarf and in having less shoots after one pinch. ‘ALKLF’ can be compared to the cultivars ‘Haeumanarc’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 13,322), ‘Pink Friesland’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 18,152), and ‘Burgundy Candles’ (U.S. Plant Pat. The following is a detailed description of the new cultivar of plants 3 months in age (from a rooted cutting) as grown outdoors in 2-liter containers in Lisse, The Netherlands. The phenotype of the new cultivar may vary with variations in environmental, climatic, and cultural conditions, as it has not been tested under all possible environmental conditions. The color determination is in accordance with The 2015 R.H.S. Colour Chart of The Royal Horticultural Society, London, England, except where general color terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used.

- Plant type.—Herbaceous perennial.
- Plant habit.—Broad upright, dwarf.
- Plant size.—Average of 28.2 cm in height and 25.8 cm in diameter.
- Cold hardiness.—At least tolerant to U.S.D.A. Zone 4.
- Diseases and pests.—No susceptibility or resistance to diseases or pests has been observed.
