Abstract
A new cultivar of Hydrangea paniculata plant named ‘HPOPR018’ that is characterized by its compact plant habit, its early blooming season, and its compact panicles of primarily white sterile and fertile flowers with the fertile flowers clearly visible.
Description
This application is related to a European plant breeders' rights application filed on Oct. 24, 2017, application No. 2017/2687. There have been no offers for sale anywhere in the world prior to the effective filing date of this Application and no accessibility to one of ordinary skill in the art could have been derived from the printed plant breeder's rights documents.
Botanical classification: Hydrangea paniculata.
Varietal denomination: ‘HPOPR018’.
The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Hydrangea paniculata and will be referred to hereafter by its cultivar name, ‘HPOPR018’. ‘HPOPR018’ represents a new Hydrangea, a perennial shrub grown for landscape use and as a potted plant.
‘HPOPR018’ was derived from a breeding program conducted by the Inventor at a nursery in Merksplas, Belgium. The objective of the breeding program is to select new cultivars of Hydrangea with a compact plant habit and desirable flowers.
‘HPOPR018’ was selected in August of 2015 by the Inventor from amongst seedlings in a trial field that had been planted with seed collected from open pollination of numerous plants in the Inventor's breeding program in August of 2012. The exact parentage is therefore unknown.
Asexual propagation of the new cultivar was first accomplished by softwood stem cuttings by the Inventor in September of 2015 in Merksplas, Belgium. Asexual propagation by softwood stem cuttings has determined that the characteristics of the new cultivar are stable and are reproduced true to type in successive generations.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and represent the characteristics of the new cultivar. These attributes in combination distinguish ‘HPOPR018’ as a unique cultivar of Hydrangea.

The accompanying colored photographs illustrate the overall appearance and distinct characteristics of the new Hydrangea. The photographs were taken of a two-year-old plant of ‘HPOPR018’ as grown outdoors in a 17-cm container in Boskoop, The Netherlands.

The colors in the photographs are as close as possible with the photographic and printing technology utilized and the color values cited in the detailed botanical description accurately describe the colors of the new Hydrangea.
The following is a detailed description of two-year-old plants of ‘HPOPR018’ as grown outdoors in 17-cm containers in Boskoop, The Netherlands. The phenotype of the new cultivar may vary with variations in environmental, climatic, and cultural conditions, as it has not been tested under all possible environmental conditions. The color determination is in accordance with The 2015 Colour Chart of The Royal Horticultural Society, London, England, except where general color terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used.
- General description:

- Blooming period.—Approximately 5 weeks from early to late summer in The Netherlands.
- Plant type.—Deciduous shrub, panicle type Hydrangea.
- Plant habit.—Compact, upright to broadly upright.
- Height and spread.—Reaches 56.3 cm in height and 46 cm in spread as grown in a 17-cm container, reaches about 1.5 m in height and spread as a mature plant in the landscape.
- Hardiness.—At least in U.S.D.A. Zones 5 to 9.
- Diseases and pests.—No susceptibility and resistance to diseases or pests has been observed.
- Root description.—Fine, fibrous and dense, NN155A and 164A in color.
- Propagation.—Softwood stem cuttings.
- Root development.—An average of 30 days for root initiation with a young rooted plant produced in an average of 3 months.
