Abstract
A new and distinct cultivar of Sedum plant named ‘Twinkling Star’, characterized by its upright and compact plant habit; freely basally branching habit; dense and bushy growth habit; attractive yellow green-colored flowers; and good garden performance.
Description
Botanical designation: Hylotelephium spectabile.
Cultivar denomination: ‘TWINKLING STAR’.
The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Sedum plant, botanically known as Hylotelephium spectabile and hereinafter referred to by the name ‘Twinkling Star’.
The new Sedum plant is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the Inventor in Rijpwetering, The Netherlands. The objective of the breeding program is to create new strong and healthy Sedum cultivars with numerous attractive flowers.
The new Sedum plant originated from a cross-pollination during the summer of 2004 in Rijpwetering, The Netherlands, of Hylotelephium spectabile ‘Purple Emperor’, not patented, as the female, or seed, parent with Sedum telephium ‘Sunkissed’, disclosed in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 16,927, as the male, or pollen, parent. The new Sedum was discovered and selected by the Inventor as a single flowering plant within the progeny of the stated cross-pollination in a controlled greenhouse environment in Rijpwetering, The Netherlands during the summer of 2005.
Asexual reproduction of the new Sedum plant by vegetative cuttings in a controlled environment in Rijpwetering, The Netherlands since the summer of 2005, has shown that the unique features of this new Sedum plant are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations.
Plants of the new Sedum have not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature and light intensity without, however, any variance in genotype.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘Twinkling Star’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘Twinkling Star’ as a new and distinct cultivar of Sedum:

- 1. Upright and compact plant habit.
- 2. Freely basally branching habit; dense and bushy growth habit.
- 3. Attractive yellow green-colored flower.
- 4. Good garden performance.
Plants of the new Sedum differ from plants of the female parent, ‘Purple Emperor’, primarily in flower color as plants of ‘Purple Emperor’ have pink-colored flowers.
Plants of the new Sedum differ from plants of the male parent, ‘Sunkissed’ primarily in leaf color as plants of ‘Sunkissed’ have green to greyed green-colored leaves.
Plants of the new Sedum can be compared to plants of Sedum telephium ‘Bronco’, disclosed in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 18,085. Plants of the new Sedum and ‘Bronco’ differ in the following characteristics:

- 1. Plants of the new Sedum are more compact than plants of ‘Bronco’.
- 2. Plants of the new Sedum have darker yellow green-colored flowers than plants of ‘Bronco’.
The accompanying colored photographs illustrate the overall appearance of the new Sedum plant, showing the colors as true as it is reasonably possible to obtain in colored reproductions of this type. Colors in the photographs may differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed botanical description which accurately describe the colors of the new Sedum plant.

The aforementioned photographs and following observations, measurements and values describe plants grown in Rijpwetering, The Netherlands, under commercial practice during the autumn in an outdoor nursery with day temperatures ranging from 12° C. to 25° C. and night temperatures ranging from 2° C. to 14° C. Plants used in the photographs and description were two years old. In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, 2007 Edition, except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used.
