Abstract

A new and distinct cultivar of Kalanchoe plant named ‘Yazmin’, characterized by its upright and uniform plant habit; large white-colored double flowers with about 45 petals per flower; and excellent postproduction longevity.

Description

Botanical designation: Kalanchoe blossfeldiana.
Cultivar denomination: ‘Yazmin’.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Kalanchoe plant, botanically known as Kalanchoe blossfeldiana, and hereinafter referred to by the name ‘Yazmin’.
The new Kalanchoe is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the Inventor in Hinnerup, Denmark. The objective of the breeding program was to create new freely-flowering Kalanchoe cultivars with large flowers, numerous petals per flower, attractive flower coloration and excellent postproduction longevity.
The new Kalanchoe originated from a cross-pollination made on Nov. 24, 2004 in Hinnerup, Denmark, of the Kalanchoe blossfeldiana cultivar KJ 2003 0818, disclosed in U.S. Plant patent application Ser. No. 11/080,401, as the female, or seed, parent with the Kalanchoe blossfeldiana cultivar Simone 2000, disclosed in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 12,319, as the male, or pollen, parent. The new Kalanchoe was discovered and selected by the Inventor as a single flowering plant within the progeny of the stated cross-pollination grown in a controlled environment in Hinnerup, Denmark in June, 2005.
Asexual reproduction of the new Kalanchoe by terminal cuttings at Hinnerup, Denmark since July, 2005, has shown that the unique features of this new Kalanchoe are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations.
BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The cultivar Yazmin has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, daylength and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘Yazmin’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘Yazmin’ as a new and distinct cultivar:
    • 1. Upright and uniform plant habit.
    • 2. Large white-colored double flowers with about 45 petals per flower.
    • 3. Excellent postproduction longevity.
Plants of the new Kalanchoe can be compared to plants of the female parent, the cultivar KJ 2003 0818. Plants of the new Kalanchoe differ from plants of the cultivar KJ 2003 0818 in leaf and flower color as plants of the cultivar KJ 2003 0818 have darker green-colored leaves and light pink-colored flowers.
Plants of the new Kalanchoe can be compared to plants of the male parent, the cultivar Simone 2000. Plants of the new Kalanchoe differ from plants of the cultivar Simone 2000 in flower shape and size and shape as plants of the cultivar Simone 2000 have single flowers that are smaller in size than flowers of plants of the new Kalanchoe.
Plants of the new Kalanchoe can also be compared to plants of the Kalanchoe cultivar KJ 2003 0852, disclosed in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 17,528. In side-by-side comparisons, plants of the new Kalanchoe differ from plants of the cultivar KJ 2003 0852 in the following characteristics:
    • 1. Plants of the new Kalanchoe were not as vigorous as plants of the cultivar KJ 2003 0852.
    • 2. Plants of the new Kalanchoe had ovate-shaped leaves whereas plants of the cultivar KJ 2003 0852 had elliptic-shaped leaves.
    • 3. Plants of the new Kalanchoe had larger inflorescences with more flowers per inflorescence than plants of the cultivar KJ 2003 0852.
    • 4. Plants of the new Kalanchoe had larger flowers with more petals per flower than plants of the cultivar KJ 2003 0852.
    • 5. Plants of the new Kalanchoe flowered about six days earlier than plants of the cultivar KJ 2003 0852.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS
The accompanying colored photographs illustrate the overall appearance of the new Kalanchoe, showing the colors as true as it is reasonably possible to obtain in colored reproductions of this type. Colors in the photographs may differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed botanical description which accurately describe the colors of the new Kalanchoe. The photographs were taken under diffuse natural light conditions on a sunny day at approximately noon in Hinnerup, Denmark.
The photograph at the top of the sheet comprises a side perspective view of a typical flowering potted plant of ‘Yazmin’.
The photograph at the bottom of the sheet comprises a top perspective view of a typical flowering plant of ‘Yazmin’.
DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION
In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, 2001 Edition, except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used. Plants used in the photographs and for the following description were grown in Hinnerup, Denmark, under commercial practice in a glass-covered greenhouse for about 16 weeks with day temperatures about 19° C., night temperatures about 21° C. and light levels ranging from 10 to 50 kilolux. Plants used in the description and photographs were not pinched. Unless otherwise specified, the leaf description represents leaves from a vegetative plant.
