Description
Jan. 7, 1958 F. MEILLAND Plant Pat. 1,673
ROSE PLANT Filed April 29, 1957 IN VE N TOR A TTORNE YS United Sttes Patent O signor :to .The Conard-Pyle Company, West Grove, Pa.,
a corporation of Pennsylvania Application April 29, 195.7, Serial No.-655,9 31 1 Claim. or. 47-61 The ,presentinvention .relates .to anew and .distinct variety of rose plant of the hybrid polyantha class, which was originated 'byme by crossing an unnamed and unpatented seedling of Alain (unpatented) X Kordes Sondermeldung (unpatented) with the variety .Moulin Rouge (U. S.'Plant Patent/No. 1,298). I -As the result of this breeding, I have produced'a new rose variety which is particularly characterized as to novelty by the following features whicharenot present in combination inits parents or in any other variety of which I am aware:
(1) A strong and vigorous'habit of growth, both in the garden and in the greenhouse, and the ability tomake satisfactory growth in thelgreerihouse during the dark weather of winter seasons;
v (2) The excellent foliage which shows better than average resistance to mildew and blackspot;
(3) The good 'formof the blooms which are more double than'those of either parent;
(4) The intense Ir'idescentScarlet general color tonality of the blooms which are brighter than those of either parent; and I 1 ('5) The outstanding goodfkeeping qualities of the flowers as greenhouse cutflowers. Y A Asexual reproduction of my new variety, as performed on my behalf 'by budding at West Grove, Pennsylvania, U. S. A., and by grafting at Richmond, Indiana, U. S. A., shows that the foregoing characteristics and distinctions come true to form and are established and transmitted through succeeding propagations.
The accompanyingdrawing shows typical specimens of the vegetative growth and the flowers of my new variety in different stages of development and as depicted in color as nearly true as it is reasonably possible to make the same in a color illustration of this character.
The following is a detailed description of the new variety, with color terminology in accordance with the Horticultural Colour Chart of the Royal Horticultural Society, except Where general color terms of ordinary dictionary significance are obvious:
