Abstract
A new cultivar of Impatiens plant named ‘Fitam Light Pink’ that is characterized by large flowers, a freely branching habit and light pink flowers with a dark base. In combination, these traits set ‘Fitam Light Pink’ apart from all other existing varieties of Impatiens known to the inventor.
Description
Botanical classification: Impatiens hawkeri.
Variety denomination: ‘Fitam Light Pink’.
The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of New Guinea Impatiens plant botanically known as Impatiens hawkeri and hereinafter referred to by the cultivar name ‘Fitam Light Pink’.
The new cultivar is the product of a breeding program conducted by the inventor in a cultivated area of De Lier, The Netherlands. The objective of the breeding program is to develop new Impatiens cultivars with interesting and unique flower and foliage colors.
‘Fitam Light Pink’ is a hybrid that originated from the induced hybridization of the female or seed parent Impatiens ‘Tamarinda Pink Eye’ (not patented) and the male or pollen paren Impatiens ‘Harmony Light Orchid’ (not patented). The cultivar ‘Fitam Light Pink’ was selected by the inventor in 2000 as a single plant within the progeny of the stated cross in a controlled environment of De Lier, The Netherlands.
Asexual reproduction by terminal cuttings of the new cultivar ‘Fitam Light Pink’ were taken in 2000 in De Lier, The Netherlands by the inventor. Since that time, under careful observation, the unique characteristics of the new cultivar have been uniform, stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations of asexual reproduction.
The following represent the distinguishing characteristics of the new Impatiens cultivar ‘Fitam Light Pink’. These traits in combination distinguish ‘Fitam Light Pink’ as a new and distinct cultivar apart from all other existing varieties of Impatiens known to the inventor.
1. Impatiens ‘Fitam Light Pink’ exhibits large flowers.
2. Impatiens ‘Fitam Light Pink’ exhibits light pink flowers with a dark base.
3. Impatiens ‘Fitam Light Pink’ exhibits more branching.
The closest comparison variety is Impatiens ‘Totoya’ (not patented). Impatiens ‘Fitam Light Pink’ is different than ‘Totoya’ in having more branching and a larger flower size.
The new cultivar ‘Fitam Light Pink’ is distinguishable from the female parent Impatiens, ‘Tamarinda Pink Eye’ by the following characteristics:
1. ‘Fitam Light Pink’ has larger flowers than ‘Tamarinda Pink Eye’.
2. ‘Tamarinda Pink Eye’ has flower color that ranges from 66A to 73A.
The new cultivar ‘Fitam Light Pink’ is distinguishable from the male parent Impatiens ‘Harmony Light Orchid’ by the following characteristics:
1. ‘Fitam Light Pink’ is less vigorous than ‘Harmony Light Orchid’.
2. ‘Fitam Light Pink’ has darker flowers than ‘Harmony Light Orchid’.
3. ‘Fitam Light Pink’ has smaller flowers than ‘Harmony Light Orchid’.
The accompanying photograph illustrates the distinguishing traits of Impatiens ‘Fitam Light Pink’.
The plant in the photograph shows an overall view of a 10 week old plant.
The photograph was taken using conventional techniques and although colors may appear different from actual colors due to light reflectance it is as accurate as possible by conventional photographic techniques.
The following is a detailed description of the new Impatiens cultivar named ‘Fitam Light Pink’. Data was collected in De Lier, The Netherlands from 10 week glass greenhouse grown plants in 12 cm diameter containers. The time of year was June and the temperature was kept at 20° Centigrade during the day and night. The light level was natural outdoor light and there were no photoperiodic treatments or growth retardants used. Color determinations are in accordance with The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart 2001 edition, except where general color terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used. The growing requirements are similar to the species.
‘Fitam Light Pink’ has not been tested under all possible conditions and phenotypic differences may be observed with variations in environmental, climatic, and cultural conditions, however, without any variance in genotype.
