A new and distinct cultivar of Poinsettia plant named ‘Winred’, characterized by its incurved and curled red bracts; response time about 10 weeks; thick, strong and stiff lateral branches; very dark green leaves with thick red purple petioles; tall and upright plant habit; and good postproduction longevity.

Description

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Poinsettia plant, botanically known as Euphorbia pulcherrima Willd., and hereinafter referred to by the name ‘Winred’.
The new cultivar is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the Inventor in Encinitas, Calif. The objective of the program is to create new Poinsettia cultivars having interesting bract and leaf display, color and form; strong and freely branching stems; and good post-production longevity.
The new cultivar originated from a cross made by the Inventor of the proprietary selection identified as M-18, as the female, or seed parent, with the proprietary selection identified as F-14, as the male, or pollen parent.
The cultivar Winred was discovered and selected by the Inventor as a flowering plant within the progeny of the stated cross in a controlled environment in Encinitas, Calif. in December, 1994.
Asexual reproduction of the new Poinsettia by terminal cuttings taken at Encinitas, Calif., has shown that the unique features of this new Poinsettia are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations of asexual reproduction.
BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘Winred’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘Winred’ as a new and distinct cultivar:
1. Incurved and curled red bracts.
2. Response time about 10 weeks.
3. Thick, strong and stiff lateral branches.
4. Very dark green leaves with thick red purple petioles.
5. Tall and upright plant habit.
6. Good postproduction longevity.
In side-by-side comparisons conducted in Encinitas, Calif., plants of the new Poinsettia have a darker leaf and bract color than plants of the female parent, the selection M-18. Compared to plants of the male parent, the selection F-14, which has smooth bracts and leaves, plants of the new Poinsettia have incurved and curled bracts and leaves.
Plants of the new Poinsettia can be compared to plants of the cultivar Windark, disclosed in U.S. Plant Patent application Ser. No. 09/087,917. However, in side-by-side comparisons conducted in Encinitas, Calif., plants of the new Poinsettia differed from plants of ‘Windark’ in the following characteristics:
1. Plants of the new Poinsettia are taller than plants of ‘Windark’.
2. Plants of the new Poinsettia are not as freely branching as plants of ‘Windark’.
3. Plants of the new Poinsettia have stiffer stems than plants of ‘Windark’.
4. Plants of the new Poinsettia have more and larger leaves than plants of ‘Windark’.
5. Plants of the new Poinsettia have larger and taller (thicker) inflorescences than plants of ‘Windark’.
6. Flower bract color of the new Poinsettia is slightly lighter than flower bract color of ‘Windark’.
7. Plants of the new Poinsettia flower later than plants of ‘Windark’.

DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION
The new Poinsettia has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, daylength and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype. Both the photographic illustrations and the following observations and measurements describe about 18 week old plants grown in Encinitas, Calif., under commercial practice in a glass-covered greenhouse with day temperatures ranging from 21 to 27° C., night temperatures ranging from 18 to 20° C., and light levels about 4,000 foot-candles. Plants were grown in 16-cm pots, pinched one time, and flowered under naturally lengthening nyctoperiods during the fall/early winter.
In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used.

Parentage:
Female parent.—Proprietary selection of Euphorbia pulcherrima Willd. identified as M-18.
Male parent.—Proprietary selection of Euphorbia pulcherrima Willd. identified as F-14.
Propagation:
Type cutting.—Terminal cuttings.
Time to initiate roots.—Summer: About 7 days at 24° C. Winter: About 10 days at 22° C.
Time to develop roots.—Summer: About 26 days at 24° C. Winter: About 26 days at 22° C.
Rooting habit.—Freely branching, becoming fibrous with development.
Plant description:
Plant form.—Narrow inverted triangle.
Growth habit.—Tall and very upright. Not freely branching. Moderately vigorous.
Plant height.—About 30 cm.
Plant spread.—32 cm.
Crop time.—From unrooted cuttings to a flowering plant in a 16-cm container, about 18 weeks are required.
Stem description.—Appearance: Thick, strong and stiff. Number of lateral branches: About three lateral branches are formed after removal of the terminal apex. Lateral branch length: About 24 cm. Internode length: About 2.25 cm. Stem color: 146A.
Foliage description.—Arrangement: Alternate. Appearance: Leaves incurved toward stem; puckered and curled. Quantity of leaves per lateral branch: About 12. Length: About 11 cm. Width: About 7 cm. Shape: Ovate; very occasionally rounded lobed. Apex: Acuminate. Base: Rounded acute. Margin: Entire. Texture: Smooth, dull; very sparse pubescence on lower surface. Color: Young foliage, upper surface: Darker than 147A. Young foliage, lower surface: 147A. Mature foliage, upper surface: Darker than 147A. Mature foliage, lower surface: 147A. Inflorescence description:
