Abstract
A new and distinct cultivar of Poinsettia plant named ‘Winpeach’, characterized by its incurved and curled light pink bracts; early flowering, response time about 8.5 weeks; medium green leaves; tall and upright plant habit; and good postproduction longevity.
Description
The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Poinsettia plant, botanically known as Euphorbia pulcherrima Willd., and hereinafter referred to by the name ‘Winpeach’.
The new cultivar is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the Inventor in Encinitas, Calif. The objective of the program is to create new Poinsettia cultivars having interesting bract and leaf display, color and form; strong and freely branching stems; and excellent post-production longevity.
The new cultivar orginated from a cross made by the Inventor of the proprietary selection identified as 95-015-0854, as the female, or seed parent, with the proprietary selection identified as P-30, as the male, or pollen parent.
The cultivar Winpeach was discovered and selected by the Inventor as a flowering plant within the progeny of the stated cross in a controlled environment in Encinitas, Calif. in December, 1996.
Asexual reproduction of the new Poinsettia by terminal cuttings taken at Encinitas, Calif., has shown that the unique features of this new Poinsettia are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations of asexual reproduction.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘Winpeach’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘Winpeach’ as a new and distinct cultivar:
1. Incurved and curled light pink bracts.
2. Early flowering, response time about 8.5 weeks.
3. Medium green leaves.
4. Tall and upright plant habit.
5. Good postproduction longevity.
In side-by-side comparisons conducted in Encinitas, Calif., plants of the new Poinsettia have darker colored leaves and bracts than plants of the female parent, the selection 95-015-0854. In addition, plants of the new Poinsettia and the selection 95-015-0854 differ in leaf shape. Plants of the new Poinsettia are more compact than the white-bract male parent, the selection P-30.
Plants of the new Poinsettia can be compared to plants of the cultivar Winred, U.S. Plant Patent application Ser. No. 09/431,243. However, in side-by-side comparisons conducted in Encinitas, Calif., plants of the new Poinsettia and plants of the ‘Winred’ differ primarily in bract, leaf and petiole color.
Plants of the new Poinsettia can also be compared to plants of the cultivar Windark, disclosed in U.S. Plant Patent application Ser. No. 09/087,917. Male parent.—Proprietary selection of Euphorbia pulcherrima Willd. identified as P-30.
Propagation:
Type cutting.—Terminal cuttings.
Time to initiate roots.—Summer: About 7 days at 24° C. Winter: About 10 days at 22° C.
Time to develop roots.—Summer: About 26 days at 24° C. Winter: About 26 days at 22° C.
Rooting habit.—Freely branching, becoming fibrous with development.
Plant description:
Plant form.—Narrow inverted triangle.
Growth habit.—Tall and very upright. Not freely branching. Moderately vigorous.
Plant height.—About 32 cm.
Plant spread.—34 cm.
Crop time.—From unrooted cuttings to a flowering plant in a 16-cm container, about 17 weeks are required.
Stem description.—Appearance: Strong, stiff. Number of lateral branches: About three lateral branches are formed after removal of the terminal apex. Lateral branch length: About 24 cm. Internode length: About 1.75 cm. Stem color: 146A.
Foliage description.—Arrangement: Alternate. Appearance: Leaves incurved toward stem; puckered and curled. Quantity of leaves per lateral branch: About 11. Length: About 10 cm. Width: About 9.5 cm. Shape: Ovate and lobed. Apex: Acuminate. Base: Rounded to acute. Margin: Entire. Texture: Smooth, dull; very sparse pubescence on lower surface. Color: Young foliage, upper surface: Darker than 137A.
