Design No. 4,089, dated M'ay 31, 1870.
DESIGN FOR LAMP S.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To lwhom, it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, RUFUS SPAULDING MERRILL, of Hyde Park, in the county of Norfolk and State ot' Massachusetts, have invented a new and original Design for Lamps, of which the following is a specication, reference being had to the accompanying drawing which represents a side elevation of my improved lamp.
'ille lamp is intended for what is commonly known as a German student lamp.
It consists of a base or pedstal, A, which supports an upright rod or stem, B, surrnounted by an ornamental cap, as shown.
Upon this supporting stem is placed axially the fountain or reservoir, C, having at its top and bottom ornamental collars a b.
The reservoir is adapted to slide up and down on the stem, and is held in place by a screw, c.
From the under side of the reservoir extends a socket-piece, D, terminating in an ornamental drop d.
At right angles to the socket-piece is the pipe E with an ornamental bead upon it mid-way between its ends.
rlhe pipe is united with the wick-tube F of the Ar gand burner, which stands at right angles to the pipe, and terminates at its lower end with a cup, f, formed and ornamented as shown.
The burner is snrmountcd by the usual chimneygallery g, and chimney h.
The chimney is surrounded by a shade, G, of the configuration represented, which rests in a shadeholder, t', supported in a socket, k, on the top of the lamp reservoir.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is Y The general arrangement and configuration of the parts ot' a lamp, as herein shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have set my hand and afL fixed my seal this 29th day of April, 1870, before two subscribing witnesses.
RUFUS S. MERRILL. [L. s.]
