Description

DESIGN.
No. 35,684. Patented Feb. 4, I902. 0. A. MYGATT.
REFLECTOR FOB ARTIFICIAL L|GHTS lication file Jue H UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
OTIS A. MYGATT, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y.
DESIGN FOR A REFLECTOR FOR ARTIFICIAL LIGHTS.
T0 aZZ whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTIS A. IVIYGATT,1'eSiLling at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented and produced a new and useful Design for Reflectors for Artificial Lights, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The design relates to the form or configuration and surface ornamentation of transparent reflectors for artificial lights.
Figure l is a side elevation of a reflector embodying the design. Fig. 2 is an inside view. Fig. 3 is a broken vertical section on dotted line 3.
The reflector is composed of transparent material, on which the design appears to the eye somewhat differently than would a similar conformation applied to an opaque body, due to the prismatic character of the ornamentation, such appearance not being capable of expression in any terms of language with which I am familiar.
The body A is in the general form of a segment of a hollow sphere, and has a round opening at the center or apex of said spherical segment. Around this hole or opening outside the segment there is a ring or band B, which ring or band is fiat or smooth on its interior and is of what is known as ogee form in vertical section, as in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The outer surface of the spherical segment is covered by prisms 0, arranged spirally on the spherical surface, each prism extending from the base of the band B to the edge of the body A and increasing in width and height as the body grows larger. Each rib terminates in a beadlike projection D, the prisms at their terminals rounding into these beads. The inside of the body A is smooth; but the design of the exterior appears on the inner surface, (which is the face usually seen,) and by rea son of the translucent material of the reflector the design is shown on the inside of the reflector in a manner which I find it impossible to indicate in the line-d rawings permitted by the rules of the Patent Ofiice, but which has to the eye a peculiarly brilliant and, under certain conditions as to light, an iridescent effect.
What I claim is The design for a transparent reflector, having the body portion in form of a segment of a sphere, open at the center, said central opening surrounded by a band, as described, and the spherical body having on its outer surface spirally-arranged prisms, terminating in beads at the edge of the body, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony-whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OTIS A. MYGATT.
