UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
.IOIIN FRANZ, OF COCIIRAN, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO THE COCIIRAN CHAIR (30., OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR A CHAIR-SEAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 28,818, dated June '7, 1898.
Application filed Apri125, 1898. Serial No. 678,806. Term of patent 7 years.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN FRANZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cochran, in the county of Dcarborn and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new Design for a Chair-Seat, of which the following is a specification.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating this invention, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my newly-designed chair-seat; Fig. 2, a vertical section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts throughout both views of the drawings.
The leading features of this design consist in a general ogee shape in side elevation of the seat and seat-frame in which the concave line of the ogee will be next to the front of the seat, the ogee outline on the under side of the frame being interrupted by rounded swells, the front ones of which blend in outline with the ogee lines of the top, thereby producing a rounded front frame end, and
the other or rear swell forming an abrupt pointed projection at the upper rear end of the frame, a semieylindrical bar connecting the front rounded portions of the frame, a curved rear bar, and a seat-cover reaching from the front edge of the rear bar to the under side of the front bar.
A represents one of the side bars of the seat-frame, the upperedge of which, as stated, is formed on the line of an ogee, with the concave line a of the ogee next to the front of the seat. Between the points a the under side of the central portion of the bar A follows the curvature of the upper side of the bar and is parallel with it, while from these points outward the outline of said underside continues in rounded and approximately convex swells a and a". The front swell a terminates with the semicircular convex ends a, which blend in outline with the ogee lines of the top. The back swell a continues in an upward direction in a curve until it intersects the ogee top line, producing the pointed projection a.
The front transverse bar 13 has its outer or front side I) curved to correspond with the curvature of the side bars A, its inner side b being a plane surface.
The back transverse bar C is curved centrally and rearwardly and has its upper sur face 0 on a level with the top edge of the bars A.
The cover D extends from one frame A to the other and from near the inner edge of the bar C to the under side of the bar B, and its meeting with the seat-frame is marked by a bead d. This cover will have the uneven surface and pattern peculiar to a fabric of closewoven splints, which by being thus conspicuous and noticeable in physical characteristics from the frame of the seat and by being continued around to the under side of the round ed bar B gives a novel and pleasing effect.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The design fora chair-seat, substantially as shown and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal, at Indianapolis, Indiana, this [3th day of April, A. D. 1898.
