WITNESS -'to my THOMAS F. PAYNE, 0F PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
SHOWER-BATH CONSTRUCTION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 8, 1911.
Application filed July 21, 1910. Serial No. 573,091.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, THOMAS F. PAYNE, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Alle gheny and State of Pennsylvania, a citizen of the United States, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Shower-Bath Construction, of which improvements the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the construction of shower baths, and it has for its object a simple, secure, and sanitary arrangement of parts.
In the accompanying drawings which form part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of three adjoining shower baths which in their construction embody my present invention; Fi 2 is an incomplete vertical section on the line IIII of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a vertical section on a plane at right angles to that of Fi 2 and on a somewhat larger scale than Figs. 1 and 2, the plane being indicated by the line IIIIII Fig. l; Flgs. 4 and 5 show in side and end elevation, and on much larger scale, a detail of construction; Figs. 6 and 7 in like manner illustrate another detail, Fig. 7 being in this case a view in vertical section; Figs. 8 and 9 illustrate in like manner a third detail of construction, these figures showing the parts in elevation, and from points of view at right angles to one another.
Parts which are repeated in the several figures bear the same reference numerals in each case.
The shower-bath structure consists essentially of a basin portion 1 and a screen portion 2. The material of which these parts are composed is not in any degree essential invention, but ordinarily the basin portion will be formed of enameled iron, and the screen portion of slabs of marble or slate.
The basin portion for each individual shower is made preferably of a single integral piece, with a discharge orifice 3 at the lowest point of its central dished portion, and a peripheral supporting flange 4. Continuous with this peripheral supporting flange 4 are means for assembling the screen portion with the basin portion, which will presently be described in detail. The basin portion is preferably so designed, as by the reinforcing flanges 11 that it may rest upon a joist or other framework of a building, and so the rim of the basin portion may be board across the entrance to the showerbath booth.
The screen portion of the shower bath in my improved construction rests upon the flange 4 of the basin portion; and, since the basin may rest upon the frame of the building, as I have explained, the framework of the building may be made to support the entire structure.
The further features of my invention consist in the means for securing the screen portions in place upon the flange portions 4. Where the flange portion 4 lies in the outer perimeter of the entire structure, it is preferably provided with an upturned retaining edge 5, serving to retain the screen portion 2 from outward displacement and to prevent the escape of water outward from beneath the lower edge of the screen. The up er surface of the flange 4 is further preferably provided with buttons 12 upon which the lower edges of the marble screen will rest while leaving a s ace for the drainage of water inward. time the flange extends along the flange of an adjacent basin portion (that is where the flanges of two basins meet), such further details are emplo ed as are indicated in Figs. 4 to 9, inc usive These figures show three successive portions of the seat for the screen, the three ortions being the front, the back, and an interme diate point along the rim of the basin. In these Figs. 4 to 9 is illustrated the meeting of the rims of two adjacent basin portions. At either end, the flan e portions are provided with down-turned lugs 6, which may be bolted together to secure the adjacent basins together. In addition to these lugs for bolting, a seat 7 is provided, which serves both to receive the lower edge of the screen 2 and to secure more firmly and by sanitary joint the bodies of the basins. To this end, the seat 7 is provided, referably at intervals, with oppositely p aced upwardly extending lugs 8 successively illustrated in Figs. 4, 6, and 8, through which the lower edge of the screen portion may be bolted to place; and is also provided with oppositely disposed surfaces 9, which take over the rims of the adjacent basins, and which render more secure in their engagement by the weight of the screen 2 from above, more securely hold the basins in relative positions. A spacing web 10 preferably extends from this seat member 7, between the flan es 4 of the adjacent basin portions.
It wifi be observed that the opposite surfaces 9 of the screen seat are not only so arranged as to secure the adjacent basin portions in their predetermined relative positions, but these surfaces 9 are downwardly inclined and accordingly they are so disposed as to shed water and so to remain clean and sanitary.
It will be understood that in the construction of a single shower-bath booth, to be installed alone, the particular construction employed at the meeting of two adjacent booths will be dispensed with, and the rim flange will be continued around all three sides.
I claim herein as my invention:
1. In a Shower-bath structure, the combination of a basin and a screen, said basin being provided with a peripheral flange, said basin arranged to rest upon the framework of a buildin to afford su port from beneath, and said an e arrange to sustain the screen portion resting upon it above and to form a drain passage beneath the edge ofsaid screen portion, substantially as described.
2. In a shower-bath structure, the combination of a flanged basin portion and a screen portion resting on the flange of said Copies of this patent may be obtained for basin portion, the bearing surface of said flange being shaped to form a drain passage beneath the edge of said screen portion, substantially as described.
3. In a shower-bath structure, the combination of two adjacent basin portions, each provided with a peripheral flange, a screen seat resting upon said flanges, and having oppositely arranged surfaces engagin the rims of said basin portions, substantia ly as described.
4. In a shower-bath structure, the combination of two adjacent basin portions provided with peripheral flanges extending in proximity to one another, a screen seat resting upon the said flanges, and provided with a spacing web extendlng between the proxi mate edges of said flanges, substantially as described.
5. In a shower-bath structure, a combination of two adjacent basin portions, each provided with a peripheral flan e and with oppositely-arranged downwar ly inclined surfaces, a screen seat resting upon said flanges and having surfaces en aging the aforesaid op )osite and downwar 1y inclined surfaces of t e adjacently-plaged basin portions, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
