To all 'whom it may concern:- V f Be it known that I, GEORGE S. ANDERSON, a oitizen of the United States of-America, at lalftriisbur in the county of uplliiji and @tate o. Pennsylvania, have lifitt'fittl eer w and useful Improvements irloi,y tYuT'yp, frites ACoveis and Copy-l-Iold'e'ts,l @t the following leekjed in its pretesti/e tiveview' @tiene efthe l a brackets, Fig". is a detail sectional is a specification. MY present invention relates to :i Goin:
bined type-writer cover and copy holder,y
the object being to produce asimple-aiid ineipeiisive @over arranged to inclose and-protet thewtypewriter and capable ef being thrown back to a; position in which twll leave tlietypwriti" entirely' unobstructed" and in wiiieh it will serve a heit-ier for checksb tl ,I y W ni the accenten nig i is vperspeetiye View er allied-Fisher typewritingsa-eeiiag aiaehiiie @mapped with my ombined cover and copy. holder',l the' latterbeing shown in use as a copy holder.

A Each 'part wherever shown is designated bya reference eharaeter appropriated te it. ThekElliot-teFisl'iertypewriter and adder is indicated'as a whole by 1.E As is well un derstood in rthe art, the typewriter. includes a main frame 2 which 4travels longitudinally y of ."1 stationary platen, notshown, and. supports a carriage 3 which travels transversely' the platen on `the frame. Upon the car- `riage is..mounted the downwardly acting `printing mechanism including keys` which,
'aside from their function as actuating def vices for-the. printing mechanism, also operate `an adding mechanism which includes what is known as a register o1" computing device l adjustably mounted ou a register Supporting bar 5 located in rear of the carriage 3 and supported at itsbpposite ends CbMBINED TYPE-WRITER COVER AND COYYHOXQDER.
Patented Aug. 1, 1911.:
,by brackets 6 secured to the rear sido of the fronte 2. At the front side of the frame 2 and adial-@ent to the bottom of the carriage is secured a` scale bar 7 along which the column stops of the typewriting mechanism are arranged. This general description of the Elliott-Fisher typewriter and` adder is deemed suiiicieiit for present purphees, particularly as the machine is a well known article of commer, but reference is made t6 patentlNo. 829,971 to C.. F. Laganke and J. A. Siiith, for a' more complete disclosure than is here considered necessary.
The combinedv cover' and copy holder S is supported by brackets 9 secured to and `rising from theregister supporting bar 5 at""the back of the frame. and is, adapted to be swung down to the position indicated in Fig. Q, iifudiich it inclos'es and protects the carriage, or `-sirui'ig up to the position indicated inliig.` 1, .in which it serves asa holder for Checks oi' other copy. y
The @over 8 is generally hood-shaped, comprising' a. pair'of similar side walls 10 ends are given a somewhat more abrupt ture at the front end of the cover being struck from a somewhat greater radius to give depth to that portion of the' cover which incloses the front portion of the carria ce and the keyboard.
djacent to the front end of the cover, as shown in Fig. 2, the side walls 10 and 11 are cut away or notched to form shouldersle which rest upon the upper front bar of the frame 2 in order that the weight of the cover may be sustained by the frame ot the .typewriter at opposite sides of the carriage, which the cover incloses. The notching of the end walls 10 in the manner stated perdown infront of the scale bar 7\, see more particularly Fig. 3. In order to secure the front edge of the cover to the machine, an angular hasp or catch is hinged as at 16, to the wall 11 at a point `iust above the 'lower edge thereof and is. slotted. for the aothe wall 11 adi'acent to its front .edge and designed to r veive the hasp 18 of a lock 19.
curvature, as shown at 12 and 13, this curva? commodation of a staple 17 projecting from mits the' front edge of the wall 11 tod-rop ico and rear ends et the Acover rlhis construction will be fully understood by reference to Figs. 2 and 3. It will be seen that when the front edge of the cover is dropped down upon the frame of the machine the catch 1'3 carried thereby may` be swung under a fixed part of the typewriter frame, as for instance the scale bar 7, and locked in that position by the lockA 19. catch 15 thus resists the upward swinging of the cover which is necessary to secure' access to the operating mechanism of thetypewriter.
The structure as thus tar described constitutes a complete embodiment of the invention inasn'luch as it includes a cover adapted to swing from brackets at the rear of the typewriter. and shiftable into and out of its protective position. It is contemplated, however, to utilize the cover as a copy holder when swung back from the machine. To this end it is desirable to provide for the support of the cover in an elevated inclined pw sit-ion so that checks or other.copy placed therein will be in full view of the operator. To attain this result the brackets 9 are provided with slots 20 located adjacent to their upper ends and having an inclinationbt approximately forty-live degrees. f The slots20 are provided at their lower rear ends with right angular extensions 2l disposed tor# wardly and designed to'constitute seats for trunnions when vthe cover is in the depressed position shown in Fig. 2. The trunnions extend from the side wal-lslOot the cover adjacent to the smaller end of the latter, the distancel between said trunnions and the front edge of the wall 11 bein'g such,
locked in their deoressed iositons.
llVhen it is desired to remove the coverj `from the machine the lock 19 1s removedl and the catch 15 is swung back to the dott-ed osition indicatcdzin Fie'. 3.' The frontend-of the cover is now raised until the machine offers no obstruction to such backward movement of the cover as is necessary to cause the trunnions 22 to' travel out of the seatsl A2l and into the slots 20. .The cover is then-swung .back or reversed t0 present the trunnions v22 at `the upper ends of" the slots 20and to allow what now be.-
com'es the bottom ot the copy holder to rest luponsmall rollers 2?) n'lountedat the inner sides ol l ugs extendingr vertically at the upper ends of the brackets 9 but termina-ting in a lower plane than the upper ends of the slots 20. The rollers 23 constitute supports for the copy holder as it will be seen that the major portion of the .copy holder' lies to the rear of these rollers and tends to gravitate, this tendency being resisted by the contacting of' the trunnions 22 with the upper ends of the slots 20. Thus when the copy holder is swung back, it will assume an inverted angular position in rear of the machine.
To restore the cover to its depressed or protective position is is merely necessary to depress the front edge of the copy holder, the rollers 23 acting as and the vtrunnions 22 traveling down the slots 20 until the copy holder assumes a position from which itwill readily drop down over the machine. It will be seen that both in raising and lowering the copy holder or cover, the contact between the wall l1 and the supports 23 will be a shifting contact and itis VVAfor this reason that rollers are provided at this point to minimize the elementof friction.
Any suitable provision for the support of the copy in the holder 8 maybe provided, but I have shown a simple arrangement which includes a copy support in the form of a flange 25 extending across the inside of the cover or. holder and secured at one edge to the wall 1l, a guard bar or member 26 being extended between the walls l() at a point sutliciently removed from the flange 25 and the wall 11 to guard checks, or other copy, which are placed edgewise upon the flange 25 behind the bar 2G and rest againstthe wall ll of the holder.
It will be noted that the flange or copy support 25 not only serves as a support for the checks or other copy, but also subdividcs the receptacle-shaped cover into two compartments into one 0f which the checks may be turned from the other to facilitate the rapid copying of a large number of such checks.
The manner of securing the brackets t) to the machine may be varied within wide limits, but in the present construction the brackets are provided with angular guides 27 slidably fitted upon the register supporting bar 5 and retained in position by set screws 2 8, as clearly shown in Figs. '3 and 4.
It is thought that from the foregoing, the construction, operation and advantages of my combined cover and copy holder will be clearly comprehended, but I Wish to re- 'serve theright to effect such modifications of the illustrated fairly Within the prayed.
What I claim is 1.- Thev combination with structure as may come scope of the protection a typewriter in- 'eludinga frame and a movable carriage, of
shifting ful crurns a support carried by one of said elements of the typewriter, and a cover invertibly mounted on "said support to constitute a copy holder in one position and to cover and conine the carriage in another position.
2. The combination with a typewriter' including' a frame and carriage, of a'support carried' by one of said elements of the typewriter in rear of the carriage, an invertible cover mounted on the support and movable to either of two positions in one of which it covers and confines the carriage `and in the other of which it is adapted to support copy on the inside of the cover, and means located on the inside of the cover to properly position the copy.
3. The combination with a typewriter, of a cover slidably mounted in supports secured to the frame of the typewriter and movable to and away from its vprotective position.
4'. The combination with a typewriter, of a combined cover and Copy holder Vhaving loose pivotal eonnectionwith the typewriter and movable to diiere'nt positions in one of which it covers and protects the machine and inthe other of which it is adapted to holdcopy-in the View of the operator.
5. The combination with a typewriter including aframe and carriage, of a cover carried by the frame and movable thereon linto and out of protective position, and arranged when in protective position to cover the keyboard and to lock the carriage against movement.
6. The combination with a typewriter, of
i a support carried thereby, and an invertible combined cover and copy holder mounted on the support.
j 7. The combinationwith a typewriter, of
a, support provided with an angular slot, of..
a cover having a projection extended into the slot and movable to either of two positions.
8. The combination with a typewriter, of a support having a slot provided with a forward extension at its lower end, and a cover having a projection movable in an angular slot of the support.
9. The combination with a typewriter, of a support having a slot and a rest in rear-of the slot, the lower end of the slot being extended forwardly, and a cover having'a v located within the receptacle formed by the Icover and dividing said receptacle into front and lnear check 'receiving compartments.
In testimony whereofL I aix myV signature in presence of two witnesses.
