UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN .H. VIESER, 01E CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
' I DEX-1N BOOKS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented 1 1911 Application filed March 8, 1911.
Serial No. 613,120.
To all whom it may concern':
Be it known that I, JOHN H. Vmsnn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements for Indexes in Books, of which the followingis a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in indexes for books, and has for its object the production of a device of this character, which will be in the nature of an attachment, that is, one which may be readily and easily attached to a book already in -use..
A further object is the production ofan index as mentionedwhich will be of durable and economical construction and etficient in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in view my invention consists in an index characterized as above mentioned and in certain details of constructions and arrangements of parts all as w1ll be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this spec fication, and in which- Figure 1 is .a perspective view of one of the index sheets included in the construction,
detached, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the frame for securing the index sheets together,
Fi 3 is an enlarged sectional detail of one en of said frame, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the book to which is applied an index embodying the invention.
The preferred form of my invention as illustrated in the drawing comprises a plurality of index sheets 1, each of the latter, as illustrated in Fig. 1 being preferablyof rectangular form and formed of any sultable material, paper or cardboard belng preferably employed. Arranged at the rearward edge of each of the sheets 1 is a pref erably metallic bar 2, the latter being secured in position upon said sheet by means of a metallic binding 3 which is rig dly secured upon the rearward edge of sa1d sheet through the medium of rivets 41. Said bar 2 and the binding 3 are of an exceedingly thin construction so as to adapt the sheet 1 for arrangement between the leaves of a book without unseemly bulging of the latter,
as will be readily understood. Formed at the respective extremities of each of the bars 2 are spherical enlargements 5. Formed at a projecting ear 6, the ears 6 when the index is arranged upon a book, projecting from the front edges of the leaves of the latter, as clearly shown in Fig. 4 to serve as means of designating particular divisions in the book, said ears when so serving being provided with characters indicative of the places they mark in the book.
The sheets 1 are held in proper ppsition between the leaves of the book through the substantially semicircular plates 7 which are arranged at the upper and lower edges of the book adjacent the back thereof. Said plates 7 are detachably connected through the medium of an elongated bar or connectlng member which is adapted to extend medially and longitudinally of the back of the book adjacent thereto, said connecting and the bar portion 9 the ,o'uterextremities of the members 8 and Q-being flared and die 10. The adjacentv ends of the members 8 and 9 are inthreaded connection as clearly illustrated thus affording means whereby the distance between the plates 7 may be readily varied in order to adapt said frame for arrangement upon books of difl'erent heights. 1
.plate 7 are arcuate or semicircular grooves '11, the outer open ends of said grooves being closed by plates 12 which are secured to the forward edges of the members 7 by such cross sectional form as to adapt the same to snugly receive the outer ends of the bars 2 as clearly shown 1n Fig. 3, the inner portions of said groovesbeing enlarged'to snugly receive the enlargements 5 at the extremities of said bars so that when the extremities of said'barsf-arein engagement with said grooves, the same will-be locked therein against -longitudinal movement, said transversely, that is; longitudinally of said grooves. Provided adjacent one of the extremities of each of the grooves. 11 is an enlargement 1a which serves as an entrance slot through which the enlargement 5 may be inserted into engagement with the groove -11. A
With an index ofthe construction as set the forward edges of each of the sheets 1 istachably connectedwith the plate 7 by screws medium of a frame comprising two similar member comprising the tubular portion 8 Provided in the adjacent surfaces of the v means ofiscrews 13. The grooves 11 are of bars being however permitted to move freely,
- 25 be manufactured at a low cost.
forth when it is desired to arrange the same in a book, the plates 7 are first disconnected, this being done by removing the screws 10. The sheets 1 are then arranged between the 5 plates 7 with the extremities 5 of the bars 2 thereof engaging the grooves 11 in the .man
ner as above described. The sheets 1 are now slid into position between the leaves of the book at the particular locations desired,
the plate 7 being drawn rearwardly upon the upper and lower edges of the book until the rearward or curved edges of said plates register with the curved back of the book. The connecting member is now adjusted by 15 threading the members 8 and 9 together so as to adapt the outer extremities thereof for connection with the plate 7, such connection being effected by the replacement of the screws 10. Thus it will be seen that an index is provided which is adapted for arrangement in a book already bound, and in which the index leaves are free for adjustment as desired between the leaves of the book. The device is of simple construction hence may The same may be readily and quickly applied to a book and when in operative position the same is adapted to efliciently serve in the capacity for which the same is designed.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred construction for carrying my invention into effect this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction as set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
40 Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1-. An index of the character described comprising a plurality of index sheets having projecting studs at opposite edges;
