SHADE-HOLDER FOR LAMPS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we,Ti-roMAs A. LEGGE and PETER HUs'roN, citizens of the United States, and residents of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shade-Holders for Lamps, of which thefollowing is a specification, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.

The invention relates to shade holders used more particularly in connection with incandescent electric lamps, and of the type in which the flange of the shade is held within a base-plate by means of an endless helical spring which is compressed by being forced up along a beveled face of'a depending flange of the base-plate by means of an annulus having an instanding flange, and being in threaded engagement with the periphery of the base.

The object of the invention is to prevent the separation of the annulus from the base in connection with the ordinary operation of the device; and it consists in a shadeholder of the type described,'with a removable stop for limiting the downward movement of the annulus.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective of a lamp bracket with the holder and shade shown in sectional detail; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the shadeholder; and Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective of the stop-ring used for preventing the separation of the parts of the holder.

The bracket 10 forms no part of the present invention, and may, of course, be of any desired form. The same is true of the socket 11 for holding an incandescent lamp. This socket, as is usual in electric lamp fixtures, is connected with the bracket 10, and upon its upper end is mounted the shade holder. This shade-holder consists of a circular baseplate 12, centrally apertured, as indicated at 13, to fit upon the stem of the socket 11, and being provided with a depending marginal flange 14. This flange has its inner face beveled, as shown at 15, and its outer face threaded, as shown at 16. An annulus 17 is in threaded engagement with the periphery of the base 12, and has at its lower margin an instanding flange 18, which, with the beveled face 15 of the flange of the base, forms a pocket within which is seated a Specification of Letters Patent.

When the annulus is turned down upon the thread to increase the size of the pocket between its flange and the beveled seat 15, the spring ring 19 expands and permits the entry of the shade flange 20. By turning up the annulus 17 the spring 19 is forced upwardly along the beveled face 15, and is thus contracted diametrically and forced under the shade flange 20, thereby preventing its withdrawal from the holder. As thus far described the device is of known construction.

In practice much trouble has arisen from the tendency of the user to entirely separate the elements of the holder in removing the shade. Although this is unnecessary, it is frequently done in railroad service, where the device is commonly used, as inexperienced hands are necessarily often put at the work of attending the lamps. l/Vhen the parts are separated the annulus is apt to drop to the floor and be bruised and distorted, rendering repairs necessary. In order to prevent this annoyance the present invention involves the introduction of a removable stop for limiting the downward movement of the annulus to the distance only which is necessary to permit a sufficient expansion of the holding spring to release the shade. The preferred means for accomplishing this result are illustrated in the drawings, and consist of an open wire ring 22, inserted in an annular channel 23 in the inner face of the annulus 17 above the threaded portion thereof. When the annu lus is turned down to release the shade the ring 22 comes in contact with a shoulder 24 formed on the periphery of the base 12 immediately above the threads 16, and thus positively locks the parts to gether. The ring 22 is easily sprung into place when the parts are assembled, and will remain within its seat until purposely removed therefrom by the use of a suitable tool.

The general appearance of the shadeholder is not changed from that which has heretofore been followed, and the stop ring is not discoverable except by close inspection, and could not readily be removed by an inexperienced person even though it were discovered.

Ve claim as our invention 1. In a shade holder for lamps, in combination, a circular base having a depending flange, the inner Wall of the flange being beveled and its outer Wall being threaded and having a shoulder above the thread, a ring threaded to engage the thread of the base and having an instanding flange at its outer edge, an expansible clamping ring Within the flanged ring and seated on the flange thereof, and a removable stop secured Within the inner end of the flanged ring and engageable With the shoulder of the support.

2. In a shade holder for lamps, in combination, a circular base having a depending flange, the inner Wall of the flange being beveled and its outer Wall being threaded and having a shoulder above the thread, a ring threaded to engage the thread of the base and having an instanding flange at its outer edge and an annular recess adjacent its inner edge, an expansible ring seated Within the recess and projecting inwardly beyond the threaded surface of the first-named ring, and an expansible clamping ring inclosed Within the first-named ring and seated upon its instanding flange.

8. In a shade-holder for lamps, in combination, a circular base having a threaded periphery and a shoulder above the thread, an annulus in threaded engagement with the base, means actuated by the annulus for clamping a shade, and a stop carried by the annulus and engageable With the shoulder.
