To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that we, BERNARD LICHTIG and PAUL P. ADoLPI-I, a citizen of the United States and a subject of the German Emperor, respectively, andresidents of the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to match boxes, and more particularly to a match box which can be attached to a wall or other support and used as a match safe.

One of the objects of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction, efficient in operation, and which can be readily and economically assembled.

Another object of the invention is to provide a match box which, although possessing a number of advantages over those heretofore in use, can be made about as cheaply as the match packages now generally employed.

With these and other objects in view, which will appear as the nature of the in vention is better understood, the same consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, pointed out in the appended claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that various changes may be made in the size, proportion and minor details of construction without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

One of the many possible embodiments of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a match box, constructed in accordance with the present invention, attached to a wall and ready for use; Fig. 2 is a similar view of the device in position ready to be shipped; Fig. 3 is a similar view of a detail of construction; and Fig. 4 is a section taken on line 4, 4 of Fig. 2.

In the said drawings, the numeral 4 indicates a rectangular receptacle, which consists of a bottom portion 5, two side walls 6, 6 and the end walls 7 7 Into this receptacle are placed the matches in the usual manner. The receptacle 4 is inclosed within an outer casing 8, which comprises front and rear walls 9, 9, side walls 10, 10, a bottom 11, two side flaps 12, 12 and a cover 13, having a folding line 14 running parallel with the upper edge of the front wall 9. The cover 13 is provided with a perforation 15 for a purpose hereinafter to be described. In the front wall 9, and more particularly in its lower end portion, is provided a rectangular opening 16, which is normally covered by the front wall 17 of a.

drawer 18, the side walls 19, 19, and the bottom 20 of which are inserted between the walls of the casing 8 and the walls of the receptacle 4. Upon the side walls 19, 19 of the drawer 18 are arranged upwardly projecting extensions 21, 21, the purpose of whlch will be described presently.

\Vhen preparing the match box for shipment, the flaps 12, 12 and 13 are brought into the planes of the side walls 10, 10 and the rear wall 9, respectively; the drawer 18 in then inserted into the opening 16 and pushed backward until its front wall 17 lies in the plane of the front wall 9 of the casing 8. The receptacle 4, having been previously filled with matches, is then slid into the casing 8 with its open part in contact with the front wall 9 of the casing, whereby the side walls 19, 19 and the bottom 20' of the drawer 18 come to lie between the walls of the receptacle 4 and the casing 8. The flaps 12, 12 are then folded upon the corresponding end wall 7 of the receptacle 4, the cover 13 of the casing 8 folded along its line 14 and that portion of the cover 13, which lies between the folding line 14 and the edge 18', is inserted between the front wall 9 of the casing 8 and the receptacle 4, whereby the match box is ready for shipment. It will be observed that an entirely closed match box is thus provided, which may be handled with less care than the match boxes heretofore in use and the receptacle 4 will still be held safely in position in its casing 8.

When the match box is to be used as a match safe, the cover 13 thereof is folded into the plane of the rear wall 9, and its perforation 15 brought into engagement with a nail or other holding means upon a wall or support. The drawer 18 is then pulled outward until its extensions 21, 21 engage the front wall 9, whereby some of the matches will enter the drawer, to be taken out as necessary. It is obvious that as some of the matches are taken out of the drawer, a corresponding quantity will be brought into the same automatically. Since three of the walls of the drawer are properly guided, the same can be easily brought into its operating position. The extensions 21, 21 of the drawer prevent the same from being disengaged from the casing 8. What we claim is:

In a match box, the combination with a rectangular receptacle having a bottom, two

side walls and two end walls, of a telescoping casing which receives said receptacle and comprises a front wall having an opening in its lower portion, a rear wall, two side walls, a bottom, two side flaps adapted to be folded upon one of the end walls of said receptacle, and a cover flap provided with a folding line and a perforation, whereby that portion of said cover flap which extends be tween said folding line and one of the edges of said flap is adapted to be inserted between said front wall and said receptacle forming thereby a complete inclosure for said receptacle and preventing the latter from sliding out from said casing, and a drawer comprising a front wall, two side walls having upwardly extending projections, and a bottom, the side walls and bottom of said drawer being arranged between the walls of said receptacle and the walls and bottom of said casing when said drawer is inserted into said opening.
