CURTAIN-HANGING DEVICE.

Be it known that I, IGNAGE Kwnr'riiowsrir, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain-Hanging Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. 1

This invention relates to improvements in curtain rods, rod holders and curtain operating devices, and consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices, hereinafter described and claimed.

The object of my invention is to provide improved means for hanging inner and outer curtains of a window, and for opening and closing the curtains at will.

In the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a curtain hanging device constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the same attached to a window casing. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal horizontal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective. view of one of the end bloc is. Fig. t is a similar view of one of the curtain hooks and its guide rod. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view through one of the tubular curtain rods, and showing the devices therein for hanging and operating the curtains.

In accordance with my invention, I provide a pair of tubular curtain rods 1, 2, which are respectively employed for hanging the inner curtains 3, and the outer curtains 4 of a window or the like. The said tubular curtain rods have their ends placed in sockets 5, of a pair of brackets 6, the said brackets being secured to opposite sides of the window casing as by means of screws or other suitable devices 7. The sockets 5 open at the inner sides of the said brackets and close at the outer sides thereof, so that those portions of the brackets which form the bottoms of the said sockets serve to cover and hide the ends of the tubular curtain rods. Each of the curtain rods is provided in one side with a longitudinal opening 8. A pair' of blocks or plugs 9 are fitted in the ends of each of the tubular curtain rods, and the said blocks or plugs are connected together by a longitudinally disposed guide wire 10. Fach plug is provided at its inner end with a recess 11 in which is seated a direction element, here shown as a pulley 1Q, the said pulleys being mounted on pins 13a,

which extend transversely through the plugs and serve to also secure them in the ends of the tubular rods. Each of the said plugs is also provided with a pair of guide and direction openings 13, the brackets 5 being provided with similar guide and direction openings 14 which register with the openings 13.

In Fig. 1 of the drawings, I here show the curtains as hung from the hooks 15 by means of suitable safety pins 17, but the curtains may be hung from the hooks in any other suitable way or by any other suitable means, and I do not desire to limit myself in this particular.

The opening 8 of ea'ch curtain rod is in one side thereof and between the upper and lower sides of the rod. rIhe hooks 15 are each provided with an arm 15a which eX- tends horizontally from the rod 10 and through and bears against the lower side of the opening 8. Hence, when the curtains are hung from the hooks their weight is imposed upon the lower sides of the openings 8 in the tubular curtain rods and the rods 10 are relieved from the major portion of the weight of the curtains and hence are not likely to sag and cause the curtains to droop, and, moreover, by thus supporting the hooks partly by the tubular curtain rods and partly by the guide rods 10 the movement of the hooks in the tubular curtain rods is facilitated. This specific arrangement of the tubular curtain rod, guide rods and hooks is clearly indicated in Figs. 1 and 5.

Each curtain is provided with an operating cord 18 which passes over one of the pulleys 12 and out through the openings 13, 14 of the plugs 9, and the brackets 6, yrespectively and the ends of the cords are preferably provided with handles 19 of suitable design. The respective sides of the loop formed by each cord are secured to the hooks 15 at opposite sides of the curtain in connection with which the said cord is einployed, so that when one end of the cord is drawn downwardly the curtain will be opened or moved to the outer side of the window, and when the other end of the cord is drawn downwardly the curtain will be closed, that is to say, it will be moved in the reverse direction.

It will be observed that the one pair of brackets (i, serve to support both of the tubular curtain rods, so that both of the tubular curtain rods may be readily put up or taken down from the window.

A tubular curtain rod having a longitudinal slot in one side, between the upper and lower sides of the rod and further provided with a centrally disposed longitudinally extending guide rod, and curtain hanging hooks slidable on the guide rod and having arms extending outwardly through the slot in the tubular curtain rod and bearing on the bottom of said slot so that the weight of the curtain suspended from the hooks is mainly borne directly by the tubular rod and the guide rod is relieved thereof.
