UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARTIN R. SCI-IAFFER, OF READING, PENNSYLVANIA.
SCREEN FOR SINKS.
To all `whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN R. SGHAFFER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Screens for Sinks, of which the following is a speciti cation, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to kitchen sinks, and has reference to devices for preventing the waste pipe connected with the sink from becoming clogged by the collecting of grease and other matter from the washing of dishes, cooking utensils, etc., entering the sink.
The invention has for its object to provide an improved device of this kind which is mounted in the mouth of the waste pipe of a kitchen sink and is adapted to collect grease and other matter passing into the waste pipe.
Referring to the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a top plan view of a perforated plate adapted to t o-ver the mouth of a waste pipe connected with the kitchen sink. Fig. 2 is a side view of a wire receptacle secured to the underside of the plate shown in Fig. l, said parts being in transverse section on the line X-X in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the wire receptacle det-ached from the plate. Fig. 4 is an edge view of the plate shown in Fig. l. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail view in cross section of a portion of the plate shown in Fig. l.
In carrying out the invention a circular plate l is employed which is adapted to fit into the bottom of a sink over the mouth of the waste pipe connected with the sink, said plate l having holes 2 for the passage of water from the sink and being detachably secured in place in any suitable manner, preferably, as here shown, by means of slots 8 in the opposite edges of the plate 1 which are formed with. a countersunk portion, in the inner end thereof by forcing down a portion of the metal t thereby serving to seat the head of a screw which projects through each slot 3 and is secured to the sink. By means of this construction the plate 1 may be readily removed by releasing the screws.
In conjunction with the plate 1 is em ployed a wire receptacle 5 to catch and prevent grease and other matter in the water in the sink from passing through to the waste Specification of Letters Patent.

pipe and cloggin` up the same. This wire receptacle is pre erably in the form of a hemispherical basket and is provided at its top with a metallic strengthening band G to which the wire screen of the basket is secured in any suitable manner. The wire receptacle or basket 5 is preferably detachably secured to the plate l in any suitable manner and as here shown by means of metallic angular strips 7 riveted to the band 6 and projecting laterally from the basket 5 and d-etachably engaging the plate l by any suitable means as for example, by means of the metallic lips 8 which are located on the opposite sides of the holes 2 in the plate l and formed by being cut out of the plate l and bent back and curved to conform to the periphery of the basket, said lips 8 being adapted to be moved into engagement with the strips 7 on the basket, by turning the basket on the plate. In this manner, as shown in Fig. 2 the plate is then seated on the sink hole over the mouth of the waste pipe and is secured by means of screws projecting through the slots 3 engaging the sink with their heads located in the countersunk portion 1 of the plate.
It will be seen that by means 0f this invention waste matter and grease will be collected in the basket 5 .and will be prevented from passing into the waste pipe while the water can readily pass through the holes 2 and through the basket 5 to the waste pipe. Vhen it is desired to clean out the basket 5, it may be readily removed and cleaned and then replaced.
That- I claim is l. In a device of the character described, a plate having holes adapted to be seated in the sink hole of a sink and having lugs on its under side, and a wire receptacle having a metallic band secured about the edge of its mouth with metallic strips projecting therefrom and adapted to detachably engage the lugs on the plate.
2. In a device of the character described, a plate having holes and adapted to be seated in the sink hole of a sink and having lips bent over toward its under side, and a wire basket having its mouth provided with a reinforcing metallic band, and angular metallic lips projecting from said band and adapted to detachably engage said lips on the plate.
3. In a device of the character described, a plate having holes, lips struck up from said plate and bent toward its under side in the direction of a curve, and a heinispherically shaped Wire basket having' a Inetallic band extending` about its niouth, and a metallic angled piece secured to said band on opposite sides and adapted to engage the struck up lips on the plate.
fl. In a device of the character described', a plate having' holes and lips bent up from said plate and extending in a curved direction, and slots inthe opposite edges of the plate With a countersunk portionat the inner end of each slot, said plate being adapted to be seated in a sink hole of a sink, and a Wire basket having .a reinforced metallic band about its mouth, and angled metallic strips secured to and projecting out troni said band and adapted to detachably engage said lips on the plate.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
