Description

Letters Patent No. 99,828, dated February 15, 1870.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may conccrn:
Beit known that I, MARTIN Blue-Gs, of the city of Rochester, in the county of Monroe, and State of N ew York, have invented a certain llelv and useful Illlpl'ovcment in the Bolt-Tolk of Safes, faults, and Doors;
and I do llereby declare that the hllowillg is a full and exactdeseription of.the sanle, reference being hadV to the accompanying drawings.
Nature of the I ln'cntion.
My invention collsists in tying or locking the opposite jalllhs of a safe together by arnls extending froln janlb to jalnh, having hook joints to preventspread or expansion by gunpowder or wedges.
It also consists ill the arrangement of certain parts, as will be hereinafter described.
General Description.
In the drawingsl Figure 1 is all elevation of the door, with the boltwork attached. j
Figure 2, a section through the door and janlb.
'.lhe door A alld jalnb B are nlade up of the ordinary plating, alld arranged ill the usual manner.
Instead of the usual round bolts, attached to the door alld shooting into sockets ill the janltb, I enlploy the following arrangement:
Flat plates or bars, C C C C', are secured on the inside of the door, respectively upon the sides and ends, as shown. r1`hese bars are nlade to slide out alld il'l bodily by means of slots a a cut ill the sanle, which titover corresponding headed pills, l) b, of the door; or,
instead of this, any equivalent connection may be made.
hen the door is closed and the bars thrown ont, as ill black lilies, they shoot over the joillt between the door and janlb upon the inside, `and preferably illto a socket, and therefore effectively close it, tllus serving the double purpose of a lock (as usual) and a shield to the joillt all around, to prevent the entrance of gunpowder or tire. This arrangement I believe to be new.
Common bolts simply fasten into the jaulb at ditferent and `widely separated points. In my invention the bearing is all around. Common bolts give no protection to the joint, while my bars, by covering the joint, ett'ectually prevent all y passage through, either of tools, of gunpowder, or of iire when exposed in a. confia gration. They also give greater strength with corresponding lightness of construction, and being upon the face of the door, they are easily reached for repairs.
It' desired, a portion only of the four plates may be used; for instance, those on the sides; but I contemplate Aas the nlost effective plan the use of `all, as shown.
When the bars or plates are drawn back or retracted, as showll ill dotted lines, they nnclose the joint and allolv the door to swing. Y
The above-described arrangement may be operated by any dcsired mechanical means. That shown ill the drall'ings is a convelliellt and eiective one. Two sets `of forked arnls, D D D, (three in a set,) connect with conlnlon bearings, fj; one of which is operated by the knol-l or-handle outside. sets are connected by rods or bars E E on the sides which rest between the friction-rollers g g of the side hars C O, to lessen friction when thrown, iVllen the spindle is turned, of course the toggle action will throw the side bars or bolts ont to connect with the jatnh, as before described.
rlhe end bars C O' have vertical stems, h il', provided with gear-teeth, I, with which engage sinlilarteetll,m, of hubs or hearings ff, so that the saine action of the spindle whichsthro ws the side bars also throws the end ones.
The ends of the arms D, striking over the joint of thcjanlb, serve as all additional safeguard, with bars C l', ill preventing the forcible opening of the safe.
The ends of the al'nls are also provided with hoolt'sV i la Il', which engage with corresponding catches in the janlb, the object of which is to tie the opposite jambs together and prevent any lateral expansion or spread of the saule, either under the action of wedges or. gunpowde.
Claims.
Tying or locking the opposite jambs of a safe together by arms extending from janlb to jamb, having hook joints or equivalent, to prevent spread or expansion hy gullpowder or wedges, as herein described.
Also, the arrangement-as a whole, consisting of the bars or plates C O', arms D I), connecting rods E E,
. diction-rollers g g, and gears l in, the whole operating in the manne and for the purpose specied..
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my nanle in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
