To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. MOOERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horseshoes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to horse shoes and particularly to improvements in the calks.

The object of my invention is to provide a horse shoe having an improved construction and arrangement of calks, whereby said calks shall be self sharpening and shall prevent slipping of the animal either forwardly, readwardly or laterally, and whereby twisting or wrenching of the ankle is avoided.

A further object of my invention is to provide a horse shoe with an improved toe calk for the purposes above mentioned which shall also relieve the ankle of unnecessary strain when raising the weight upon the toe.

A further object of my invention is to provide an improved horse shoe characterized as above mentioned in which the calks will be so arranged as to prevent cutting if the animal interferes.

Further objects of my invention are to provide a shoe as mentioned which shall be strong and durable and which may be manufactured at low cost.

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

lVith these objects in view my invention consists generally in a horse shoe provided with toe and heel calks having a general inclination, forwardly or rearwardly, and in which the forward and rear faces converge downwardly and intersect at the lower ends and in which the undermost face is convexly curved, whereby as the calks wear a sharp edge is maintained.

My invention further consists in providing a horse shoe with a toe calk and a pair of heel calks characterized as above in which the toe calk and one of the heel calks incline rearwardly and the other heel calk inclines forwardly to avoid twisting or wrenching of the ankle and to prevent slipping either forwardly or rearwardly whether the weight is on all three calks or on the heel calks only.

My invention further consists in inclining the side faces of the calks outwardly and downwardly whereby in combination with the features of construction above set forth, slipping in any direction is prevented.

My invention further consists in the de tails of construction and arrangements of parts all as will be fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claims.

My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which Figure l is a bottom plan view of a horse shoe equipped with calks embodying my invention in its preferred form, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 2-2 of Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is a rear elevation.

Referring now to the drawings 1 indicates a horse shoe, 2 the toe calk and 3 and 4 the heel calks. The calks are made integral with the shoe by forging the same thereon or by welding them thereto as an integral calk is of greater strength and durability than those detachably connected to the shoe and the device may be manufactured at a much lower cost. Each calk has a general inclination either forwardly or rearwardly and the front and rear faces thereof converge downwardly and intersect at the lower ends forming sharp straight edges 6. Both faces incline in the same general direction and the longer face will hereinafter be termed the under face or tread 7.

5 indicates the shorter or more vertical face. The under face or tread 7 is conveXly curved from its root to the edge 6 and, as the calk wears, maintains a sharp edge 6, due in a large measure to the slight rocking motion permitted at the beginning and end of each step.

The toe calk 2 is arranged with a rearward inclination and is quite broad. By this construction a firm hold is established as soon as the foot is placed to the ground and great assistance is given in hauling, par ticularly up-hill. The forward under face 7 being curved as above described permits a slight forward rocking movement as the foot is raised and relieves the ankle of unnecessary strain when the weight is shifted to the toe.

The heel calks 3 and 4 are inclined in opposite directions, that is, the calk 3 is inclined forwardly and the calk 4 rearwardly. this construction it is impossible for the foot to twist. \Vhen a horse twists its feet the heel turns outwardly and 1 therefore make the shoes in pairs and have the outer heel calk turned forwardly and the inner calk rearwardly. By having the inner calk rearwardly inclined the danger of cutting if the animal interferes, is reduced to a minimum. in such cases the inner heel calk 4- is positioned inside of the outer edge of the she as indicated in Figs. 1 and i} of the drawing. '50 insure against lateral slipping all three of the calhs have their side faces inclined outwardly and downwardly. The forwardly inclined calk on the outer side of the heel is also of great assistance when backing.

Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

l. A horse shoe, in combination with a toe calla and a pair of heel callzs said heel ealks being inclined forwardly and rearwardly respectively and tapered downwardly terminating in a sharp lower edge extending transversely of the shoe, substantially as described.

2. A horse shoe, in combination with a toe call: and a pair of heel calks, the toe call: and one of the heel calks being rearwardly inclined and the other heel call; being forwardly inclined, the front and rear faces of said ealks having the general inclination. of the respective calk and converging dowmvardly intersecting at the lower end, and the longer under face or tread face being convexly curved substantially as described.
