Be it known that I, JOHN G. HoocsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Maywoo d. in'the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful improvement in Processes of Manufactun" ing Lacquered or Protective-Coated Cans,

' soldered end seams My invention relates to improvements in the alter process of manufacturing sheet metalv preserving cans of tin plate, having uniting the top and bottom heads to the body of the can, and which are provided with lacquer-or other protective coating onv the the food or other products t'roin direct contact with the tin plate and with the solder upon tl e inside of the can at the soldered end scams or joints thereof.
Heretot'ore sheet metal preserving cans having lacquer or protective coatings on the inside and made with soldered end seams have been made by spraying the lacquer or protective coating over the insidesurt'ace of the can after the can is made'up, and then subsequently baking or drying the lacquer or protective coating upon the inside of the cans by placing t-he'cans in an oven or heated retort, and subjecting them to a baking and drying'heat, usually about 300 degrees Fahrenheit for a period of eight or ten hours or such matter. This old method is slowjandexpensive in operation, and results in the production'of and unsatisfactory lacquered or protective coated cans, it is very ditlicult by a sprayin operation to coat the inside surface of t e can evenly and perfectly throughout, and with a coatin within the can to flow or collect at certain portions of the can, and also because it is very diiiicult to perfectly dry and'harden the coating upon the inside of a can where the coating happens to be a little toothick.

I claim v n 1. The process of manufacturing sheet metal preserving cans having lacquered or protective coatings on the inside thereof, and soldered side, end and cap seams consisting in first coating the sheets of tin plate in, the flat in can-body, can head and can cap areas or spots (excepting the portions thereof from which the head andcap flanges and body seam are formed) with a protective coating, then drying and baking the sheets, then cutting and forming the can bodies, can heads and can heads having cap openings therein and can caps therefrom,
then forming the body blanks into can bodies and soldering the side seams thereof, then applyin the can heads to the can bodies and so dering the end seams thereof and finally applying the caps to the can heads and soldering the cap seams thereof, said protective coating extending to the inner edge of said seams and preventing the solder from extending to the interior 'sur face of the can, substantially as specified.

The process .of making protective coated can heads with cap openings therein, and with uncoated soldering flanges consisting in applying to a sheet of tin plate in the hat, aprotective coating at annular areas thereof from which the can heads are to be cut, and leaving inner and outer flange portio'n areas uncoate'd adjacent to each annular coated portion, then drying the coating,
then cutting the can heads om' the sheet and forming the can'heads' with "cap openings therein and with inner and outer annular flanges, said inner and outerannular flanges being formed from the "uncoated annular portions adjacent to each annular coated portion of the sheet, said rotective coating extending to the inner e ge of the lapping portions of said inner and outer annular flanges and serving to prevent the solder from extending to the interior'surface of the can when the cap is soldered to the -can head, substantially as specified.
