Be it known that I, Josnrn L. BURLESON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Upper Alton, in the county of Madison and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVork-Holders for Grinders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in an arched rest for holding articles to be ground and comprises various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.

I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which z- Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the application of my invention to a grinding wheel. Fig. 2 is an edge view, and Figs. 3 and 1 are slight modifications of the holding apparatus.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter. A designates a bracket arm which is adapted to be held stationary and has adjustably mounted thereon an arm B, having a bail-shaped portion B forming a rest which is disposed at an inclination, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and is adapted to be positioned adjacent to the grinding wheel O. Said arm B may be held in difierent adjusted positions by means of the bolts' D which pass through apertures in the arm and also through slots 6 in the bracket arm, the marginal edges of which slots are shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawings. Rods E having hooked ends E engage over the horizontal portions of the arm B upon either side of the bail-shaped part and each hook is connected to an end of a spring F,

the other end of which spring is fastened to an eye H mounted upon the plate K upon which the work to be ground is held, said plate having a handle K. Mounted upon said plate are angled clamping members N which are held by means of screws N, having winged nuts N 2 upon the threaded portions thereof and said clamping members serve as means to hold the article to be ground.

In Fig. 3 of the drawings I have shown a slight modification of my invention in which, instead of the particular supporting means shown in Fig. l, I have illustrated a swinging supporting member M having hooks M at its upper end engaging over the arms of the rest B and said member M supports the work-holder Q, upon which is shown a wedge R to be ground and which may be held by clamps S in the block S. In the modified form shown it will be noted that the spring F is dispensed with and in Fig. 4 I have shown a still difierent modification of the holder adapted to hold such articles as masons hammers, etc.

In operation, the article to be ground is held by means of the clamps upon the plate K and pressure applied to the handle K to regulate the rapidity of the grinding intermediate the edge of the article being ground and the grinding stone. When pressure is relieved from said handle, the springs F will tend to raise the plate and draw the article away from the grinding surface.

What I claim to be new is 1. A device for holding articles while being ground, comprising a bail-shaped rest, a bracket arm upon which the same is mounted, rods having hooked ends journaled upon said rest, a plate secured to the rods, a

spring connecting said hooks with the plate, a handle fixed to the plate, and clamping members thereon.
