To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN BISTER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Mamaroneck, in the county of \Vestchester and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Umbrella Clot-h or Covering, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates to woven textile fabrics, and its object is to provide a new and improved umbrella cloth or covering, which is exceedingly serviceable, of high wearing quality, and arranged to properly shed rain water and give a fine appearance to the umbrella. For the purpose mentioned, the warp of the cloth or covering is wholly made of cotton yarns and the weft is formed of silk threads overlying the cotton yarns, the selvage having ribs running lengthwise of the cloth.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure l is a face view of the umbrella cloth or covering; Fig. 2 is a cross section of the same; Fig. 3 is a face view of the umbrella cloth in the piece and showing the lines for cutting the cloth into triangular pieces for forming the covering for the umbrella; and Fig. t is a side elevation of an umbrella provided with the improved covering.

The umbrella cloth or covering is woven in the piece on a suitable loom, and consists of a body A and a selvage B at each side, the body A being formed of a warp consisting of cotton yarns C and a weft of silk threads D, interwoven with and overlying the cotton yarns 0. Each selvage B is formed of cotton yarns E interwoven with the extensions D of the silk weft threads D, the said extensions D floatingly overlying sun dry of the selvage cotton warp yarns E, so

as to form longitudinally-extending ribs, as plainly indicated in Fig. 1, the ribs being preferably made alternately wide and nar-.

The umbrella cloth or covering, arranged in the manner described, is cut up in the usual manner in triangular pieces and sewed together along the side edges to form the umbrella covering, as plainly indicated in Figs. 3 and 4, the selvage B forming the lower edge of the covering.

An umbrella covering, made from the umbrella cloth described, is exceedingly serviceable and has high wearing quality, and arranged to properly shed the water, owing to the silk face formed by the silk weft threads D extendingoutwardly to the selvage, which later, by its longitudinal ribs gives a fine appearance to the umbrella.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

An umbrella covering, comprising triangular pieces of umbrella cloth having a smooth face body formed of a warp of cotton yarns and a weft of silk threads regularly interwoven with and overlying the cotton yarns, and a ribbed selvage formed of a selvage warp of cotton yarns and a weft formed of extensions of the said silk body weft threads, the said silk weft extension threads floatingly overlying a plurality of warp threads throughout the length of the selvage warp threads and the overlying silk selvage weft threads ranging one alongside the other to form ribs extending lengthwise of the fabric, adjacent ribs of the selvage being of different widths.
