Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 3, 1911.
Patented July 11, 1911.
erial No. 618,715.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KARL ALBERT, a sub ject of the German Emperor, residing at Wathlingen, near Celle, in Germany, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Tobacco-Boxes, of which the following is a specification. I
The object of this invention is to provide a box for carrying rope-tobacco, with a de vice for conveniently cutting and removing plugs of tobacco therefrom.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan-view of'the box, with lid removed, Fig. 2 an inside View of the lid, Fig. 3 a section on the line A A of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 a section on the line BB of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 a plan-view of the lid, illustrating the cutting of the tobacco.
In the drawing a represents the box, 6 a spiral wall therein, and 0 thepassage containing the rope-tobacco cl. The part c is a sharp-edged shoe or wedge adapted to engage under the outer end of the tobacco coil and lift the tobacco as shown in Fig. 4:. The lid 7 has a flange g engaging over the edge h of the box, on which the lid is rotatable. The aperture 2' in the lid is closable by the shutter is pivoted at Z inside the lid. The tail 0 of the shutter forms a kind of pawl engaging an annular rack p with ratchet teeth fixed in the box to prevent rotation of the shutter during rotation of the lid in the direction indicated by the arrow u in Fig. 1. On rotation of the lid in the direction indicated by the arrow 9, the abutment 8 rotates the shutter with the lid, and the abutment m fixed to the shutter pushes the shoe 6 along the spiral passage. The shoe in turn lifts the tobacco so that the end thereof protrudes through the aperture 2'. On rotation of the lid on the opposite direction the plug of tobacco is sheared off between the sharp edge 6 of the aperture and the knife-edge n of the shutter, the latter being prevented from yielding, by the rack 10.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A tobacco-box comprising a spiral receptacle for a coil of ropet-obacco, an apertured rotatable lid onsaid receptacle, a wedge-device movable in said spiral receptacle and adapted to engage under and lift one end of the tobacco rope, and an abutment carried by the lid for moving said wedge-device so that the wedge lifts the rope-end through the lid-aperture.
2. A tobacco-box comprising a spiral receptacle for a coil of rope-tobacco, an apertured rotatable lid on said receptacle, a wedge device movable in said spiral receptacle and adapted to engage under and lift one end of the tobacco rope, an abutment carried by the lid for moving said wedgedeviceso that the wedge lifts the rope-end through the lid-aperture, and means for shearing off the lifted ropeend by rotation of the lid.
3. A tobacco-box comprising a spiral receptacle for a coil of rope-tobacco, an apertured rotatable lid on said receptacle, a wedge-device movable in said spiral receptacle and adapted to engage under and lift one end of the tobacco rope, a sharp-edged slide pivoted inside the lid, means preventing rotation of the slide with the lid in one direction, an abutment whereby the lid rotates the slide with it in the other direction, and an abutment fixed to the slide for moving the Wedge-device so that the wedge lifts the rope-end through the lid-aperture, enabling the rope-end to be out off by coaction of the slide with an edge of the aperture when the lid is rotated without the slide.
In witness whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two Witnesses.
KARL ALBERT.
Witnesses: I
MARTA L. THOMPSON, JAMES M. BowoooK.
