WILLIAM R. GOURLEY, 0F GREENBRIER, WEST VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-FIFTH 'IO JOHN W. ROMINE, 0F IARKERSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA, ONE-FIFTH TO JAMES P. LOCKE AND ONE-FIFTH TO SAMUEL C. MILLER, OF G'REEN'BRIER, WEST VIRGINIA, AND ONE-FIFTH TO WILLIAM S. STEVENSON, OFBUTLER, PENNSYLVANIA.
CUTTER-BAR FOR HARVESTING-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 11, 1911.
Application filed June '17, 1910. Serial No. 567,471.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM It. GoURLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenbrier, in the county of Greenbrier, State of l/Vest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Outtar-Bars for Harvesting-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to cutter bars for harvesting machines.
The object of the invention resides in the construction of a cutter bar which embodies improved means for detachably securing the teeth to the body strip of the cutter bar.
A further objectof the invention resides in an improved construction for interlocking the teeth and the body strip together whereby the possibility of breakage of the teeth at the points of engagement with the body strip is reduced to a minimum.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts .as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views; and in which,
Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of a cutter bar constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2, a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and, Fig. 4:, a section on the line 4% of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 10 indicates the body of the device which has formed on its upper face transversely extending retaining lugs 11, the front ends of which are curved as at 12. The longitudinal and front edges of the retaining lugs 11 are concaved transversely as at 13, the deepest portion of said concave being beneath the longitudinal center of said side and end edges. Formed on the body strip 10, between each pair of retaining lugs 11 is a detent' 1 1 v for a purpose that will presently appear.
The teeth used in connection with the bar are all of the same size and shape and those portions of the teeth which are adapted to rest upon the body strip 10 are provided with recesses 15, corresponding in shape to the retaining lugs 11 and having their edges convexed so that when the teeth are slid transversely of the strip 10 the retaining lugs 11 will assume positions within the recesses 15 and will bind against the walls thereof and overlap them. As indicated in the drawings, two of the retaining lugs 11 are provided for each tooth. By constructing the front end of the retaining lugs 11 of circular formation and the front and side edges of said lugs transversely concaved the possibility of the cutter teeth being split during use at the point of engagement with the retaining lugs is reduced to a minimum; it having been found in practice that a square corner engagement between the retaining lugs and the cutter teeth and the constructing of the front ends of the retaining lugs square instead of round tend to split the teeth at the point of engagement petween same and the end of the retaining ugs.
The rear end of each tooth is provided with a pair of spaced slits 16 located between the recesses 15 and forming a spring latch 17. The under side of the latch 17 is recessed as at 18 so as to leave a protruding portion 19 adapted to overlie the rear end of the PIOjGCtlOIl'lt and thus secure the tooth to the body strip 10. Any of the teeth can be easily removed from the body strip bysimply lifting the free end of the curved front ends, the edges of the end and the sides of each of said lugs being concaved.
transversely, and said bar further having a portion of its upper face between the I members of each pair inclined toward its lower face from the rear to the front thereof, of teeth removably mounted upon the bar, each tooth having recesses corresponding to the lug for the reception of one pair of the latter, the walls of said recesses being conveXed transversely throughout so as to enter the concaved edges of the lug whereby the latter will lap and bind upon all of the walls of the recesses; and each of said teeth being further provided with longitudinally disposed slits between said recesses forming a spring tongue, said tongue having a cut-away portion in its lower face for receiving the inclined portion of the upper face of the bar when the tooth is mounted thereon, and the rear wall of said cut-away portion engaging the rear face of said bar when the tooth is looked upon the latter.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
